Topic: Color My World: set according to color and length of sleeve, leg, or skirt. It works out well for me. But, I miss my file folders in all different colors, I miss having a reason to use my 36 different colored sharpies. I still keep them around. I always will. With our transfer to and fascination with "all things virtual," have we lost the need to organize, color-code, systemize, and categorize? Oh yes, I know there are virtual folders and if you are like me, you can color code events and calendar items in Outlook, but is it the same? I used to love sectioning off the Director of Business Development candidates in the red file folders, while the Director of Product Development candidates were in blue, and the Organic Chemist' candidates were in purple. Holding paper resumes that were marked up with my handwritten notes gave me such satisfaction. It showed the work, in my hand! Handwritten professional references on a yellow pad were time consuming to transcribe but those conversations were etched into my brain because they were etched by my hand. Relationships seemed more solid because there were mounds of paper behind them, backing up every conversation, not collapsible notes in a CRM or added details in an online address book. Business cards went somewhere instead on in stacks on desks and tossed in drawers. The notes on a business card meant something and were always visible as you cruised through your rolodex. I miss the way we used to touch paper, write on paper, file paper, find paper and read from paper. It is earthy, it is visceral. Like face-to-face communication - almost indelible. It was the cement, the glue, the binding, and the handshake. The hash marks on my daily call sheet, the whoop when a resume came in the mail or via fax, the hand-written thank you note from a candidate or hiring manager. The article is titled Social Recruiting: The REPLACEMENT FOR COLD CALLING not the replacement for the phone. These avenues allow you to get a short introduction to a person to the point where you can pick up a phone knowing they are expecting you to call. If you read what I wrote again you wont ever find a line that talks about how old school recruiting standards are outdated or antiquated, just that what I sense from recruiters is the hardest part about the job is cold calling, and with social media there are ways you can avoid calling cold. It's people like you and Jerry who bring up age and feel entitled because you've been doing the job for 20 years so you are an authority and the trends you've seen in the past will remain in the future. I didn't bring up age, you did and if you want to talk about what you were doing while I was in overalls that's fine and it shows your character as a person who cant have a reasonable discussion without trying to enter little digs. Well lets talk about now, now I'm not in overalls...now I'm the Marketing Manager for 3 companies: an extremely successful RPO company, and 2 tech recruiting firms who are performing far and above projected expectations for the year. We have over 300 recruiters through all avenues, every day of which I get either emails or calls about how they met a candidate they placed on Twitter or went to a meetup group and placed someone they met that wasn't even looking for a job. Tim, a few comments up put it best: "It's not the tool but the carpenter; it's not the typewriter but the writer; and it's not social media but the recruiter that's going to make it effective." If you're not having success with it...fine then don't do it...but it doesn't mean others aren't. So when you comment in here, don't speak in definitive, speak on your personal experience. You don't know, just like I don't know but at least I'm not counting it out. The format for submission to the 'Definite Recruiting Blog Promotion Document' would be a paragraph with specific advise on some area of blog promotion and the paragraphs might be modifiable by others (Jason can decide as he knows what Ning is capable of). I'll start the process .... more in hope than expectations (Joel, Dave, Shally, help us all out here .... ) Now that I have completed this I can see that a paragraph would be needed to teach people how to create an RSS feed for submission to sites, and another on Page Rank would be good. Anyone? (I can also see that if the paragraphs are specific enough they could be arranged according to the blog creation and promotion lifecycle.) RSS Feed Submissions (Free) At this stage in the game you have already gained an understanding of blogs and RSS feeds, otherwise you would not be a part of RecruitingBlogs. Now it's time to use that knowledge to promote your site, and get some subscribers, or at least some viewers. And what better way to do this than to submit your site to as many RSS feeds as possible. You can find services on the net that will submit your site for US$99 but you can never be sure of these, and you could end up in places you don't want to be, Debbie-does-more-than-we-could-imagine.com for example. What if you you could submit your blog yourself, one feed at a time. That would take too long, right? Not so. I have done this in the last week and I can guarantee you that it's going to take you less than a day to submit your site to all of the RSS feeds below. At the very least you will get a small increase in traffic, and at worst you will save yourself the trouble of looking for all the feeds. Try it, it's free, and only costs you time.
