I can safely say that if an individual finds their niche in this community, they will be able to extract value. And the reward for keeping the site from becoming spam central is the direct monetization from advertisers. 2. How to's abound: The use of RBC, including the best uses for specific subsets of recruiters, are necessary Right Now. 15,000 is too many to manage, and the fragmentation of the community only works when strong voices step up. The opportunity for the next Dennis Smith, the next Harry Joiner, the next Jason Alba, and the next Maureen Sharib is right in front of you. If you have something to offer, now is the time to do so. First-adopters have an advantage, but RBC is still young. Carving out your area of expertise by showcasing how you succeed will enhance the value of the community and your own personal brand. 3. Slouching will be ruled unconstitutional, but with global cooling starting to rear its ugly head, 90% of Canadians will find themselves wearing stocking caps indoors, and a riot will break out. Didn't want to do accounting anymore. My "career consultant" was a lot more interested in how much child support i was receiving to make sure i could pay my fee (they were all applicant paid at that point) than she was about talking to me about what my career options might be or what she could do for me. After about thirty minutes of this hoopla she asked me what i thought i wanted to do. My response was, "if i knew what i wanted to do i wouldn't be here but now that you ask, i think i want your job because i think i could do it better. She looked at me funny for a minute and said, "Let me talk to my boss, i hate this damn job, i came in here looking for an accounting job so they hired me to work the accounting desk." If you want it i think (and she actually said it) a trained monkey could do a better job than i do." In a few minutes i was interviewing with the agency owner, i was hired, i placed her in an accounting job the next week and all the monkeys were happy. As to training, i sat in on two interviews and was handed two little books. One had job orders and the other had candidates and the rest is history. Maybe one just has to be the right kind of monkey to be a recruiter. I never had the disadvantage of being mucked up with all the fancy training. All i was told was that we placed people in jobs now go do it. Pretty basic but the rest is just the way failed recruiters pay the rent in my opinion. But ya gots ta have the right kinda monkey who knows how to find the bananas, knows what a banana looks like and that not bananas are alike. Some are too green and some are too ripe. Comment on: Topic 'Is Headhunting ethical?': reeeely critical of mushy writing and thinking; with all due respect, the question is mushy. But it is interesting to ponder what tactics are ethical or appropriate or fair in recruiting. As recruiters, we’re paid to perform a service just like the people who perform executions in prisons. If you direct your life using a religious compass, and I realize a lot people do, you can’t do either job; thou shall not kill, thou shall not bear false witness, right? (BTW: Shouldn’t Christian be capitalized?) I think the question can be tightened up by asking at what point are tactics unfair or inappropriate or harmful and I believe the answer could be based on the Golden Rule (also knows as the Mom Rule, the “How would you like it if someone did that to you?” rule). Business and professional people know recruiters exist and that we make money by tempting those individuals with offers. The people who support those individuals know that too. Whole industries such as LindedIn and FaceBook and Spoke and who-knows-what-else exist to help people to make connections – and connections is our business. So telling a fib to a person in order to get information is just another tactic (in this case, out-smarting someone) used to reach a goal. Was any harm done? Don’t think so. I don’t worry about being unethical because I’ll lose my job and my credibility if I am. I do worry about being out-smarted and out-maneuvered, neither are ethical issues. Besides, the recruiting industry (ASA) and the government have standards we have to follow, or at least be aware of (right, so we can break them). Now let me be really base: Recruiters are sometimes called flesh peddlers – you know business pimps. When we’re trying to develop new business, we usually present our business credentials and one or more attractive candidates. Once we get a new client, we then become pimps for the company and try to lure likely candidates into their fold. And we get paid for that, just like Sidney Barrows Biddle, the Mayflower Madam. We’re procurers, we’re pimps. Get over it. Don’t take yourself too seriously but do take your job and your clients and your candidates very seriously because they help you put food on the table. Topic: It's About TIME: th an agency that specialized in IT. Placing engineers used to be much easier. There were actually jobs to place them in. Stan says he is taking a break from recruiting, "Waiting for the industry to come back..." While he waits, he still receives calls often from engineers looking for work, "I don't have a job, but could you use some wine?" Funny. Maybe not. Many individuals have had to diversify. I wish I was talking about an investment portfolio. What the heck is that, by the way? At one time, I might have known but a couple recessions later and I'm lucky if I can buy peanut butter. It isn't all that bad but it isn't all peaches and herb, either. Gary agrees with me. Thirty plus years in the business, three recessions later and 2008 - 09 appears to be his "Grapes of Wrath," bringing something more devastating than the dustbowls -- wild fires. The picture here was taken from his office window in downtown Pasadena. How do you prepare for crisis? Though it may seem impossible, it isn't. You have to branch out and you have to do it with intent. Purposelessness spells imminent danger. Stick-to-it-iveness and strategic forethought are necessary but desire is the trump card in this deck. A continuing desire to thrive and succeed is a requisite for survival. And if that desire is no longer there? You must know when to let go. My mother used to tell me the story of the man who had a thorn bush. He loved his thorn bush and took care of it, but the thorn bush did not love him. He would grab a hold of it and wrap his arms around it and the bush would dig its thorns deep into his flesh, scraping and jabbing. A passer-by heard him cry, witnessed the scene and urged, "Just let go." But the man only held tighter, proclaiming, "No, this my thorn bush." You have to know when to let go. Stan, the wine broker, knew when it was his time to release the pain. Gary continues to thrive and succeed for his thorn bush still blooms and painful as it was, he pruned at the right time.
