I think that one of the unstated consequences of unforgiveness is RESENTMENT (ala your exchange with Animal). What I do know about resentments are that they will eat you from the inside out. The degree to which we each extend forgiveness to others is the degree to which we can expect to attain and maintain any semblance of happiness in our own life. Good post Rayanne.

This is very personal and timely for me as well. I had breakfast with my grown daughter yesterday. She is angry with me about a choice that I made and so she chooses to blame me for anything that goes wrong in her life – a loophole that allows her to not take responsibility for her own choices. “If you hadn’t of then I wouldn’t…” Forgiveness releases the one that carries the grudge. Pain is a great teacher.
Detachment at work does not mean you can’t be passionate about what we do – but it doesn’t allow setbacks to dominate our day, month or year. What we think is right, what we want, is not always in the best interest of everyone in the bigger picture. Thanks for sharing. Your story really touched my heart too. I lost my father in 1998 to cancer. The hardest thing I ever did was forgive him for the hurt that he caused our family. I live by my favorite quotation, "To err is human, to forgive divine." Alexander Pope

Forgiveness is the hardest thing to do when someone hurts you deeply; however, unforgiveness robs a person of their life and vitality. Thank you for sharing your story!!

WOW..that's all I have. No, seriously, very well written, I relate on the death or loss side. Lost my Dad three years ( my best friend, fishing buddy, mentor) You get the picture. Was in a secure corporate 33 1/3 job and jumped over to staffing in the Spring of 08 ( note- not a good time to change jobs in a shakey economy). But had to do it. Why, life is short and you should not have regrets and unable to move on one needs to forgive!!!
You don't have to say it to describe it. Your family took care of your father after he did something they didn't like. I think that's nice. OK?

> Forgiveness is... letting go of the splinter that has been digging into you

"Dig out the splinter". All metaphor. Thats' my point. What you're doing is saying and presumably recognizing that: hey there's other things more important that being mad at this guy.

There's an old West Texas saying, "Gettin all twisted up about shit that happens to you, is kinda like the bull who was fed an onion, it won't kill him but ya better hope ta Gawd that he forgets it if ya ever have to mess with him again". Some folks and bulls just aint interested in forgiveness. So get over it, in the whole big scheme of things not much really makes a big difference and the sun will come up tomorrow. Maybe the bull liked the oinion then there ain't no problem.

There's an Irish saying, "Hurt is a useless emotion. The only one it hurts it you." And this comes from a nice Jewish boy from the Bronx.

I didn't say that getting over stuff does not apply to me. It applies to everyone.

However, I don't think forgiveness is necessarily the best way to think about it - because it's not a well-defined term.

Why would I be nice to someone who hurt me or simply did something I don't like?

Even business terms like solution focus vs problem focus are more clear.

Also, forgiveness carries with it the flavour of an imposed moral obligation. And I don't think there is one. Wow Rayanne:
