Everyone has their own Christmas traditions; mine will start on Christmas Eve when, around 4 p.m., the hustle and bustle of the day’s preparations will settle into a quiet and hushed anticipation of the evening’s celebration. My family and a few close friends will begin arriving at my house in small groups before the evening meal, which generally begins around 6. They’ll bring delicacies and cookies, candy and bags of presents. The house will be lit with myriads of fragranced candles and both fireplaces will be blazing. I’ll shush the animals (three cats and a dog) outside but they’ll scoot back in when someone opens a door to retrieve more firewood or at the first opportunity presented. This year we’ll have a rib roast with potatoes and Caesar Salad, one of my specialties. Everyone will rave about how good everything is and around 8 we’ll begin exchanging gifts. There will be a box of chocolates we pass around; recalling how as kids we would pinch out the bottoms to see what was in them. My brother will comment on my mother’s old pinched glass ornaments that survived their innards being poked out and my sister will inspect the tree decorations, recalling minute memories of our shared past Christmases. My nephew, now sixteen, will plant himself on his knees at the tree’s base and (still) excitedly pass out gifts, calling out each recipient’s name before passing the brightly wrapped box over heads, knees and elbows. A pile of paper, ribbons and bows will accumulate on the floor and furniture until someone thinks to retrieve a bag large enough to start stuffing everything into. Invariably, some small, usually light token will get swept into the bag only to be missed days later after the trash has gone out. This year, my fifteen month old granddaughter will be the center of attention. Toddling, she is all agog at the bright lights of the tree and the shiny ornaments that twinkle their reflected light. Intrigued, she stoops and pulls at the gathering boxes beneath the tree, offering me the smaller ones with a hopeful and growing expectation that I might just open one for her. (I have to admit I have.) The fun of watching her anticipation mounting is hard to describe. I can only wish this blessing for all of you someday. It will be the usual mayhem for about an hour until the last gift is passed and the tree stands with its base starkly bare. We’ll sit around and remark on the different gifts and exchange stories of glory how each was won or almost lost. I’ll look to the tree and wish silently we could back things up a couple hours once again as my siblings and theirs begin to accumulate what is now theirs and pack it all into bags for the trip home. They’ll leave with as much as they brought plus leftovers that will become part of my sister’s early afternoon meal that will go on into the evening the next day that all of us will be present at. Some of us will head for Midnight Mass – not me this year; I will head for bed with my little charge within minutes of them leaving. There will be some presents held back for her Christmas morning. In the dawn there will be another wild explosion as she tears through what Santa brought the night before. I can hardly wait. I made three placements while I was out of town. I like my bank account to have lots of zeros behind it too! Work/ Life balance means that I can go see my 89-year old mother in the nursing home for an hour or two in the afternoon. But in the evening, I conduct phone interviews and search resumes in the Internet at 2:00 a.m. I think that many people think they work too much. (Mostly those born after 1980…) They want that four-day week. They think they're being cheated by "the man". God forbid they’re asked to come in on a Saturday to finish a project or presentation. I tell my candidates (most of them Accounting/ Finance) “don’t take this job if you don’t want to work. You’ll be expected to be productive at this company.” Paul, you make a very good point that I totally agree with. The busier you are at work, the happier you are at home. The fatter my bank account gets, the more cool vacations we can take and the more toys we can buy. And Jason, I guess since I'm over forty, I would be considered part of the "older generation". Don't scoff too much, because one morning you'll wake up (and it will be a rude awakening, my dear...) and the bag boy at the grocery store will call you "sir" and the new grads will look at you as that "an older gentleman..." I do most of my work from my desktop iMac, but I have all of my work synced from that to my iPhone and iPad so that my contacts and calendar are always up to date no matter which device I use to get to them (I also use Dropbox for central access to key files and as a secondary backup strategy). During my lunch break I leave it open in the kitchen to browse news, check Facebook or LinkedIn, or keep an eye on email. My ATS runs great on the iPad (www.catsone.com) as does the LinkedIn app and a couple of specialty apps that facilitate LinkedIn searches. I don't do a lot of composing on the iPad but I bought a small Targus messenger-style bag (netbook size which is perfect for the iPad) and it holds a small Apple wireless Bluetooth keyboard if I need to pound out anything but a brief message. Like some above, I have gone on working vacations with only my iPad and it has served me well. Just moved some key deals ahead over the Thanksgiving break as a matter of fact, using my iPad and the lobby wifi of a hotel in Aruba (sorry, had to throw that in). In the evening when I'm watching TV in my office I keep the iPad nearby so I can check email w/o clawing my way out of my easy chair to get to my desk. I'm doing this from a gen 1 iPad w/3G. I also use it even more for leisure pursuits but your post seemed more interested in business uses so I've kept my experiences limited to that realm. Like Charlie said, it's what you make of it and no one can or should talk you into getting one if you don't see the value (or at least the potential) going in. Hopefully some of these responses have helped you, and even here we have only scratched the surface of this device's most basic features. There are hundreds if not thousands of specialty business apps that have been developed. Topic: What's in Your Cupboard?: s. There were lightly colored green and beautiful, just exactly what I was looking for. But I passed them by, thinking something better would come along. Well, I couldn't stop thinking about them and determined that I would purchase them on my way out, if somebody else hadn't beat me to it. I was really kicking myself for not having snagged them up already. As I made my way back to that first booth, I realized they were gone. I spent several minutes surveying the surrounding table thinking maybe I had miscalculated in which booth I had seen them. When I turned back I saw them, they had been moved closer to the seller because she was packing up to leave. I said loudly, "I'll take these." She was a bit surprised by my forthrightness and lack of bartering. Most shoppers haggle but I was in no mood; I wanted them. She wrapped them up for me and I placed them snuggly in my bag. I was thrilled that I had not missed them, that I had not arrived too late. As she was packing the glasses, the seller said, "Aren't these lovely? The lady that I got them from said she kept them packed away and never used them, she was afraid they would get broken." So they stayed packed away, never bringing any joy to their owner. She never shared them with anyone or allowed others the pleasure of drinking from them - there's just something about drinking from fine glass or crystal. I thought of a piece of crystal I have at home. A lone etched goblet that had been my grandmother's, the only one that survived to make it to me. That one piece of crystal is so much more precious to me than had I inherited a perfect set of eight; made even more valuable by the fact that my father had given it to me shortly before he passed. You better believe I use it, I don't hide it away. I love the fact that it was my grandmother's, that her loving hands had washed it, that my father had protected it to give to me, and that I am creating my own memories of this solitary goblet. When I was a young adult, I purchased some lovely dishes and antique glassware. I loved having these "fine" things and I have kept them locked away in a cupboard. I rarely used them, I didn't want them broken and felt they were too nice to use every day. Today, I took some of them down from the cupboard and washed them. I will be serving strawberry shortcake in them this evening to my children and tomorrow, perhaps jello. There's always room for jello. What are you hiding in your cupboard? I hope it isn't bare. What tools have you failed to use or forgotten about? I think it's time to break out the fine crystal and use it.
