Topic: My Future in Recruiting: lly understand where my future lies, I must come to grips with my past. Remembering and understanding my history in this continually evolving sport is imperative if I am to remain active and considered a true participant. I spent several years as a retained, executive recruiter. The client relationship development experience set the tone for how I work in this industry. I consistently refused the hard sale side of the biz because it was difficult for me to connect a dollar sign to the relationships I worked so hard to develop. I loved making those connections and being an integral part of the companies that engaged with me. I used the phrase all the time, "I am an extension of my client's HR department." I learned many hard lessons that are now embedded in my recruiting psyche. Most are good, some hold me back. Ways for me to continue developing, I suppose. I consider my time on the other side of the fence as a corporate recruiter as the single, greatest working experience of my life. I gained knowledge and experience that has rounded off corners and opened doors to which I didn't even know I had keys. Recruiters now called me. It was difficult for me to say, "My recruiting dollars pay my salary, sorry." But I said it, often. Finding myself in a third-party/contingency agency became an education on the importance of speed. I also learned the sad fact that hiring managers don't care how hard you work as long as you produce. And if you don't produce, there is a long line of others who will, so you better. The opportunity to dwell for a time in each of these worlds has created a base for my future. The recruiting industry has had to adapt to consistently changing technology. Phone, mail, Fed-Ex, fax, email, texting, tweeting. Speeds of information disbursement are "virtually" out of control. Getting caught up in the next advancement risks wisdom gained. People are more than fingers on a keyboard. I will remind you of that over and over again. That may be my future. Topic: My Future in Recruiting - Mexico: been a bit docile, passive on the client management side. My future sees me doing the following: 1. Being more direct with new clients and up front about expectations 2. Demanding and insisting on feedback from clients on candidate rejections 3. Being nicer and friendlier even to entry level candidates for roles I don't or will never have openings for 4. Using skype (does this count?) - i rigged maxire to be able to single click to dial out using skype. Quite useful. I can enlighten anyone if they want? 5. Maybe spend 3 days not on the couch, but actually upstairs in my office (i'll miss Dr. Phil) 6. I don't think I'll change my feelings about recruiting. I love running my own gig, and speaking with thought and technology leaders. 7. I want to give back more to the academic world and engage the candidates of tomorrow, today. They will remember me. 8. If i win this trip, I will definitely consider a branch office in Mexico, the DR or San Diego. 9. I also see myself learning new expressions and cuss words from McCartt. I actually thought I had heard them all, but now, knowing McCarrt, my future in recruiting also includes an expanded lexicon of swear words, thankfully. Thats my future, and my today, in recruiting. Topic: My Future In Recruiting...: the notion of jobs, building a career and work as a contribution, not a task. Your optimism sets the tone. Your enthusiasm sets the pace and your determination sets the goal. Recruiting like most things is an opportunistic venture. You have to see it to believe it. As long as there are people looking, needing, wanting an opportunity to work, there will be recruiting. Recruiters are the connectors to the future of work. Without them, you'd have aimless enthusiasts looking to find their meaning in life without the benefit of experts who can help connect them with the right people. Recruitment isn't the most altruistic of endeavors. It is a warrior's fight, particularly in these times. It's not for the faint of heart. It has it's own code of ethics. It waits for no one and it does have an agenda all its own. The future of recruitment is simple: it's about going where few will venture and where some fear the risk even greater. My future in recruitment is even simpler: it's about helping those who, for whatever reason, can't seem to help themselves. It's not philosophical. It's not biblical. Recruitment at its core is practical. Until we all find the road towards independent wealth without needing to work. we all need the help of a good, honest and assertive recruiter. Recruiters are the future. For now, there are more outlets where people can "virtually" connect without needing the help of human, live interaction. So you may wonder, "Why would anyone need a recruiter?" Because recruiters, know where the jobs are and they can help you find your way. A good recruiter in many ways is your GPS for jobs. Recruiters have competition but mainly not from other recruiters. Recruiters have competition from the unknown, the faceless names of LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. Technology is a friend but you wonder if it is for the recruiter? Our future is entwined with this faceless foe. Recruiters need to embrace the enemy in a whole new way, because quite frankly, we don't know what impact this enemy will have on the future of recruiting. So in the meantime, we watch, we learn, we wait and we count the days when we complete our next placement no matter how big, no matter how small. As long as we can say with genuine optimism, "So how was the interview, did you like the Company?" Or even better, "Hey, Human Resources just called, they want to offer you the job!"
