I have found that most people do not know how to write a resume, for that mater how to market themselves. A résumé is not designed to market you it is designed to do only one thing; prompt a question- which is “how did you do that?” Most resumes are written from the writer’s point of view and that is one of the reasons they are so difficult to write. They should be written from the reader’s viewpoint, someone who does not know you from Adam’s old fox. In some cases does not even know what you do, so how do you get them to call? Why should they give up 1 and a half to 2 and half hours of their personal lives to talk to you? These are questions I ask candidates everyday. One of the tricks I have use and trained over the years is a letter of introduction and 2-3 attached letters of testimony. I prefer instead of reference letters to use a letters of testimony. You will have to trust me that this a much better tool. I would be glad to supply an example by e-mail. I have a letter of introduction and 2-3 attached letters of testimony that is 98 % effect in getting a face to face over a resume. This is an awesome tool and sets you apart from the 43,000 other resumes in the pile. As far as trying to change the way people conduct interviews. It is a comfort thing not a customary thing to use a resume. This process can be changed, I do it everyday with out a hitch… but to do it successfully is topic another topic for a different day. What happens next,as reported by many jobseekers, is they get what has been documented by many as a "form letter" from an EXpert Resume writer at the Ladders telling them in no uncertain terms that their resume totally sucks buttermilk. But never fear, the Ladders, for a fee of only 700 to 900 bucks will prepare a super dooper,professional resume so they can be "more attractive or irresistible" to an employer. Alrighty........ Here is where Kelly's take may be right on target. Let's say that Ms jobseekers has been looking for a job for six months trying to keep it between the hedgerows and pay the rent. She comes back and says,"ouch" , I can' afford that right now". So now,the Ladders doesn't want to lose an "upsell".....maybe Kelly is right on target....What better time for the "resume expert" to say, "I see that you have applied to several jobs and have been rated low by several employers/recruiters, it appears ,as you seem to have the required skills, that it could be your resume is not presenting your skills in the right way just as we thought in our review of your resume" Now I haven't heard the upsell but I have done some extensive searches for Ladders resume service. The reports of scare tactic upsells, form letters,resumes being reformatted with no change , along with some pretty funny,albeit ,disgusting reports of people sending Ladders prepared resumes back to Ladders then getting the same upsell form letter.. I am sure there are people who paid for the resume, thought it was fine and got a job. People who are satisfied don't make as much noise as those who realized they got conned or it wasn't the resume to begin with. As Kelly says,horrid, cliche filled, I agree , I have seen many of those cookie cutter ,action word filled beasts myself. So perhaps the rating system really is an upsell tool. As another blogger commented, "eeewwwwww'", a scripted upsell tells me a lot." Topic: My Very First Job In Corporate America: Hard Lessons Learned: classes such as word processing, typing, and stenography (just to name a few). These courses were to help students gain new skills to apply for a secretarial/office career in Corporate America. I had an early morning typing class every day that started at 8:30am. It was a class I selected as my major. Every day I would show up 30 minutes late. I didn’t care for the class much. Never thought I really needed it. I preferred to sleep in and get to class when I was good and ready. Well, When it was time to be a part of the work-study program, the school found me a job and arranged for me to start working at the Palmer House the following week. The position was for a Typist. I was excited about my first new job. I arrived my first day at work feeling very nervous. The head secretary showed me where I would be sitting. She than handed me a hand written letter and said, “We need you to type up the letter.” My heart skipped a beat. I sat in a chair with a big old typewriter in front of me. It was the kind of typewriter where the big metal keys hit the typebar and hit a ribbon. I nervously started typing. Ten seconds into the typing, I yank the sheet of typing paper out of the type writer, balled it up and threw it into the trash. Same cycle continued for 15 minutes. Mistake after mistake. Balled up paper being thrown into the office trash can. I literally over flowed the waste basket. I just couldn’t get it right. Needless to say, I was fired my very first day on the job. I remember as it were yesterday. It was early afternoon. I was pretty devastated and embarrassed to say the least. Since that job experience, I promised I would apply myself to learn new skills so something like this would never happen again. I kept learning new skills ever since and can’t seem to tame that side of me. I wouldn’t want to. Now, making that promise doesn’t mean I didn’t make any more mistakes along the way in my career journey. I’ve made tons but I’ve always chose to learn from them. I wouldn’t go back to change any of my work experiences. Good or bad. It has attributed to my work ethics over the years and who I am today. There are many ways people learn and grow and sometimes life lessons are the most impactful. It certainly was for me. There were many other lessons I’ve learned throughout my working career but that’s a whole other many stories I’ll share with you at a later time.
