Thanks Stuart, I think this kind of crap really irritates good recruiters. Then the phonies turn around and blog about how wonderful they are..see just check out all my recommendations on LinkedIn. Only one of the reasons that LinkedIn recs don't mean much to anyone.
I caught one in Denver putting up bogus profiles. The profile looked just a little too good to be true so I sent an in mail giving the person the name of a client in Denver. It was not 20 minutes until a recruiter called my client trying to get a job order. Client was in on it so gave him a bogus job listing. Let him bust his butt for about two weeks digging up candidates for a wonderful job, then told him that the job was on the same status as the profile of "John Doe" on LinkedIn. The guy sort of choked and asked him what he meant. My client told him to figure it out. Never heard from the recruiter again but got a couple of calls from candidates a few weeks later saying they had not been able to reach the recruiter. They were told that the recruiter had gotten incorrect information by using a bogus linkedin profile and had been dropped.

No it wasn't fair to candidates but they sure learned what kind of recruiter they were working with. Go ahead and try phony it might come back around and bite you. Some nasty old recruiters know how to break an egg sucking dog by hanging a dead chicken around their neck.
As to NYC you are correct. I have been told that my life expectancy in the city would be about 15 minutes, I smile and say hello to people i don't know. I have worked on some positions that were based there and finally figured out that the best kind of call was to dial the number and ask the receptionist if i could speak that that asshole who was over the North east sales territory. When one put my through i almost fainted. I thought it was so bizzare that after he deigned to speak with me for a minute or two because of my Texas accent, i told him what i had done. He thought it was hilarious. We got to be pretty good pals over the next few months. He would call and leave me this message, "This is the asshole over the NE territory, call me i may have somebody for you."
@ Sandra- Where, in my senten…tag:recruitingblogs.com,2011-12-16:502551:Comment:14836832011-12-16T20:34:53.864ZBill Schultzhttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/BillSchultz

@ Sandra- Where, in my sentence, did it look like I was covering it up? As for just asking- you've obviously never worked in NYC.

@Bill a ruse by any other name is still a ruse. A lot of people seem to have to do that. I just ask saves the price of flowers.

@ Dr. R. That just pretty well says it all. Thank you for that. They do seem to have a lot ofr fancy titles to go along with the inflated all the other hype. :)

I went to a Peter Lefkowitz seminar once and he started ti tell a story about a company that used a ruse to get admin asst's names. I thought it was rather amusing until I realized he was talking about my company.

It involved calling companies and saying you were a new florist in the city and wanted to send a bouquet to all the admins as an intro. Worked like a charm. We don't do that anymore. Well, I don't work there anymore.

@christopher thank you for your comment. When I first started ,the firm I worked for suggested we use "desk Names". At the time I didn't understand that albeit I figured it out pretty quickly when I learned some of the things they wanted us to do. The first few days I was there my boss smiled and instructed me that this business was a series of "little white lies". She gave me a strange look when my response was, "Why?"
I never used a desk name because my focus like yours was to build my own reputation and be well received. It worked for me. When my boss asked me how I was doing what I was doing without ruse calls and her sales spiel, my comment was, "I'd rather somebody be mad at me or say no because I told the truth than be mad at me because I lied to them". I plan to live here for a long time.
I have certainly made some folks mad but I have the rep for calling a spade an efn'n shovel.
I wonder how any of us would feel about it if we found out our doctor, lawyer, accountant or the person we were dating or married to had 26 bogus profiles on the net to generate business. I don't know about the rest of you folks but I' find another, doc, lawyer, account and look for a new date. @Helen glad you got a smile.…tag:recruitingblogs.com,2011-12-16:502551:Comment:14836632011-12-16T16:45:17.474ZSandra McCartthttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/SandraMcCartt
@Helen glad you got a smile. Listen to yesterday's animal show and read the blog "Email is Dead" and make your own decision. That is all any of us can do. In my book if anyone announces they use phony profiles anything else they do is of no interest. He indicated on twitter that it was ok because he used his previous company name and said he was a recruiter. How's that for it's ok because I don't work for that company either. I can't get my head around that one.

@dr. R. Corrupt has a lot of names to make corruption politically correct and/or justify corruption in the name of successfully making money..very good observation. You are very correct, as P.T. Barnum said, "there is a sucker born every minute". We tell our kids to not take everything they see on the news or read on the net as fact. We have to monitor what they do and who they interact with on the net because that person may not be who they purport to be.
I guess now when we advise job seekers to put their profile on LI and FB we will need to caution them to be suspect of recruiter profiles as there are recruiters who put up phony profiles. Or do we just ignore that, take the attitude that we don't want to bad mouth anyone in our industry.

I didn't sign up to be the ethics police. I am not under the delusion that beating the drum will have any affect on the perps of sleazy practices in our industry but when one publically announces that he has bogus profiles and thinks it's funny that he forgot he really has 27 if he includes the real one, be advised, it is my personal opinionn that "he sucks buttermilk"
