Hi all! I just wanted to take the time to introduce myself! I come from a background of sales, marketing, and account management. I stumbled across this website seeking online guidance for starting an independent agency. Does one have to have agency experience in order to make it in this business? All feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi everyone...I'm new here, but so far looks like lots of great information. Here is my question for the group: I've just hired my first employee and I was wondering a few things. First, what should I set as a minimum number of calls per day? As the legal industry is a bit different from others, in that we have all of the candidate information at our fingertips, so no research is necessary, what is a reasonable number of calls to expect for a new hire? Second, does anyone have advice on how to get her started on the right track? Is there a good book I could get for me or her to help with expectations, etc.? And any other advice would be greatly appreicated.

Many of my friends have been trapped in horrific weather this week. Anywhere across the states and even the globe, there has been tragic incidences of weather that have taken lives or shut down commerce, which negatively impacts many, many lives. One person with whom I was supposed to demo my company's product lost power for a day or so due to ice. An ice storm.

Many pictures of severe winter conditions emerged this week. None more impactful than this one that was floated around our office:

It is hard to concentrate when outside a storm is waging. It is hard to communicate when numerous channels of communication are jammed or knocked out of service. It is hard to fulfill daily duties when distractions abound. And distractions do not have to be limited to weather.

There may be family crisis, big or small. My daughter called me last week to state that the bottom of the cupboard under our kitchen sink had caved in, a drip had been constant and we had not realized it until too late. I couldn't concentrate the rest of the day - I was done. My mother had surgery not too long ago and my thoughts were chronically with her, hoping and wishing for the best - it was received, thank goodness. An email came in from our water provider, Arrowhead, stating they were changing our delivery service and number of water containers to be delivered. It took me out for the count because I had to go count - making sure the water needs of my office would be met with the projected changes.

Falling off of the curb where you are perched is easy, if you let it be so. Focus is difficult to maintain when our lives and minds are pulled in so many different directions. And as the shift in the economy continues, this condition will continue and maybe even worsen--> the lack of focus, multiple distractions. I used to say I could multi-task and while it is true, it is also true that divided attention can prove to be damaging as division is a break, a split of ideas or lack of cohesion. Care is difficult to keep when you aren't sure where to look, or for whom or what to care.

There is no need to panic or make drastic changes, but there is a need to remember a really key idea: United we stand, divided we fall. I like to use this in reference to self and the focus I direct toward each project. United and singular thoughts, I stand, I succeed. Divided or scattered thoughts I fall, I fail. I don't know about you, but now - at this very ripe time - is not a time to fail or become disoriented or out of focus. My client/partner/hiring manager/candidate needs to see that I am better than my competition. I need to be better than my competition. Focused I stand.

by rayannethorn

I have heard that video is the new blogging. Vlogging, as it were. And I tend to agree that video is making a comeback, especially given Apple's revelation yesterday. The announcement that takes us beyond the 2-way radio wrist watch from Dick Tracy, obviously more than a mere fantasy from the mind of cartoonist Chester Gould. How could Gould have known way back in 1931, when Dick Tracy debuted, that a true possibility existed that technology would actually surpass a small wireless device that allows for mobile communication?

With the onset of Skype and all things web cam, how could we doubt that it was so close? As close as June 24th - the release date of the iPhone 4. We knew it was coming, but the very fiction that has been so attached to the idea since the gangster 30s kept us, well, me anyway, from hoping - from believing. How utterly delightful to be alive in an era where fantasy becomes real. Where life actually imitates art, instead of the other way around.

And what a fine art it was. It was actually later in 1946 when the two-way wrist radio was first introduced - truly a preview of the cell phone. Ten years ago, I didn't even own a cell phone. That was by design, I didn't want to be reached. When I was at work, I wanted to be at work. When I was shopping, I wanted to be shopping. When I was camping or on vacation, I wanted to be on vacation. Unreachable - recharging. My how times have changed.

I have been known to sleep and wake to my mobile device. I network, take pictures and video, listen to music, read books, cruise the internet, email, blog, tweet, and text via my mobile. I am rarely seen without it. As a matter of fact, I often feel like I am going through withdrawals when I am driving. The times that I actually leave it home are rare but my children definitely enjoy it. Breakfast on Sunday mornings, the movies, and interviews are the only times my phone it not in front of me or in my hand or tucked inside my planner.

On the day that LinkedIn announced an expanded functionality for Blackberry, Steve Jobs took to the stage and delivered another knockout punch. And it's ok - it's ok because this is what drives innovation, this is what keeps 'em on their toes, this is what keep consumers consuming, developers developing and producers producing.

My two teenagers were showing me some videos on YouTube and both, in their infinite wisdom, said, "I hate the changes they have made to YouTube." and "Why can't they just leave it alone?" I guess I have come to a point in my understanding and experience that I barely notice when a change is made to a new media site. YouTube is part of my every day, just as Twitter, facebook, LinkedIn, and RecruitingBlogs are. If I complained or worried at all about the changes made to these sites, I would have a severe case of heartburn and brewing a significant ulcer by now.

Changes are necessary. Every day we watch Apple/Mac come out with a new product soon to be copied or bested by Microsoft or Google. At least, a serious attempt to best is made. No one tech company can afford to rest on its laurels, for the minute they do, they will be looking at the hind end and choking on the dust of their nearest competitor. It is just the way of new tech development and early adoption. Basically, you snooze, you lose.

There are those of us in the recruiting community that have long embraced what technology can do for our business, be it the fax machine fifteen+ years ago, email ten+ years ago, or social media five+ years ago. And now we face the impact of what real time search will mean. While it is very exciting and I am eager to learn more and participate, my enthusiasm is often hampered by the skeptics that roam among us, those that poo-poo the reality that lies before us, those that belittle the infuence twitter has already had and the intrigue of what lies next for facebook when linked with businesses.

I find it interesting that the powerhouses of new media: Google, LinkedIn, facebook, as well as plaxo and myspace have allied, so to speak, with Twitter. What does it all mean? Where will we be next year at this time or even six months from now? Changes take place daily. Life moves pretty fast. (Bueller)

I started a recruitment for a Client Services Manager two days ago. I intend to use new media throughout the course of finding the right placement; job boarding as well as double checking resumes and online profiles. I will also use new media to check out the hotel I will be staying at in Minneapolis next week, as well as a theater I will be going to next month. How we do business, how we conduct our lives is changing as quickly as the format of facebook.
Get on board because history is being made daily.

@ by rayannethorn

Contact: Christopher Poreda FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(P): 1.908.517.0800
(E): Christopher@ujbcorp.com

ULTIMATEJOBBOARD.COM GOES ONLINE TO REDEFINE AN INDUSTRY
New York, NY, Jan. 20, 2010 – Three years ago Christopher Poreda, then owner of a successful executive search firm, was fielding calls from several well known job boards, each touting unique service offerings. “After sitting through well-meaning product demonstrations I realized that most job boards were cluttered and indistinguishable from their peers,” says Christopher, Chief Architect and Founder of ultimatejobboard.com. “I’ve used job boards for years to complement my recruiting efforts. I was surprised how little has changed in the most important aspects of a job board: search, relevance, research, and user experience, especially given advances in technology.” Christopher also wondered about their evolution. “Each Website’s evolving identity would confuse any user; the focus on the job search was lost among features for resume writing, career services, community chat rooms, social networks, blogs, survey outlets, and advertising portals. Somewhere along the way the beauty of simplicity was lost.”

Ultimatejobboard.com was created to be intuitive, relevant and to provide a superior user experience. The site combines a clean interface and state-of-the-art technology with research tools and industry defining search and filtering capabilities. Christopher insists that, “Although easy to use, the technology is complex and cutting edge. Our team worked diligently to develop and fine-tune the site to ensure the best possible user experience.” Here’s the kicker. They don’t charge a dime for the service. As for making the site available for free, “Our mission is to create a platform where all job-seekers, and those who wish to engage them, have access to each other, regardless of budgets and other familiar constraints. Now, I recognize the concept of free is not a new one, but free should not come at the expense of quality to the user.” Christopher concludes, “Predicting the demise of the job board has almost become a sport. Without question, job boards, used as a tool in a well balanced recruiting program are not going away any time soon. We think we’ve succeeded in creating something special and we are eager to share it with the world.”

Ultimatejobboard.com is currently running in beta. The soft launch is in the NYC Metro area. To currently experience the site’s features simply enter Accounting / New York, NY as a sample search in the search query. UJB invites all recruiters and employers to register and post open positions for free. They have ambitious plans to continue to release new and exciting features that will ensure a fresh and relevant user experience and they plan on expanding their market beyond NYC.

For more information log onto: www.ultimatejobboard.com
Contact: Christopher Poreda
(t) 1.908.517.0800 ###
It is a very exciting time to be involved with technology and new media. Twitter continues to take the internet world by storm as it gleans your latest updates and information from the major social media players. Are you connected? And mashable tweeted some very exciting news yesterday, "Google search goes Real Time!" Can anyone really afford to not know about Twitter anymore? It surprises me that there are those that still resist.

Technologizer.com (Harry McCracken) shared that MySpace and Facebook have partnered with the big G to provide user updates to Google's real-time feed. What will this mean to search as we know it? The game is changing, faster than most will be able to keep up. Auto update: the speed of information transfer just increased. And you thought it couldn't get any faster?

Every day, one site or another announces innovative breakthroughs, new functionalities, faster downloads, sharper images and it feels the speed of light just got slower. I contend again: there are no social/new media experts. How could there possibly be? There are only those that are flexible enough to be ok with trying to keep up or those that actually get it every now and then and do a video or write a blog. Just when you master one, version two launches. Just when you think you have Web 2.0 all figured out, be prepared to actually step into your monitor to Tron.

I like the changes. I like hearing about them through Twitter or my Facebook news feed. I enjoy knowing that we have to keep learning. I also am thankful that we cannot possibly keep up with this speed. Adaptation takes longer, most brains just need a bit more time. The phone. Lest we forget, the phone still functions pretty close to the same way it did last week. For now. While your brain is playing catch up, pick up the phone, call the warm leads you sourced from Facebook or Twitter or LinkedIn or Plaxo. The game is changing, but the song remains the same... people like doing business with people they know.
