Some of the very best professional Recruiters I know have not been able to maximize opportunities which their skills suggest they should have. In other words, they are good at recruiting but, they are starving. And they are starving not because they are bad people but because they keep doing the same things the same way - - - going from job req to candidate to job req to candidate, ad infinitum.

This phenomenon is very much like the proverbial "starving artist" syndrome in the arts world. The requisite skills are there in abundance but, "financial abundance" hasn't shown up in their lives. They know everybody in the business, they know how to write keyword-rich job descriptions, they know the most current Applicant Tracking Systems, the best set of Boolean search strings, site flipping/X-raying techniques, interviewing techniques, all the requisite employment laws, the hottest job boards, they know how to find every "Who's Who" list and ever user group list ever created - and - they've gotten every available certification but - yet - they don't earn enough to take care of themselves and their families.

As skills go, "recruiting skills", those skills which make a Recruiter a real professional, are an invaluable set of transferable business skills to have.

Real recruiting skills have nothing to do with tricks, sleaziness, gimmicks, cheating, stealing, lying, etc.

Professional recruiting skills don't shame our profession and can stand up equal to the professional skills of any other contemporary profession.

Professional Recruiters are GREAT communicators. That's an invaluable - and a transferable - skill.

Professional Recruiters are GREAT networkers. That's another invaluable - and transferable - skill.

Professional Recruiters are GREAT interviewers. Yet another invaluable - and transferable - skill.

Professional Recruiters are GREAT quasi-technology-geeks. Still another invaluable - and transferable - skill.

Professional Recruiters have GREAT creativity. Another invaluable - and transferable - skill

There are many other soft skills which Professional Recruiters are great at demonstrating.

But, what is not great is for Professional Recruiters to starve, to lose their homes, to lose their cars, to lose their businesses, to lose their families because someone "moved their cheese" - life changed, business changed, contracts changed, managers changed, people cheated, paychecks didn't arrive.

If, in your role as a Professional Recruiter, you are not making enough money to sustain you and your family, "transfer" your transferable skills to richer venues.

While the same things which affect Professional Recruiters affect other professions, I know the recruiting industry best so, I've decided to start here by advocating a mindset for "The Entrepreneurial Recruiter" - that group of Professional Recruiters who don't wait for opportunities but, who with an entrepreneur's mind, seek them out, create them, "RECRUIT" them...
