"It's not what i do that is different, it's what i don't do." "I play by your rules, i don't call you 50 times a day or five minutes after a candidate interviews to get feedback or try and hard sell my candidate. I expect feedback or questions in a reasonable time frame". If you give me one listing i will not go to your web site and run ads /recruit for every position you have posted then try to submit candidates for positions that you did not list with me." "I don't call your hiring managers unles you ask me to meet with them or have a phone conference." I don't throw a kick ass righteous fit when you turn down the candidate i thought could walk on water." I will find out why i missed it and change direction instead of arguing with you or telling you that your hiring manager is a dumb ass who needs to be replaced". (that by the way was a quote that i heard last week from an HR director as to why they had dropped a recruiter off their radar)."I won't bore you with long speeches about how wonderful i am, i will just do my job." I don't send candidates that are marginal just to prove that i can flop something in your ATS so i have some goofy reason to call you and ask you about a C level candidate." I don't call you to whine that your job order, company , internal recruiter, other recruiters you work with or anything else sucks buttermilk." I got my ego in order a long time ago, if i don't know something about the specs you give me i'll ask , listen and then go research until we both learn something. I am not a one trick pony that can only recruit in one vertical. I have placed everything from fast food managers to subspecialty physicians who make a purple squirrel look like a garden variety weed. You have to move from one division of your company to the other so i can move with you as we learn to work together. Besides all the don'ts that make you hate recruiters and their high blown bullshit, i am funny as hell and i will listen when you want to bitch about everybody you work for and with , the crazy candidate you brought in who did some nutty thing that made you look like an idiot and i won't tell anybody. Then we can get over our cheap selves, pick up the girls or the boys and go fill a position. If you need me to cut a fee a little bit to get you some help, i'll do it. If you ask me to help you fill 10 positions by the end of the month i will shoot you a quote for a turnkey fee if i get and exclusive or a retainer. I don't want to be the person you call when all else fails and heat is on. I do want to be the person you call the day you get the req and you want to fill it fast. I will stay up all night looking for candidates and i will work on weekends to help you hit your deadline. You can call me at home or on my cell anytime. My goal is to be part of your team, not some ass that you have to call and don't really want to. Most of all i want to prove to you that not all recruiters are arrogant, ignorant, narcisitics jerks who pride themselves on knowing more about what you do than you do while driving you crazy in the meantime and wanting to be overpaid to terrorize you. Topic: Cooler Talk: Not Everything Counts: esult of active participation in social media. James Mayes stopped me that afternoon in London, this was our only IRL connection. But I was impressed by his wit and desire to interact with as many people, globally, as possible. I recently caught up with Mayes over the phone following a number of tweets back and forth. Twitter has a tendency to be where I go to get news; it’s my favorite water cooler and James is always hanging around the cooler. Social recruiting / social media has been a part of his life and his business since 1994. You could say, he’s an early adopter. Long before there was a www, there were bulletin boards that allowed for electronic mail, news dispatches and public messaging. This seems to be a precursor to chat rooms, IM and even Twitter. James had a natural affinity for IT and was an early player on FidoNet. The old infrastructure of FidoNet is still there, hanging around, probably a quiet cooler these days. James seems to have passed through a few recessions, the last one, he spent a lot of time buying computer parts, building PCs and then selling those rebuilt computers to other students. Hey, it paid his bar bill. He somehow managed to exit university with a degree but now needed a career. He had a great IT background, but he was not quite technical enough to work in the directly in the industry, but certainly had enough knowledge to recruit in the space. He knew the talk and he loved the industry, so, why not? He settled in at a recruiting firm that was later bought out by Hayes, where he worked on bigger accounts and eventually did some consulting that ultimately led him to a position with Alexander Mann, a staffing agency in the UK with more than 1000 employees providing services for clients in over sixty countries. Global, indeed. Recruiting led James to Project Management which led to some cooler (metaphorical and literal) talk about how to use Twitter to recruit. The problem Mayes see now is that recruiters fail to really build the right network to which they broadcast. “Engagement is the important thing.” Thoughts ran between James and partner, Richard Sutcliffe about how their knowledge could help recruiters put jobs out there. Thus, TweetJobs was born. Several integrations with a decent range of job posting distributors and TweetJobs now has a market presence and can do the same for their clients – helping them optimize tweets, advising on the type of audience to build and how to do just that, creating RSS feeds, and take a serious, upclose look at engagement. Listening at the water cooler, so to speak. The most incredible part of this story? Officially launched this past May and broke even by August. Yep, broke even in three months. Only in the fastest growing tech arena. TweetJobs knows that Twitter and social media are constantly evolving and they stand at the ready to evolve right along with them. We know that those who don’t, will fall behind. We know this. With an eye on the future, “That is a tough one to call. Clearly, we want to grow and we have investors that would love to see a significant return. The question is how to get it right and not dilute the focus.” This is serious biz to the guys at TweetJobs. Not just talk. “Twitter is far more discoverable, far more relevant than we know. It is perfect for SEO; this change is a huge differentiator for smaller companies.” It sounds like it levels the playing field a bit. “There is a trust issue in business these days. It is not about protectionism, it’s about trust.” When I asked him about the return on investment for social media, he bounced back with a quote from Einstein that he uses often, “Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.” James finished our conversation with one last point, “A number of clients ask me what differentiates us. We are very much a tech enabler. Topic: With the Pressures That Come With A High Stress Job like Recruiting - How Do You Keep Your Sanity?: hat said, what are those things you do besides momentarily stepping away from the phone and the keyboard or taking a vacation? What do you do that satisfies your other interests, that are legal in 50 states and Puerto Rico? I'd like to know and I think others in the RBC would be interested to know as well. For me it's photography and training & competing in Masters and Senior Olympic Track & Field Meets. Both are for fun and pleasure...and sometimes they tie into recruiting, but that's for a different discussion. More importantly, what are those hobbies & interests that you engage in that help you balance your personal and professional life? Remember, without some "balance" you end-up being right-handed. Where do think the term "red eye" comes from? Training for and competing in The Discus Throw event is meaningful for me on so many levels. I literally picked it up in high school fielding it for my older brother who also competed at the All-State qualifying level. He inspired me to get into the sport. Though there is hard work, and tension--it is a different kind of tension and hard work. And the sweat equity payback actually relieves the different kind of tension that can build in my job as a recruiter. It poses a physical release as well as a physical build-up that is healthy for me, particularly as I get older. Getting up for it gets harder only if you let yourself get rusty. The old saying, "Use it or lose it" is so true going into my 63rd year. Plus the competition is invigorating--win or lose--I have something to show for it--my training, effort and accomplishments. I've also end up meeting new people--all competitors. I find myself giving and getting training tips and advice on how to correct noticeable bad habits that even the most experienced athlete can exhibit. The Discus throw is very much like ballet with an implement to throw. It requires great balance, speed, timing and power to make it look effortless. It's a spin and a half of gathering forces that violently whips or slings a discus into the air in the hope that a kind wind catches it and takes it ever further. An unkind wind can take a discus straight up and drop it at your feet, daring you to try again. It's a beautiful thing to see--a discus spinning so smoothly as it swiftly glides through the air. Gaining altitude and distance as it goes--it finally lands near or past your personal best distance. When it does that it's a thing of beauty for an old and grizzled discus thrower. I ought to know.
