Comment on: Topic 'I Did Not Accept Your Invitation because you are a Recruiter': candidates that if i see them in public i will not speak to them first as many people know what i do and they might be in the company of someone who works with them who is aware of that fact and might ask how they know me. If they speak first i acknowledge and always try to ask something about their kids or a hobby so there is no question as to the nature of our relationship. I hide my Linkedin connections for that very reason. There are a lot of companies who have little people running the net to see who has their resume out there, who is connected to recruiters and they will be asked about it. Yes, Ken Linkedin is regarded as a job board not only by a lot of recruiters but by a large number of employers. I had to laugh when i saw a few days ago a new recruiter anouncing on twitter that he was disconnecting from a lot of his contacts on Linkedin to protect the privacy of his candidates. I guess he didn't know that he could make his connection list private. In general - Courts are increasingly giving the employee latitude (notice - "Latitude" not "Freedom") when the employee is able to show that the terms of the agreement prohibit them from gainful employment. For example: My friend worked in a particular industry and the agreement prohibited him from continuing to work in that industry. In that case, he was able to get out of the agreement. THe non compete was ruled as too broad. In other circumstances where the candidate had regular access to proprietary information, particularly regarding unique technologies or manufacturing techniques, the non competes have been upheld. The point is this: Ask if a non compete has been signed. Advise the client company that there is or is not a non compete in effect. It might be considered an abrasive comment when Jerry indicates that he has used social media properly and you immediately in all your infinite wisdom and years of experience in the recruiting industry inform him that obviously he has not used it properly. It might be considered an abrasive comment when you wonder why people like yours truly can not evolve. Trust me puppy, the point both of us and several others are trying to make with you is social media has a place in recruiting as one of the pieces and parts of the process. It will not replace cold calls anymore than phone telemarketers will replace a face to face sales call. There is a reason why every company in America has a sales force on the street instead of a bunch of kids tweeting and ton of telemarketers calling their customers. It takes all of the pieces to make a whole. There are lot of us who have been smart enough to be early adapters of every new thing that came down the pike. Took a look, tried it and kept the parts that worked and discarded the parts that didn't. I was recruiting in MSN chat rooms set up by IT folks before you could spell social media. If you find that abrasive i would suggest that it is no less abrasive than your smart ass comment to Jerry, "Good Luck with your Landscaping" I will go back to my original comment on this goofy thread. "Fortunately new things come along all the time." None of them replace the ones that work, pieces and parts are added. Not only ill-advised but abrasive on more levels than i can count in my ever evolving world. I worry about them and when i spend an hour explaining the current state of affairs many times i am met with a blank stare a few nods like they understand what i am telling them then they go right back to telling me that if they made 90K in 2005 they really should make more now because that was 2005. I had one who said he would relo anywhere, had not worked due to family requirements for four years. I got him an interview, when i told him he would have to pay his own relo he informed me that his household goods were in S. America so he would need the company to pay for shipping to the U. S. I thought i had done the impossible by even getting the interview. @Marcus I am getting those by the dozens. I can understand if someone was caught in the recession in 2009 and don't want to put unemployed on the resume so i am asking them to put a one line explanation that says 2009 to curent - Laid off in September 2009. Part time, temp and at home responsibilities while looking for full time position. Employers understand that but there has to be some kind of explanation. A lot of professional people have been able to do things on a consulting basis but i have to beat them to put it on the resume. I finally had to tell one that unless he had been watching cartoons and eating Fritos for the last three years he had to put something on the resume. He said he had been working but it was not in his career field so he didn't want to put it on the resume. They just got caught so they are trying to make their lack of ethics yours. I would call all the other candidates that they interviewed to see if they had been contacted. If not give them a heads up to call you if this flakey client does contact them and ask them to come in on a trial basis.
