When their antics cause problems with other team-members, I counsel exactly the reverse of your program: I describe their achievements and contributions in great detail and suggest that similar major contributions will result in similar freedom to ignore the 'rules', whatever they may be. Sure it sounds unfair and counterproductive, and it does make some people unhappy, but in the end, if you live by the star system you need to abide its built in lack of equality. What seems to happen is that very soon the effects wear off for both sides- the prima dona loses the thrill, and the others lose the will to really care, and small group peer pressure is extraordinarly hard to resist for very long. I just take the zen approach to wait out the inevitable. The real problem is when multiple prima donas start to jostle each other. The only cure then is massive distraction: until someone gets a new house, baby, or relationship, there will be some babysitting and drama to deal with. Comment on: Blog Post 'One page resumes – does size really matter?': comfortable that my opinions and methods are based on sufficient comprehension of modern employment practices and continuous research and interaction with all parties involved. Won't describe specific techniques, but I do take it upon myself to remain intimately familiar with the hands-on aspects of job searching as well. The majority 95%+ resumes I've written originated from referrals, recommendations and repeat clients. Again, I wasn't referring to to anything related to CVs - only traditional US business based resumes. That said, I've never met a resume that needed to exceed two pages, regardless of how much experience the person has. I've also had people with similar amounts of work experience as I have (plenty) or even more than that request one page resumes. In some cases that is appropriate and quite effective and in other cases, a second page makes more sense. All that really matters is that person being satisfied that the content accurately represents the career marketing message they can be proud to distribute - AND - they get invited to interviews. Obviously everyone has their own perspective and preferences on what type or length of resume "works" best. Now where's that paycheck?': r time and energy into recruiting and filling jobs...so her networking efforts are directly work related, she gets new clients as referrals from clients that she has wowed with her recruiting, and new candidates as well. I mentioned to her how much I love twitter, and the only drawback to it is that it can be a distraction, as I receive tweets with interesting links and rush to check them out. She just doesn't do that. So, my point in mentioning that is that it got me thinking about this very question a few weeks ago, and I think social networking is great, getting your name out there online, in person, twitter, however....if it doesn't cut into the time you are spending doing your job. I look at networking efforts as extra time, and have had to discipline myself not to let my networking activities cut into the dedicated hours I need to spend recruiting and developing clients. Believe me, I could easily lose a few hours a day/with twitter and the net in general, but it's not productive, so I have had to set limits, such as "if I spend two hours heads down recruiting, then I can spend ten minutes on twitter, or here." I've found that the social networking definitely pays off though, when you least expect it. I've had new clients come to me via facebook and candidates regularly via LinkedIn and Twitter. At that point the fat girl had quit rubbing, he missed the two guys rolling on each other, Grandson responded that he knew where babies came from but wasn't sure how they got there. Comment on: Blog Post 'Ugly Candidates - what is a client to do?': really doesn't matter what age, but it seems to be a bit more prevalent in middle to older candidates. You only have 10 seconds on first meeting to register an impression, be it good or bad. It takes much longer to change that impression once it is registered. Anyone going for an interview needs to be able to make the best visual impression they can. Being frumpy can give the employer the impression that the person is not able to keep up and perhaps not able to adjust to an ever changing environment. It's one thing to be over weight, which can be a distraction but can be over looked in the interview, but it is quite another issue when it comes to personal hygiene and clothing issues. You don't need plastic surgery to make sure your hair, beard, mustache, eye brows and nose hair (yes I said nose), are all trimmed and neat. I wouldn't hurt for a female candidate to have a good hair trim and color, or at least have hair in an age appropriate style. Please take a look at your eye glasses. If you haven't replaced the frames in the last 15 years, it's time to update your style. Take out peircings and try to cover up tatoos. I'm not asking candidates to go to Brooks Brothers or Nordstroms to buy an interview outfit, but please make sure your clothes are clean, pressed and fit you properly. Please don't wear athletic shoes to an interview even if it hurts you to wear a dress shoe. I could go on and on, but I'm sure you all get the picture.
