When I was working for a large vendor corporation, we were the smallest office, but the most profitable competing with the likes of NY, Chicago, Dallas and many more, 95 overall at that time.Think about this model, less is more. We had less consultants, but more profit on each, less maintenance because of that,(less staff mgmt needed and less expenses) but more responsiveness to our consultants needs (better retention), less clients, but we OWNED that account. I see our service with a client like a virus (in a nice way virus, and because we work with technical people;-), once we get in the door with a hiring manager and deliver the goods, we ask them to sponsor us to someone else either in their dept or some other area that has a need.If you don't specialize in a controller, contact one of your network people that you trust and do a split with them. Let the client know that you appreciate the opportunity, it's a little out of your wheelhouse, but you're willing to give it a go. That way you've honestly set the stage with the client with minimal skin in the game. If you deliver the candidate they hire, you are the hero and again you establish yourself in another area of that client. Eventually you might hire someone yourself for that market.I would rather be deep into 3 clients than shallow in 100. That's the model that I saw fail with many of the large vendors. When you walk into the door of your client, wouldn't it be nice if everyone recognized you versus just the department(s) you worked with. I"m not saying to walk away from your vertical but don't turn away business at your door for fear of delivery, it's all in the way you set the stage with your client that sets the expectation overall on the service provided.Think of it this way, how much time/effort did you put into building that client...once you got in the door, did you look around at your surrounding and say, "I am finally here". I've seen people get into an account, get one job and that was all that department had budgeted for that year. If you spread around the service to other depts, you won't see that problem and you will be very busy during recessions and much busier when it's not. I like looking at my desk and deciding whether I have time to take on another client or to turn them away.Another thought here - if that client has divisions, you should be like a bee moving from one flower to the next and picking up the honey from the divisions too since you've already established yourself within the umbrella of companies. Comment on: Photo 'Blood Orange Cover': , which was more than a few days ago. They were writing on parchment at the time. I knew nothing about the publishing industry, but just sat down and wrote the book. Since then it has gone through more than a few changes. Publishers went from publishing what they liked to having to first pass it to marketing, which in turn ran tests, and that was how many books were determined. Writers were given a few books to build up a readership but no more. That is mainstream publishing. But now with the plethora of small publishers and self-publishers and the fact that you don't have to publish first printing a minimum five thousand copies to work the economies of scale, it is all different. Kindle and ebooks, too, make a big difference. So now you are not only seeing mainstream, safely vetted stuff, you are seeing a lot of junk as well. But you are also seeing some remarkable work either from new writers or established writers who decided for what they wanted to do, they would take it out on their own. I mean, what the hell, with Borders closing their are fewer brick and mortar bookstores and sales are online, Amazon and such. Much of my revenue comes form eBooks. The main thing to me is don't let anyone tell you what you should be writing about. Style, craft, yes there is definite input. But content and subject, that's a bad idea. The Guys Who Spied for China is based on my own experiences working with a man who was partially responsible for the uncovering of certain Chinese Espionage networks in the U.S. I could have sold it mainstream, provided the "Me" character was the young innocent who gets in over his head, goes through a moral crisis, etc....ho hum. So I went with a smaller publisher, wrote what I wanted, and the book received some nice reviews. The other thing about the mainstream houses is that if the book doesn't shop bestseller than it goes on what is called mid-list. No table displays, etc, and it languishes for a couple of weeks before it is remaindered. Which means to the $1.99 bins it goes. They still control the rights, and you can buy cheaper copies for your friends. No fun there. Realize, given some of the subjects you bring up, the barrios, especially, most of the gatekeepers don't have a clue what that is about. So their input other than style, structure, is negligible on the best of days. Just write from you own perspective. It is in the context of literature , first person non-fiction, especially, subjects that have received little exploration. Well worth doing. That is the area that I would find the most interesting. The Blood Orange, by the way is drawn partly from old Spanish California Bandit legends. Years ago, a copy in LA, his family went back generations, described how the bandits roamed the Hollywood Hills and ventured into town, the highways, the ranchos. Interesting stuff. Especially since there are still bandits in the Hollywood Hills, but of a different stripe. At the end of the day you are other formulaic or you decided to write what you want. Tough choice and there are advantages to both. As a kid I asked Allen Ginsberg, no wilted flower, how do you hold it all together? How do you keep the emotions in control so that it appears contained and structured. He answered, "you don't. Topic: A Good Investment: to maintain a lovely lawn. While it has always mattered to me, I just haven't had the time nor energy for proper maintenance, so I have learned to delegate. About 18 months ago, I caved and hired a gardener to care for my grass and yard. He comes every other Tuesday and within twenty minutes, his team of four have run a 25-yard blitz across my lawn and through my flower beds to perk it all up and make my day happy. I don't mind paying my gardener. He is an expert and knows exactly what to do to make my yard look nice and well-cared for. There are those in my life that have said it is a waste of money and that I should be more careful with how I spend given my situation: single mom, new job, shaky market, and all. I adamantly say, "I know what I am doing. It saves me considerable aggravation to know it will be taken care of on a regular basis and that I don't have to nag or kill myself to get it done." It just gets done every other Tuesday between 8:00 and 8:30AM. The walks are swept, sprinklers are repaired, bushes are trimmed... what more could I want? Work that is done when I expect it to be. Once a month, an envelope is wedged in my front door jamb that contains an invoice that I gladly pay. I am happy to know that a simple need is met and I never mind paying for it. I am sure employers feel the same way. Imagine what it must be like to have to pay an employee or vendor that is not living up to their end of the bargain. Oh, the lawn looks nice every once in a while, when they feel like it or the debris is swept away when there isn't something better or more exciting to do. I have no problem micro-managing or being micro-managed in the beginning, if it produces results and a well-mentored employee. I also have no problem with delegating work that is better and more easily done by an expert, even if it might cost me a bit more. Employers or clients feel the same way. They want tasks completed and outcomes met. Value is always a good investment. I have been directing theater for many years and I love to build a show out of nothing; it is exciting to see it all come together. There is a term in theater called "line reading." This is when the director tells an actor exactly how to say a line by reading it or saying it out loud, the exact way the director wants it executed. The emphasis and pronunciation are definitive because it has been clearly and vocally laid out and demonstrated for the actor. There are some directors who refuse to "line read," they like their actors to find the right way by exploration or by giving them vague hints. I am not one of those directors. I will line read when I see that the actor just doesn't get it or is struggling -- just as a manager or boss should say or exhibit exactly what is needed for success, comfort, and peace of mind.
