Topic: An Un-Bordered Odyssey: e the 7+ hour trek North to meet up with the rest of the RecruitFest gang. I can tell you that I was right in my thinking. It was not only interesting it was a great time and exactly what RecruitFest is all about - free verse - like open mic night at the local bookstore. On the road to RecruitFest - imagine this- my cabin mates: Jerry was the Master and Commander of the Odyssey and Andy was the Master and Commander of the iPod. We met with Border Patrol as we entered Canada. Jerry had me scared with with his "true" stories of strip searches and contraband. My last Canadian border encounter was in the airport and there was no issue. But today, I was seriously a-feared. I thought Jerry was going to crack when the border patrol officer asked, "Why are you here?" Andy just looked straight ahead and never said a word. I waved anxiously from the back seat - now, that's team work. I think we're lucky we didn't get escorted to the "special parking" zone, where Canada would get to know each of us a little better. Our Goal: Toronto. Our Quest: RecruitFest '09 Making good time and stopping only occasionally for potty breaks and some fast food, we battled over social media, sampled various types of music, sent out a few tweets, laughed and only cried when we learned Dave Mendoza wouldn't be joining us in our native Toronto. An interesting conversation centered around how different recruiting and search has become over the last several years, whether or not social media has had anything to do with that, and in particular, the evolution of communication among recruiters, the open nature of these new discussions. Comment on: Video 'Apple Store on Black Friday': ecause we get to recharge our minds with information from other people in the industry, and we can gauge what we are doing against what others are doing. We also get to reconnect with people that we have met along the way within our industry. The same can be done with our candidates. The problem is most recruiting teams can't afford to hire a person like Jason to keep a site alive like this. It would mean convincing management that you need someone almost full time focussed on community building. Now some may say that this shouldn't be hard but I can tell you that my resources are very finite and this would most likely be considered a luxury. I would be interested to know if anybody has cracked the code on this though. Also...while I agree with Laurie I think there is something bigger going on with Apple. They have created an amazing emotional connection with their product. I'm working on my iMac right now and this thing is just sexy. It's the first thing you see when you walk into my house. I have it in the center of my space. Watch people in airports playing with their iPhones. It may as well be their second wife or girlfriend. It's the equivalent of lifting a 95 lb. dumbell as the hottest girl in the gym walks by. I think you get the point I'm trying to make. And if you dispute that think about the guy sitting next the guy with the Apple who has the HP sitting on his lap. I kind of imagine this guy wearing Dockers, a shirt tucked in so far it's touching his knees and he is thinking about how to merge cell A and cell B for his presentation. I'm obviously exaggerating to make a point. Apple is just fantastic at making people feel hot when they own their product. I think this is what drives people in flocks to their stores.
