From this I have learned to put important emails in a draft folder before sending them out. There are two issues here: The policy of the company, which the individual as supervisor also needs to reinforce. Understanding the broader context here is important, such as the reason and background for this "harsh" policy. Secondly, as an HR professional it greatly concerns me that in this day and age we still manage the termination process poorly. Could she have been offered the opportunity to resign, or perhaps some other alternative, such as a probationary period. This is where good companies demonstrate their values! Treating someone with dignity and respect, helps that person moving on, if they have to find a new role. The fact that she was honest about her mistake indicates that she will learn from this process, as she disclosed this openly to Rayanne. Topic: Driving the Process, Instead of the Process Driving You: en I was about eleven years old, I stayed up late one night with my little brothers Out the bedroom window, we watched the lightening dance across the sky and felt the thunderous surges that followed. I would say I was scared but then my brothers would know that, indeed, I was. We listened to "Bye, Bye Love" on the phonograph, singing and giggling, all while trying to control the fear we felt as the storm raged on outside. A fun memory, even though at the time I would have sworn I wasn't having fun. Almost every time I hear the crack of thunder or "I'm through with romance, I'm through with love...," I remember that night and the distraction we created for ourselves to overshadow the panic that clutched at us with every flash. A mere distraction, to be sure, but one that worked, and I suppose, one that still works. We talked our way through a bad time, we sang our way past our fears and then saw beauty in what had initially scared us so dreadfully. We've laughed about this over the years, shared the story with our own children, and will forever value the experience. "Do you remember when..." Learning to face your doubts or do a thing you don't want to are steps toward maturity. Taking and making the calls you'd rather not, seeing past initial ugliness, forgiving the dread, driving the process instead of the process driving you, stealing home when really, by all accounts, you should have stayed on third, calling in reinforcements once you realize you can't face it alone, broadcasting your liabilities in an effort to turn them into assets, and learning to love it. The evolution of you and how you interact with others. Do you play nice? Do you invite change or do you hide under the covers, hoping the storm will pass leaving business/life, as you know it, unscathed? Put on the music and learn a new way to dance or put on the music and sing so loudly that you only hear your own voice? I'm not prepared to sing an opera alone, so I'll change processes if need be, I'll call for a back-up pitcher, if need be and I'll see my weaknesses as areas where I can learn instead of them as way to keep others down. Comment on: Topic 'Looking to do freelance recruiting...how do I get started?': candidates during after hours and if so you probably want to have something in writing that they are all right with this, don't just assume they are fine with it. They may be fine with it but I would not make that assumption. Also, if you start working on some positions that potential for a placement will become a distraction during your normal work day as you will start to monitor your personal e-mail account a bit more trying to keep the process moving. You probably could get away with moon light recruiting using your employers resources, and using some work time (here and there) to communicate with companies and candidates for your personal efforts. The big question is, is that a risk you are willing to take and that is something you need to answer. As has been pointed out, there are multiple 'potential' issues (some moral) and you may be putting your job in jeopardy if your employer became aware of this and did not approve. Comment on: Blog Post 'Dear John...': sage across to agencies and other suppliers that every time they call they cause an unwelcome interruption and distraction, one that in this day and age is not needed. I have never dealt with a company as a result of a cold call, ever, irrespective of what they are selling, at home or at work! If I need a new agency supplier I will ask my network. A network of their customers or candidates; a network that will actually tell me which company or which so called consultant provides the best level of service; a network that will give me an honest balanced collective opinion. Who should I believe a network of respected and known people or a half aware and ill equipped sales person who can just about use the phone let alone sell. I am not sure why the message hasn't got out yet. I expect that there will be many that will not read your letter properly or understand its meaning and defend the relevance of cold calling you. They are of course allowed, but for us it is definately a case of "dont call us, we'll call you......................... or not."
