What really happened is I was am dealing with the hiring manager who is still working on this case.. and he is fine with the candidate and to pay the fees for this placement.. he is the main guy responsible for taking care of the interview and even who gave the offer... Now.. one candidate's friend who works with this client is acting weird by telling them that the candidate is his friend and he was trying to schedule an interview with these guys already and "no need to pay third parties for this guy" and this has gone to the top management... and this is what's creating the issue.. Before going ahead with this candidate, candidate did mention to me that he has given his resume to his friend earlier but no interviews took place and also no follow ups at all.. and I contacted him for another position - not the same position and he wanted me to go ahead with the submission. Before submitting I did enquire with the hiring manager if he has gone through this resume before and he did say no and I can very well sent the candidate to him for review. The core point here is - until now no interviews took place through anyone else other than me for this candidate with this client and the hiring manager knows that I even had to convince the candidate about accpeting this offer in terms of salary.... everything's done now from my part!!!!…; Added by Jolly Nibu at 9:19am on December 30, 2008

I know there are many people who will share your surprise and upset over his reaction to Karen’s comments. The irony in all of this is that the very brouhaha that John’s post was designed to avert has been overshadowed by the commotion which Karen appears to have consciously decided to ferment in favor of letting the post fulfill it original purpose. Without pointing fingers or name-calling I think Karen’s insistence on using this forum to grind out her agenda is selfish and inconsiderate of the general population. I can only assume that is the reason for the ire in Jason’s reaction when most would expect his usual tolerant and considered response. To be clear, my asking Karen if she had considered not saying anything in response to her complaining about being misconstrued, misquoted, and misrepresented was not an unreasonable question. An unrelenting ranting is not an effective way of persuading anyone to your point of view. It seems to me that if ranting is all that comes forth consider the alternative: shut up. I have no desire to silence to Karen. That runs contrary to everything I stand for personally, as a blogger and as an advocate of constructive [and sometimes destructive] dissent. I believe I echoed John’s suggestion that Karen’s point of view would have been better expressed on her blog where we could have had gone down the path she wanted without diverting the course of this post which, I might add, should have been memorialized for its reasoned advice not the” injustice” meted out to Karen and which has sapped the energy out of me for one. I have not changed my position. Karen can say what she likes on her page here and take it from there. She should have exercised good judgment in reading the sentiments of the people commenting here in stead of seeing this forum/discussion as a platform for pressing her own agenda. Again, to set the record straight: 1. Karen suggesting free speech is more virtuous than removing posts at the authors request is plain bull-crap. Notwithstanding she is entitled to her opinion and is not restricted in voicing it on her blog, anything published here that promotes ignorance, intolerance, and unbridled racism will be subject to the community's self-regulating systems. In this instance it seems to me that self-policing worked perfectly, at least up to the point that Karen decided to take it to the next level… 2. Suggesting that Karen is the voice of reason and articulates what the majority think, especially as it relates to the post in question, is double bull-crap. I don’t question there are many who agree with Karen on one position or another. I am one of them. But at some point you need to step back and ask why is that of all the vocal, opinionated, obnoxious and irritatingly obstinate people in this space – and we are not that few in number – it is always Karen who comes back for a martyr's crucifixion. 3. Again without name-calling or passive-aggressive intent what was the definition of insanity again? Jason suggesting Karen is insane may have no basis in its clinical diagnosis but if he is suggesting Karen is insane based on conventional wisdom, you are more than welcome to argue the point. If you rehearse the same rant over and over expected something other than what has happened countless times before, well, I rest my case with Jason's. 4. Karen will attest to the fact that I have spoken with her on each and every occasion in the last 2 years that she has been “victimized” online. I have counseled her on more than one occasion to not be discouraged and to press on as best she can. In principal, Karen and I are aligned on many issues. I have no ill-feelings toward Karen, to the contrary. More so the reason I am disappointed that she continues to do herself and her cause more harm than good. In closing, Jason has been the poster boy for thinking out of the box. He has created a space here for everyone and anyone to participate at any level that suits them best. He is seminal in his blog-think and trailblazing. What Karen has confused is “thinking out of the box” and “crossing the line.” She has crossed the line and made herself unwelcome here, by Jason at least. You know as well as anyone, that takes some doing. If Jason crossed the line in his response to Karen, while I cannot excuse it, I can understand it completely. I don't care about his age even though that could be a factor I am more concerned about his grades. I had a client turn down a cum laude law school graduate because he did not graduate high enough in his particular law school he was 25% in his class and for that school he needed to be at 20%. About the only time that grades kind of don't matter is when you are dealing with partner level attorneys that have a million dollars in portable business and with that being said I did have a client looking for a partner that grades did matter. The candidate has been out of law school for 7 yrs and should be on partner track which means that he should have portable business which he does not but he does know how to run a company and go from start up to success so that is a good selling point for him. Yes, Chris I am trying to market him proactively as I do not have a client with this need right now. What started out as a simple situation has now gotten complicated. To reconcile the difference in pay, the recruiter will need to twist some arms and try to balance the equation by trying to tweak the company's commissions, stock options and other benefits. I hope his deal goes through. If it doesn't, he may need to develop a flair for the obvious; that is, refer candidates who actually fit the company's salary profile. Here are some easy ways to keep things simple—and under control: 1. Listen to your candidates and employers. Before you try to impose your will, see if you can understand their point of view. As in a marriage, it's sometimes better to be loved than to be right. 2. Choose your work carefully. Given the choice, I'd prefer to do a few things well than a lot of things poorly. And so would your clients and candidates. 3. Leverage your competitive advantage. If you're strong in a particular niche, stay focused on your specialty and sidestep activities that scatter your attention or expose your weaknesses. 4. Seek out the queen bee (or the king bee). If you're asked to interface with multiple decision makers, try to discover who's really in charge and make that person your primary point of contact. Serving too many masters can get you into situations that are confusing, unproductive and politically sensitive. And above all, trust your gut. And for those of you who are already writing a rebuttal that goes like this: "Well, no one cares about working at Microsoft then!" Well it's probably not that. From the sounds of the rest of his note to me, only really interested parties send him connection requests. Which suggests to me that people don't waste their time writing a message and connecting with recruiters when they know they aren't qualified in the first place. Or if they're not even really interested in the job (aka desperate). Point is, give it a try. Put yourself out there, and if you get overwhelmed, take it down. I think you'll find, however, that you're only going to meet truly interested people; and qualified or not, that's a good thing to have.
