Question of the day: What is the worst thing a candidate showed up to an interview wearing? - RecruitingBlogs2024-03-29T08:38:41Zhttps://recruitingblogs.com/forum/topics/question-of-the-day-what-is-the-worst-thing-a-candidate-showed-up?commentId=502551%3AComment%3A1511052&feed=yes&xn_auth=noMy best was a candidate who f…tag:recruitingblogs.com,2012-05-07:502551:Comment:15558682012-05-07T07:05:57.327ZCatherine Nelsonhttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/CatherineNelson

My best was a candidate who flew into to town to meet a client and broke the zipper in his pants in his hotel room. I have to say when the hiring manager asked me if I knew he showed up for the interview with his pants safety pinned shut was never what I expected as feedback.

Two actually come to mind:

1) where I had told the individual the attire would be "country club casual" - she came into the meeting with a Gap Sweatshirt, Super Tight Jeans, and Sneakers!

2) I was interviewing a candidate to become one of our Hardware techs at IBM. He had a really nice suit on...with the tags still in! He changed clothes in the bathroom before he left...I would lay money down that he returned the suit after the interview!

Not exactly an interview situation, but when I worked in the university career services setting, the student who attended the engineering career fair in plaid pajama bottoms, fluffy "doggy" bedroom slippers, a hoody sweatshirt (hood up) and a flourescent green down vest. Interviews were being scheduled for later that day at the employer booths. needless to say, this student didn't get anywhere near the employer booths or the interview rooms.

I had a candidate once that showed up for an executive interview in a stained grey tee shirt, scruffy beard and knee knocker tan shorts. The kicker was his florescent yellow flipflops. When I asked him why later he told me that he wanted to stand out from everyone else. The funniest thing was that he nailed the interview. My client loved him. The Hiring Manager thought he would be a lot of fun at the office and would bring new life to a "stale" environment. Personally, I could have…

The hiring manager was taken aback...called me and asked if I knew her condition. I asked, "What condition?" He said, "I'm guessing she's about seven months pregnant." I paused, "Wow. It never came up and it's certainly a question I could not and would not ask."

He laughed and said, "She's great. She apologized for her condition and explained why she did not tell you. I like her and extended her an offer and she's accepted. I will authorize maternity leave and need you to put that statement in the offer letter. Thanks, she'll be a great addition to the team."

It wasn't what they showed up at the interview wearing..it was what they WERE NOT wearing that was the issue. I had a candidate show up for VP level position within Banking/Global Markets in Downtown Boston barefoot. No shoes..no socks. He told the Hiring Manager he "lost them" on the way to the interview.

I also had someone take their teeth(dentures) out of their mouth in the middle of the interview...

That is why I love recruiting!!
