Comment on: Blog Post 'What’s the Future Hold for Direct-Hire Placements?': seasonal peaks etc. Companies historically have argued that contract staff are less expensive in the long run because they do not have to pay for things like benefits, government programs and severance costs associated with permanent employees. In the future that may change, and companies may think twice about using contractors. Governments are cracking down on companies who use contractors effectively as permanent employees but circumvent the costs and benefits of employees. We can see this in the Microsoft decision, and many others. In addition, governments are enacting legislation that requires companies/agencies pay contractors notice of termination and severance for longer term contractors, and are beginning to take away the tax advantages associated with being a contractor. All of this may actually lead to people being less willing to be a professional contract, and companies wanting to use contractors less. Or it may simply lead to the need for more creative solutions in engaging contractors through "professional services" companies and the like. You say that in 5-10 years we're going to be asking "what happened to men?" - Well, in the 47 years since the original equal pay law went into effect... women are making (a conservatively estimated) 20% less on the dollar than men. I wouldn't call that a sea-change. In fact, I'd call that a lack of progress. 2. As to your being concerned that this influx of women college grads is going to overrun the system of male dominated business... get real. As a white male, I can clearly see the run the 'white male' has had in society... I don't think it's going to hurt if maybe someone else drives... or at least is paid an equal wage. There is clearly an issue with where women are being hired and what positions they are hired (or not hired) for. And the facts clearly show, they are not being promoted to the top spots - and pay scales - at a representative percentage. Comment on: Blog Post 'Shouldn’t HR be able to recruit their own people?': today’s companies have a wide scope of work to deal with; effectively the HR department has become the area that deals with everything that doesn't fit anywhere else. So the role can become overwhelming, you have performance management, remuneration management, industrial relations, Equal opportunity legislation, discrimination and harassment policies, actually policies and procedures for every part of staff management, retention and training. These are just to name a few. You are also correct that many companies are hiring Recruitment Professionals to work as part of their HR teams with the sole purpose of being proactive in their recruitment and finding passive candidates etc. This will become more and more prevalent over time, but given restrictions the Internal Recruitment consultant cannot put the focus on a role an external consultant can, given the large number of roles they need to fill. So they will out-source to specialist recruiters for the work. This is the way of the future and you will see HR and internal recruitment becoming separate functions, with outsourcing happening on specialist roles. Comment on: Topic 'How Will Obamacare Affect Recruiting in 2013?': oyers will drop healthcare forcing people onto government exchanges with time telling how healthcare works out under government control, so long as the fine is much lower than employee insurance premium cost as currently set up. I've seen the Post Office in action, it isn't pretty.As to covering the unemployed/uninsured, great, 30 million more insured. However, many doctors able to afford to retire will get ouf of medicine due to drastically cut reimbursements among other things already having a serious doctor shortage currently. So lots more people covered, lots fewer providers to treat them. As to how it impacts our recruiting business, for both the companies providing benefits and those paying the fine (which will rise in time, IMO) raising costs of doing business is never positive for companies adding to their payroll or our industry, IMO. I see an unalterable trend away from full time perm and towards non employee oriented work arrangements as businesses do what they always do till offered a profit incentive to employ workers.
