One of the things that often allows firms to move from vendor to business partner is to become specialists in specific industries. For example in our market we have a heavy concentration of Medical Device both large manufacturers and start ups. To better service these clients, I subscribe to several industry newsletters, read up on recent conferences and keep an internal tracking of successful projects and placements we have done within that industry. By doing these things on meetings I can speak about issues facing industry leaders, economic trends, and because we focus on accounting, I can discuss how various FASB pronouncements will impact current financial trends. This narrow focus allows me to really penetrate an industry and provide both permanent and project matches that really service both current and upcoming needs. Once the clients begin contacting you to plan for upcoming hiring then you have definitely transitioned into a true service partner. Because you have business lines incorporating areas in constant flux, including technology and healthcare there should be opportunities to really develop certain areas of specialization. Comment on: Blog Post 'The Kult of Influence on Recruiters: Klout, Kred and PeerIndex': believe your work (and thus compensation) is tied to some sort of larger "branding, consumer, product" experience. I've watched this happening for quite a while. Perhaps you may want to take your Klout score and see if Heinz will pay you to tweet about ketchup or perhaps Molson will offer you a few cases to to give Golden a thumbs-up on facebook. The most successful recruiters (sorry - I will go ahead and put myself in that category) rely on quite a few things before any form of social media/branding/influence/klout. The amount of effort it would take - and concentration/focus - to build a "community" or "reach" or whatever the hell you want to call it - that can offer specific RESULTS when you need them is staggering. Note: This is only applicable if you do NOT place recruiters - or run social media circus camps - or get paid to tweet to 10,000 followers. Topic: Go, Speed Racer: ime for an appointment I had in Costa Mesa. Life seemed right. The music was good, I felt happy... Until..., I drove under an underpass and heard a siren. I looked around thinking maybe an ambulance needed to pass or that a fire truck was in the opposing lanes of traffic... Then I happened to glance in my review mirror and saw a single motor cop behind me with his lights ablazing, siren screaming and realized, with dread, that it was me - me - mom of four, good student, hard-worker, speeder me - that me, that he wanted. I made my way over to the next exit and left the freeway - all lingering happiness quickly rushing out the tips of my fingers as I clenched the steering wheel and made my way into a parking lot. I parked and waited for my lashing. None came. Just a ticket book and the promise to see me in court, should I decide to fight it. A ticket. A speeding ticket. Traffic school awaits me. Hopefully, I can find a comedy school that will feed me something other than pizza. Lessons - I guess I need them. My mind was elsewhere. It was not on the task at hand. I think we live in an ADD world. Even when I should have been concentrating on the couple of tons of steel I was driving 80 miles per hour - I wasn't. I was thinking about the email I didn't answer earlier. I was thinking about the presentation I was about to give. I was thinking about the luncheon I was attending the next day. I was thinking about the text I had just received from my daughter. But not about the one thing I should have been thinking about. Driving. Where is your mind when speaking with clients or when composing an email to a candidate? Where is your mind when evaluating an employee? Are you cramming so much into your brain that it seems almost impossible to fit in one more thought? One more client? One more interview? I have heard it said that recruiters have ADD..., is it a prerequisite? Is it necessary in order to do this job? The ability to fully coordinate a direct recruitment requires a significant amount of thought and diverse action and conversations. To search high and low, read the HMs mind, know the candidate inside and out, leap tall buildings in a single bound. Hold on, while I catch my breath. I think I will take the diagnosis. Comment on: Blog Post 'Win a Close Encounter to RecruitFest '09': iter also talks about their "retreat" experience and it got me to thinking about the word "retreat" . I harkened to the writer's words because the experiences of living in the moment is what has brought me the greatest joy in my lifetime. It has also brought me peace and success. I think about the experience of sourcing and the concentration and delving that it entails. I believe any activity that we engage in mindfully (meaning being wholly present) can bring us the kind of relief that the writer hints at in his article. The first comment in the string asked why does the experience have to happen in a specific place? I agree that it doesn't. It can happen right where we are, sitting in the chair we're sitting, in the car we're driving, in the ditch we're digging if that's what we're called to do.
