So much to look forward to in 2010, don’t you think? We face changes like we have never seen across all industries and those changes are coming at lightning speed. It can be a bit daunting but also very exciting. Being a recruiter by nature, I am always very interested in what’s new and what’s hot but also what will work. Which gimmicks will be around for a while and which will last to cause a stir in how we think about that particular tool or even how business is done.

I recently enjoyed a lively conversation with William Tincup; I was lamenting the fact that there really is no good way to learn about the new school of marketing. The last marketing class I took in early 2009 devoted a mere half hour on eMarketing, really. New media and new technology have driven us to the edge and we all seem to be here tottering over it, wondering how to proceed. I usually feel like I have just strapped on a parachute; ready to take a dive. I am not afraid, just cautious…, sometimes the wind takes you to a different landing pad than originally intended. Check out JPIE.com to read what some in our industry believe awaits us in 2010. Exciting stuff.

Full-cycle recruiting had me by the collar early on. I loved managing my own desk, marketing the firm all while sourcing candidates, arranging interviews and negotiating salaries. It didn’t take long for me to realize the whole process was like a perfectly organized symphony or even akin to arranging a lovely Thanksgiving dinner so that all the dishes were completed, still hot, and ready-to-eat at the same time – ten plates spinning, you know?

As we face 2010, we also face unfamiliar territory. Rapidly changing times. Do you feel pressured to keep up or have you set your mind to continue business as usual because that’s what works? Mary Poppins said that she would stay until the wind changes; classic inflexibility. The wind is constantly changing right now. Being flexible and ready to tackle what is out there is a desirable characteristic.

As you ponder a New Year's resolution or how you will brace yourself for what is to come, keep in mind that if you aren’t standing on the edge, you’re probably taking up too much space. I am not sure who tweeted this last week but it has stuck in my craw and if it was you, please step forward and claim it: “Even how we change is changing.” Time management will become more imperative than ever as we face the time suck that is the internet and its many offerings. Hmmm, time management…, isn’t that how I started here?

Interesting thoughts Rayanne. My goals, resolutions, plans etc....are all centered on strength and being in a greater position of strength. It's been a wild ride the last couple of years and those doing well enough in this business are there because of the strength of their business. Like many others, I'm sure, I wish I was in a position of greater strength coming into this. Going forward there is a ton of uncertainty and whether it is good or bad, I want to be in a stronger position. Cutting edge tools and strategies? I want to test the waters carefully and quickly to see if they will add strength or waste time and effort. I lean towards more of what I know works with an open eye and an open mind to minor additions of new things.
