Event: MDA Stride and Ride: e & Ride Team will join other Teams and walk together to raise money to fight neuromuscular disease. CAUSE: All of the funds raised by the Stride & Ride Teams will be designated to the MDA Program chosen by each team member and their leader (for example: ALS, Summer Camp, Research, etc…). The money raised will provide hope for those living with one of the 43 neuromuscular diseases in the Southern Nevada area. GOAL: Each team members’ minimum fund raising goal of $85 or more will fund one minute of MDA scientific research. The 2009 Stride & Ride fundraising event will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. All donations are tax-deductible. Topic: Closed for Good, er, Bad: p for me and my daughter, then a senior in high school. Affordable airfare, a delighful and historic hotel was selected, planned-out meals and entertainment all booked and paid for in a snap, all done well ahead of time. I kept a meticulous file and double- and triple-checked the plans and confirmation numbers before our departure. No problems at the airport, no delays or issues. The hotel, upon our arrival, upgraded our room to a suite and offered us free breakfast. Several restaurant reservations fell seamlessly in line with fun entertainment plans. The trip was a fine example of proper planning and follow-thru, that is, until..., Our final meal in New York City. Reservations had been made for a special dinner at a well-known restaurant; I had prepaid - $75 each, not including the tip or any extras like alcoholic beverages or desserts. We anxiously arrived and were exposed to a highly agitated maitre'D who seemed to hate us instantly, well, as soon as I handed over my print-out with my confirmation number proving we had paid online. We were seated next to the kitchen doors, so every waiter rushed past us with a dangerously extended elbow or jostling plates. A cheap photocopied menu, with front and back printed upside down from each other I might add, was slapped on our table, with only three entrees from which "we" would be allowed to order. We were then left alone for almost forty minutes before our order was taken. The restaurant was almost empty for we had made early reservations to immediately follow a Broadway matinee. And yet, we were seated in a horrible location. The food, when it finally arrived was horrible, the service worse. We left disappointed that our trip had been seemingly spoiled by one lousy meal. I recently read that Tavern on the Green was slated to close down. After our dreadful experience, I am not surprised. My stubborn nature drove me to go ahead and leave an undeserved 25% tip, and speak briefly with a non-caring staff supervisor. An ensuing letter brought no response and I learned a valuable lesson about customer service and how to better appreciate even the least of my customers/clients. Let me add some other ways that I think are important, also: Salary and benefits - this is something that says "I want you to live a comfortable life" and "I value your contribution to the job". I believe that any employer should show the candidate/employee that he values and respects him/her by offering a decent salary. For example, if you hire a network administrator, you should know that the network administrator salary is around $57,000 per year, so you should offer this amount or a little bit higher. A good candidate will do a research before hand and if you offer him lower than he expects, he knows that soon there might appear other difficult situations like this. Also, a candidate/employee values benefits like medical insurance, gym membership, free breakfast/lunch, free transportation to/from work and others. This way the employer shows that he really cares about him making it to work, feeling healthy and productive and also safe. Flexible time - I can't emphasize enough how important this is. This says that "I want you to be relaxed and not worry about being late a few minutes or not being able to work from home when you're sick - I value your mental health". Being flexible regarding work hours and work from home is a strong way to say that you care about your employee. I believe that an employee's mental health is the most valuable. He should be able to work from home if he feels sick or the weather is unfriendly Also, he shouldn't run to work if he got up a little bit late or arrive scared that his boss will yell because he was 15 mins late. All of these contribute to the employee's well-being and you should emphasize the fact that you care as much as you can, in order for him to give out the best and fulfil successfully the tasks that he's being attributed.
