Just because of the sake of discussing something (or) opposing something, I feel we shouldn't write stories. When we write some content it should be understood by a layman., I am not able to understand most of your content., it's only yours. When most of them agree for some point of view, your disagree, when most of them disagree, you agree. It's not good all the time being contrarian. Our life is short, we should move along with the world. Nobody gives any award for being contrarian all the time., you are hurting yourself. This is not a Street fight (or) We are not politicians. Comment on: Topic 'Bypassing the Third Party Recruiter': contract houses, whoever gets the resume in first wins. If he candidate talks to more than one contract house, then s/he would often not own up to it. The theory behind this one is that many candidates think different contract houses have different 'ins' within the company. Playing all angles will yield them a better chance. Most managers didn't mind it. As a matter of fact, most manager would reply with something like 'Maybe you should have a better handle on new candidates then'. Bottom line, whoever entered them into the system first, wins. This was back in the late 90's when the market was scarce with 'good' employees. As for the third party recruiter to company directly, there should be a different dynamic altogether. I ALWAYS ask if the candidate has submitted themselves for a position as I've described. If they hesitate, I move on. Their response dictates the conversation at that point. If they give up, I move on, too. If they stop me and insist they hadn't applied for a position, then they at least have some understanding of the value recruiters could bring to the situation. Many know they will be OUT for the position if they are double submitted. On the off chance a candidate submits themselves to the position AFTER I've talked to them about it, I always tell the client what's been going on. ALWAYS. Topic: I'm Your Huckleberry: n grows so high in Indiana. I guess that is why the earth seeps into its people. And it is good earth. An earth rich with eons of hard work and good seed. Good people. Good people like Andy Gregory. In 2005, after years of recruiting for someone else, Andy decided he could do it, he could venture out on his own. He could break away from the recruiting firm mentality from which his career grew. Big decisions like this are usually acted upon because of a momentous incident. In Andy's case, it was personal. His own serious health issue drove him to make a career decision, a scary career decision, one he had been thinking about for a while but was reluctant to act upon. "My health crisis led me to say, 'Everything up until this point has driven me to go out on my own.' I had always thought there was a better way..., a better way to conduct business." There was, indeed. Andy is this unique blend of music lover, ultimate fighting champ, and grace under fire. His Doc Holliday approach, I'm your huckleberry, captivates most, even the Recruiting Animal who chastised on a recent show, "Let Andy talk, he's a soft-spoken guy, just trying to get a word in..." Andy usually just waits until there is a lull before he drops his words to the wise, like a time-released bomb. He is quick to say, however, "I don't really know what I bring to the table, I just know that I bring it." That's not really a personal brand one would or should create for oneself. But his lack of branding seems to work for him. "Conventional wisdom says that you should have a niche. Well, I don't." You're a daisy if you do. During the course of our conversation, Andy dropped this M-Thatch gem, "Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren't." How very Doc Holliday of him, right? Power is greater perceived than demanded. His marketing approach is simple, "I will deliver. What is it worth to you that when you have a position to fill, that you only look at qualified candidates? If I take on the assignment, I will deliver." Not if you give me this assignment but if I take on this assignment. A simple enough distinction but all the difference in the world. Andy's book of business comes from an established client base that he continually markets to and recruits for. He only approaches clients with quality and qualified candidates. And he prepares those candidates for interviews, "I am very quick to offer key facts and interview tips." Andy has embraced the notion that he is an unsexy generalist. "I don't have a niche. I started with a niche, but now I rely on the strength of my personality. I want you to think this: "Wow, that guy is just a little different." Comment on: Blog Post 'An Opportunity to Work!': wner that we are willing to pay more for what should be expected and reasonable behavior but when general behavior has been so bloody shoddy for a decade it truly is such a delight to see willing, enthusiastic, hard working kids who don't ask for something before they earn it that i am more than happy to throw money at them to reinforce that behavior. I also agree that kids who work at athletics are taught self discipline and accountability if they want to be part of the team. I see the same thing with kids who take care of animals. Not talking about the family dog or cat that mom or dad feeds and takes care of if junior forgets. The 4H kids who are responsible for the care and feeding of livestock have more of a sense of responsibility earlier because if they don't do it something dies or gets sick. And it is just hard work. Maybe if mom or dad insisted that kids really do have to feed the family pet that might be a good place to restart. Interestingly one of the eggs (evil great grand sons :) who is five is all turned on about a computer game where he buys, sells and trades fish and has to take care of them virtually. If he forgets to feed them or do what the game says he has to do they die and are gone from the game. He lost two fish a couple of weeks ago because he lost his ipod during a family move. He cried for two days because his fish died. His mom was ready to buy him two new fish but we decided to let him work through it. Thinking i was going to impart some great knowledge on his little head i asked him what he felt like he needed to do and what made him cry so much. He looked me right in the eye and said, "I spent all my allowance on those fish and i didn't get to have a funeral when they died." Still trying to make it a teaching moment i asked him if he had thought about it that if he had been responsible for keeping up with his ipod and feeding his fish they would not have died and he would not have lost his investment of his allowance. Big tears welled up and he said, "I know that Mims but what really makes me sad is that i missed the damn funeral." I'm sure he must have heard that somewhere, he is five. I gave it up. Looked at him and said, "get in the car, you are going to the barn with me. You get to help Ian clean up your pony's stall. If you had not lost your ipod your fish would not have died and you would not have missed the damn funeral, do you get it?" His reponse, "Yes ma'am", pony poop stinks." Me, "Right, so remember that the next time you miss a damn funeral." I dunno, maybe i should turn him over to somebody who would just take the ipod away if the fish died. But he didn't get paid for helping at the barn, maybe it is enough that he is sad because he missed the damn funeral.…; Added by Sandra McCartt at 3:07am on August 4, 2012
