Remember this look-and-feel of Google search above?

As Google search engine progresses and offers new features and some new syntax, the older search dialogs are not easily accessed anymore. If you discover such a search screen you'll see older "look and feel" and even "©2011 Google" at the bottom of the page. However, these search dialogs are still around, work beautifully, and, in some cases, provide extra search facets that are gone from the "official", supported searches with the new look-and-feel.

  1. Advanced Patent Search
  2. Advanced Scholar Search,
  3. ~ which also points to the Legal Opinions Search
  4. Advanced Book Search
  5. Advanced Product Search
  6. Advanced Video Search (different from the new Video Search) - Also, some advanced searches have been recently upgraded, but are not easily found from the home page:
  7. Advanced News Search (available at the bottom of the news search)
  8. Advanced Image Search (available under the settings icon if you do an Image Search)

John (Sadler),

Thanks for your comment. We all know some sides of recruiting business and need to learn more on other sides. I'd say it's great to know what you know and what you do not know.

To learn about the operators I suggest going to the advanced search on Google; explore the search dialog, put in your request and press enter. You will see how Google contracts the search using operators. You can keep modifying your request and looking at the advanced syntax Google produces.
Also, Google help has a lot of good information.

Many thanks Ken. The Google Guide Teens page gives me a really good start in understanding the remarkable power available to us.

Joseph,
No apologies necessary. We've all been there. I've been in the business over 25 years and just discovered Google Hacks a couple of years ago.
Recommendation: Check out Google Hacks (I think there's a version 3 now) and see what you think. It has a lot of good information, though at times it's more technical than many of us can benefit from.

Another good source is Shally Steckerl's website www.jobmachine.net. He has a number of cheat sheets that are helpful. Most used to be free, but I've noticed that he's selling many now (not terribly expensive, on the order of $10 or so) and there may still be some free ones around.

Another great source is the Google Guide by Nancy Blachman http://www.googleguide.com/

Finally, for a little self promotion, go to www.itjob4u.com/erbauer and try out the Search Tools there.

Good luck and happy "netcasting".

Google Hacks--101--For Dummies

I know it may seem odd that someone with over 9 years of recruiting experience is just learning about "Google Hacks," but I humbly admit this is the case with me.

First I need to know, "how" can this benefit me finding candidates for my clients, ans secondly, can someone direct me to a thread that can get me started?? Baby steps please....and thank you to any and all that can help!
