When I get voice mail what I say is something like " Hi Steve, I don't know if I am in the right direction. You were refered to me (very important comment) can you please call me back at 12345 Thanks Elise Reynolds". I don't say why I am calling but I sound a bit helpless because I am not sure if I am in the right direction. So about half the time I get a call back. OK so once I get the call back or if I am lucky enough to get the person on the phone I am very direct. I say something like: "Oh Hi Steve, I found your information doing some research, I am a recruiter. I understand you are in produced water processing and I would very much like to run something past you very quickly" (I always say very quickly). "Is this a good time?" Yes - I tell them quickly what I have pausing after three sentances to assess their interest. If it is a bad time I ask to call back at a better time. might know. If they might be interested I ask if they have time to discuss further now, not now when. So basically, my line is not very clever. It is direct, to the point with plenty of deference to the time of the person I am calling. Unless they understand what the value is that you offer and feel they have a need for it, then there's no sense of urgency to return your call. Generally, with cold calls I see it as a timing thing. If they have a need and something in my message resonates with them, maybe I'm aware of an opening and reference a possible candidate or how my specialization matches what they need, then I may hear back....if there's no need now, then I certainly don't expect a call back. I understand that though, as there's only so much time in the day! But, I'll keep checking in, and eventually the timing will be right. I also take Nick's approach too and do a lot of upfront research before making a single call. I may make fewer calls than other recruiters but I will have targeted well and usually it pays off! With in depth information about skills, language standards, names of personnel, earnings in labour markets there are a lot of doors that can be opened higher up the management chain. It is the job of most recruitment managers to know as much about their skills markets as they can. They should know exactly what companies will employ the people that they are looking for, both locally and outside of commuting distance. They should know the type of University courses that candidates will have completed. Topic: Moving to a new sector of staffing: he drastic shortage of job orders. This may sound a little obvious, but if the ship you’re on is taking on water, its time to jump to a different ship. Contrary to what I’ve heard from some people, I do not believe it makes you a tougher or better recruiter to suffer in a languishing corner of the staffing industry. Yes, it would be nice to be the last of the Mohicans in your field of recruiting by outlasting all the other recruiters that are trying to stick it out too. But if you’re not one of those that are thriving in your niche now, I doubt its going to change any time soon. So, what industry is really hot right now? Well, for starters, health care is going through a boom unlike anything we’ve ever seen in the staffing industry. Imagine the dot com craze on steroids. And yet, most of recruiting friends are still hammering away at cold calling for IT jobs. Energy and Gas are doing pretty well, and ‘green energy’ will eventually pick up steam, but these don’t hold a candle to health care staffing right now, or for the foreseeable decade. Just as you learned your current niche of recruiting (terminologies, candidate databases, etc.), you can easily learn another one. And this time, maybe chose something that’s recession proof for a few decades as opposed to a short term boost. Ok, enough of my rant. Topic: Fortune Favors the Bold..., and maybe a fever...: my swearing, I fed my fever. And I suppose that is ok, because I do feel better. A bit better. I have a fever that is hanging right around 102° - I haven't had a fever in nineteen years, seriously. I guess, I should look at it as a gift horse, for it is my understanding that a fever is cleansing, it is your body eliminating an infection or virus. I have no idea, because I am so completely unfamiliar with having a fever and I apologize should this post become incomprehensible and delirium sets in. I have dosed up on ibuprofen, I have had a cool, wet cloth on my forehead and neck, I am getting my share of water and I am going to bed early - so I am resting. I have followed "the" known-rules. And my lovely daughter just gave me the best massage ever. As I face my obvious human-ness, the fact that I am weak, that I can't do everything or be everything all the time, I realize how lucky I have been. I am rarely sick and almost never have fevers. 400 mgs of Advil PM awaits me, as well as liquids and rest for the next twenty-four hours. Being a working mom has led to poor self-preservation habits. And I found out something, I don't like being ill. I don't like not managing my own destiny and having to rely on a thermometer to say I am well. I don't like aches in my joints and pains in my neck and head. And most of all? I don't like slowing down. As a matter of fact, I hate it. I am one of those people that has always worked through the pain. For if I work through it, it is barely noticeable, right? And this is because I don't like staying where I am. I want to always be excelling, finding the better way. I have always lived by the principle that moving forward keeps you from standing still. Seems obvious, right? But so many forget this clear and simple observation. Moving forward keeps you from standing still. The minute I stand still, I am destined to fall behind. And while there is safety in standing still, there is also no chance for greatness. I don't know about you, but I want to be great. I want to provide great things for my children, for my love, and for my work. I read somewhere that "fortune favors the bold." I dare to be bold, to not sit still, to fight through a fever and find the greatness waiting for me. Maybe I'm foolish, but then again, maybe I will find favor... Aww, Fortuna, the Goddess of Luck - she is more likely to help those who take risks... I am waiting Fortuna... Comment on: Topic 'Troll Headlines': poken on the phone twice ,both times after a troll episode and very briefly, never done business together but the observation was made by Jer once that we must be twins sepertaed at birth. We have the same hard headed, no nonsense "shoot straight, keep your word, don't be a jerk, i'm just a little girl/guy from Texas/Indiana trying to get by in the harsh, cruel world, philosophy that includes watching out for small animals, small children and those who are in trouble. We even have the same company name - which probably came subconsciously or consiously from where we started in this business. Collectively over 55 years of thid stuff which is a bit more than 10 paychecks if we got paid twice a month for five months. The only problem with us being twins seperated at birth is that i happen to be 25 years older than he is so if we are twins one of our mothers was a real doer of interesting deeds or his dad was a traveling salesman who sold snakeoil in the Texas panhandle in the early 40's as a teenager before he got to Indiana. Could be since we both like to fish for both things with glassy eyes,scales and people. May be an anaology there, naw, that's cold, funny but not true..in most cases. There is an old saying in the Texas panhandle and probably in Indiana too since Jer has the "Coon LIne" stuff at hand. When somebody does something that causes a mess or things go to hell in a handbasket somebody can be counted on to say. "Well ...this is where the coon shit on the pump handle." Now most of you are either not old enough or "rural" enough to understand just how bad that is since you probably never had to drag out on a cold morning to pump water for livestock only to discover coon poop on the pump handle. But trust me. It will irritate one far beyond waiting in line for security at Heathrow or misplacing one's tickets to the art fair at Harvard Square. Talk about evolution. Did i ever think when i was knocking coon poop off a pump handle that i would be spending this much time debating with a dopey kid about the merits of social media. Uh, no but that's what happens when the coon shits on the pump handle. Jerry Albright said: Interesting side bar on the coon thing - I never thought I'd need something like this but decided to give it a shot. It was only $7.59 and so far I've got to say I'm impressed. When I was younger I would have never thought I needed it - but I've learned over the years to always try new stuff. If it works - great!
