Let me pick your brilliant brains for a second... I have been recruiting for almost 4 years now. Currently, I am recruiting for a global promotions company and I need to hire in all 50 states rather quickly.

Now, the position I am hiring for primarily pays 100% commission (we pay them minimum wage if they have a bad week). There is high income potential - some of the reps that promote for us make upwards of 6 figures. Which is great however, this turns off the majority of job seekers. Even if a candidate expresses interest, about 50% of them fall off before they begin training...

I've just been hitting the phones and talking to as many people as possible. But there's gotta be an easier way!! Has anyone recruited for this type of work before? Any advice??

Thank you!! :)

These kind of jobs if advertised often get overlooked on the job boards and often times gets flagged off Craigslist even though it is a real opportunity. The recruiting team has the traditional recruiting resources at their disposal.

What do you think would be the best way to get the word out to talk with potential job seekers about this kind of opportunity?

So if they would use other resources like an outside recruiting firm, or social media outlets how would they recruit using these methods or what could they expect? What would work? What would not and where are the surprises?

FOR THOSE NOT FAMILAR WITH REAL ESTATE AGENTS:

Agents are paid on a 100% commission basis. They split their commission typically four (4) ways depending on their experience level and company offerings. Agent's pay desk fees, their own expenses, cultivate their leads, they are their own boss, have flexible hours, and unlimited income potential.

Let's say for the sake of argument that an agent will earn $30,000 their first year so you can estimate your pay out for finding and placing an agent. Could you recruit to this industry? Would you? How would you attract talent to be able to discuss the opportunity with them? Would you advertise on job boards and in print publications or would you also use social media to help you? If so, what venues and how?

Animal, the host of the show, is boastful, blustering, and brilliant. I enjoy the show for many reasons. Much like RecruitingBlogs.com, it is a gathering place where individuals that work in this crazy industry can throw down gauntlets, hash out rationales and exchange ideas about the recruiting industry, business and even life, in general.

On a recent show, Animal's guest, Rebecca Sargeant, created quite a stir with her methods and shared some interesting observations. Rebecca recruits recruiters and she has specific criteria that she adheres to when she is recruiting. One of her observations is that the best recruiters, that she has come across, held their first jobs when they were fifteen or younger. It was quite interesting to hear the response to this comment. Several listeners concurred and realized that they, indeed, had started working prior to turning sixteen years old.

I, myself, had several jobs prior to my sixteenth birthday. I took in ironing regularly by the time I was twelve and cleaned a house every weekend when I was 14. By the time I was sixteen, I'd had several jobs. Which might be explained by my ADD (another point she made about recruiters.) No, I have never been diagnosed, but let's just say that I have trouble only doing one thing at a time. I consistently feel there is not enough time in the day to get everything done that I think needs to get done.

I posed the "what age did you start working?" question to several recruiters and every single one of them had held a job when they were fifteen or younger. The man I am happy to call my boss was actually working full-time by the time he was sixteen and by eighteen was running his own business. The psychology of a recruiter is a very interesting thing and while there may be generalized similarities among them, it might be a dangerous practice - a bit Gattaca - to assume that certain traits or specific practices prove a recruiter capacity and ability to perform.

To be a recruiter is more than having a dad who was a salesman, though I did. So far, Rebecca has been right on. To be a recruiter is more than want to change people's lives (I will try not to gag.) The ability to quickly shift gears, to be strategic, to be able to read voices and faces, to scan a resume in seconds and see what needs to be seen, to coerce, cajole, convince, connive, and coax candidates and hiring managers, alike, to hear what is being <s>sold</s> said, to follow up and follow through, to negotiate and ingratiate, and to dig deeper while never leaving a mess...

A recruiter is in sales, a recruiter does have divided focus, and a recruiter understands the value of hard work. Chances are you have nodded your head once or twice. Me too. And while I don't get to recruit nearly as often as I used to or would like, I am glad to be here. This profession chose me, I fell into it, it wrapped its arms around me tightly and said, "Welcome home."

I thought that it would be a magical age when all of sudden, a boy would call and my Friday nights would be filled. To prepare me for dating, my parents said that once I turned fourteen I would be allowed to go to the church dances that were held monthly by our home. A live band played and all of my friends would be there, it was a time of fear but also wonderment. I had no idea what it would be like, but I had dreams of what I hoped for.

I remember standing around the dance floor in a new sun dress my mother had made. My clenched hands held the fabric of my dress in hopes that sweaty palms would be dried. And I stood there all night; not one boy asked me to dance. I was crushed but I kept my façade up and never cracked. My brother picked me up afterward and I feigned delight with my first dance experience. Sleep came quickly for I was emotionally spent and wanted to forget.

The next morning, my father caught me sitting on the picnic table on the side of the house. I had been crying, face in my hands. Sensing my seemingly utter despair, he walked toward me, reaching his hands toward mine that were now resting on my knees. He patted my hands with his and asked what was wrong. I weakly said, "Nothing." I was a woman-in-training, so I had that line down. He lifted my chin, looked into my eyes and asked what was wrong once more. I blurted out that I was never going to a dance again, that no one had asked me to dance, and that I thought dances were stupid. Through tears, I told how my heart hurt and how ugly I felt.

With shining eyes, my father put his hands on my cheeks and told me that I would always be the most beautiful girl in the world to him. Every sad thought left me immediately. Immediately. I knew my dad loved me and that someday, a boy would love me, too. My heart stopped hurting and he soon had me laughing with one of his silly songs and lured me into a game of H-O-R-S-E. My dad knew the right thing to say. Umm...,and it isn't always easy to know the right thing to say to a fourteen year old, trust me.

I have remembered that moment often when life has had its way with me or during times when I miss him; he died just two months after 9/11. Not the best year for me, but I am thankful for the resilience and love he taught me. I can honestly say that I never heard him say a bad thing about anyone. He had been a salesman his whole life and he was proud of his profession; probably why I bought his line, hook, line, and sinker. He could sell. Thanks Dad.

Happy Father's Day month to all the Dads!
I enjoy living on the fly and being able to get up and go, as needed. The next conference I will be attending is in Wisconsin and then I will be in Washington, DC in May. The opportunity to get face-to-face, stepping off the virtual front porch and shaking hands is the best. Putting a face to the voice and email signature has sealed more than one deal.

My father was a salesman. My earliest memory of understanding his career was when he brought home a flexi 45-record that had a Culligan commercial on one side and a jingle on the other. Yep, he was a Culligan man, selling high-end water softeners. He also installed and did monthly maintenance on his accounts. One of his accounts was Jack Lemmon's house and he often spoke of what a nice man Mr. Lemmon was. He was good at his job and stayed with sales his whole life, moving from water softeners to electronic scales to stock to aloe vera to paintings to anything....

He believed in a firm handshake and taught me how to shake... "Don't shake hands like you are a fish - firm grip - and look them square in the eye..." He went to conferences, conducted conferences and sales meetings and understood the power of face-to-face. I have often thought about how he might have handled social media... He passed away shortly after 9-11, a couple years before the social evolution rocked the business world. I don't think I ever even received an email from him, but I think he would have embraced it all...

The power of a handshake, the strength that resides in looking someone square in the eyes, the gift of listening with purpose, the connections that open discussions and close sales, the knowledge gained from taking in relevant sessions and applicable tracks. The time between sessions, the walks through the exhibit hall, the exchanged nods that confirm acknowledgement though entrenched in other conversations. All are conference bonuses.

Here's the thing: nothing has brought me more friendship, knowledge, or business than regularly attending conferences. Decide why you should go and then fulfill the reason. It may not be for you, but if you never attend, how will you ever know?

Conference season is open; happy hunting to all.
