The last thing anyone needed today was trouble..." Just a little fiction to start off my post today. ;-) Andy Gregory posted a comment on my 400! post that made me pause to think... I really have never had writer's block. Oh sure, there have a been a few times when I have sat down in front of my computer without the foggiest idea of what I was going to write but then I just recounted my day or my week or my life and a story always seems to pop into mind, a story that can be told in a way, allowing it to be attached to a concept, practice or simple idea. It is how I write, it is actually how I thrive. One of the most simple practices I uphold, to avoid writer's block, is keeping a notepad handy. This used to be an actual notebook, one I held in my hand, that required a pen or pencil. I, typically, use only black pen - a bad habit from my early working days when my boss forbid blue pens to be used in our files. These days, however, my notepad is virtual. It is a yellow pad app in my mobile phone where I quickly jot down ideas and random experiences that are slightly unique - notes that I can return to and draw from in my daily musings. Geez, sorry - I rarely call them musings and I don't like to call them insights for that might indicate that I know what I am talking/writing about. I am learning and struggling daily, just like everyone else. But what my writing has done is allowed me to highlight areas where I have some experience, explore those where I lack and yet, always - always - always remember that tone rarely comes across in the written word. And to that end is why I try to write as conversationally as possible. I love the comma, I love italics, and well, bolding and underlining? (that was on puporse, btw) I could go on and on. The point is, I still stand behind my belief that everyone should write. We all have unique experiences that may benefit someone else. Or.., that may only benefit the writer to recount and write it all down. We are in this life to learn, why not use a handy, easy-to-use tool right in front of you to do so? And just because you write doesn't mean you have to publish or publicize your blog space for anyone else but yourself. Just give it a go. In fact one of the sales execs from Indeed.com gave it to his sales reps to source new leads. Version 2.0 is now in the app store and works with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. There's no Android version yet but the website is mobile friendly and looks great on any Android screen. Developed by CareerCloud.com, a new social recruiting startup, the app has already tracked more than 2.5 million new jobs since it launched in the spring of 2011. It aggregates online articles and news items about companies that will be adding jobs, either immediately or in the near future. Then it catalogs them by grabbing the number of jobs mentioned and the state they’ll be created in. Comment on: Blog Post 'More Than Just An Education': r community college system; both sectors are well adaped and quite successful. On the other hand, our whole liberal arts edifice and the unresolved tension between vocational training and a decent life of the mind are nothing less than a money destroying slow motion disaster, chewing up billions of dollars and years of life, with only more of the same on the endless horzion. College is not for everybody, and it ill-serves many who might otherwise benefit, were it organized and timed properly. In the days of mailed resumes and expensive assessment, the degree was a handy shorthand for basic qualifications, but today it's not needed in many cases whatsoever. If we were honest with ourselves, we would see how little value we are getting for a huge percentage of our educational investments, and we would re-tool accordingly, but for a key secondary role of college. The often unspoken truth is that the current system is effective at sorting people by social class, and we like that result, and we are supportive of its underlying logic. My guess is that if you took every occupation and broke the core KPA's down, you would find a small proportion that do really require a quality, full time college education, while the rest could be easily handled by basic vocational training- either on the job, or briefly as a stand-alone program. Try telling a guy in an interview something like this: "I did a survey of the available economic opportunities and decided that "XYZ" was most interesting. I managed to find an entry-level position in the industry, where I learned the basics of the game. I was then fortunate enough to again find a role where my new skills could be put to practical use right away, and I moved up in responsibility and accomplishment quickly, so that by age 24, I had near mastery of the role. Comment on: Blog Post 'The Millennial Recruiter Is Going To Kick Your Ass': e are so many times when I need to set up an interview with one of my recruiters on a short time frame. I run down to his office to discuss. Or when I have a client on the phone with a question that needs a fast answer. I know there are phones and e-mails but how many times do you call someone and they are away from the desk to get a cup of coffee etc. They may not notice the phone message right away and your hanging there for an answer. I also agree with Shirley about the brain storming. This happens several times a week in our office. Sharing information and getting additional opions and in put is extremely helpful. And I agree with Theresa (What I see from the younger generation does not excite me when it comes to a good strong work ethic. The dealings I have had they seem to be more easily distracted.) They are texting, downloading, e-mailing, facebooking and twittering friends when you talk to them in person, imagine how much more time would be taken up by these distractions if they didn't have to watch for the office manager as they are connecting with friends. I know a lot of recruiting is done through social media, I use it a lot too, but that can really get out of hand if not watched or allowed. It sounds like a good business practice to use the numbers as a tool to productivity, but things are not always black and white. You could be working your tail off and still have dismal numbers for a quarter or two. We do deal with people, who we all know are very unpredictable.
