The fact that he understands what a sourcer can do for his org leads me to think he may not be so green... Denyse Diem that or stressed....didn't ask me a single question! Maureen IF you can phone source you don't need any of that noise... Maureen Be careful - there are some characters surrounding us - some sharpies who understand what value we bring to the table and will try to "lure" you w/ promises... Denyse Diem so they have certain needs for certain specialties - ..yes, that's right...sorry I'm fading Maureen Oh. And pay you a small salary w benefits and then something on the if-come. I see. I have always thought many people could use sourcers. Maureen All types - usually they had gross sales up to $5-10million - occasionally higher... Denyse Diem who else uses sourcers? Denyse Diem do you prefer one to the other? Denyse Diem wow - what type of small business? Maureen When I first started- recruiters - nowadays it's pretty evenly divided. Denyse Diem so I had asked before so being so ruding interrupted...what entities yield the best jobs for you - recruiters? Hr depts? Maureen So THAT'S why my head isn't in it. I could tell some real horror stories... Maureen Me neither... Maureen I sold small businesses for 22 yrs - you think it's hard to make a placement? Try selling a busines to someone nobody will hire - that's WHO buys small businesses many times! Maureen No I only do phone banks when I have a need to penetrate a company for specific names...I don't data mine any longer though when I first started sourcing I spent many nights doing just that because I did not know what I was doing - it was a terrific learning ground for me... Denyse Diem so do you just data mine even if you don't have an immediate need for a name - during the holidays I mean? Maureen I don't want to have to develop relationships with people - the warm and fuzzy thing - I just want in and out - I enjoy the sense of completion a job started and finished in a few days gives me - placing requires months and months sometimes of sitting on pins and needles - who needs that? I'm not into any of that anymore. Denyse Diem here=hear LOL! good lord! Denyse Diem do you ever here of openings since you have good relationships with recruiters? And who are your major customers - recruiters, stand along company with an HR person needing help? WHo are the best folks to target? Denyse Diem but you were at one point? Maureen My head is not there. Denyse Diem what's your personal reason for sticking to the sourcing end? Maureen Doing placements is a whole different ball of wax...my head is not there anymore. Maureen The thing they don't get is that I DON'T WANT TO DO PLACEMENTS. Maureen I have never placed anyone. I get criticized occasionally for not doing so - people tell me I could make so much more money doing placements... Denyse Diem so you never try to place people? Just the names? Can I get an idea of how lucrative this can get as opposed to placing someone with a commission - actually, that may be a topic of discussion at some point Maureen Holidays and holiday weeks = Very valuable time! Maureen I always use holiday time to my advantage - holidays are great -for instance, many people go on vacation in a week that holds a holiday - and some of these will leave VoiceMail messages with valuable information on them when they combine one day of holiday with two weekends and four more days in the week to be away for a total of NINE DAYS with using up only FOUR vacation days! See how that works? So while they're away for those nine days they leave valuable info on their VoiceMails..."I'm on vacation - in my absence call..." You have to read through a lot of conversation to get to actual points Maureen ALOT of people feel that way abt recording themselves - and it's even worse in sound - Animal has a hard time getting people to participate ont he Animal show because most people suffer mike fright... I know this to be true because one of my best sourcers comes out of the radio business and she says it's a common fear in broadcasting school... Maureen Many people like to read these chat logs - I am thinking about changing these chats to allow only PEOPLE WHO ATTEND them to be able to experience the chat - in other words - NOT make the logs available to EVERYONE – maybe only to those who attend regularly and registered MagicMethod students. It’s just a thought at this point. I think it would really improve attendance and participation. Maureen The ning chat does that but it does not allow to create a legend - this one will tell you how many are online but I guess Jason forgot to turn that function on when he switched from the ning chat tonight...ning chat tells you WHO is online as well - but it has no legend function... I think old school recruiting may have attracted more sales types than administrivia types which what recruiting seems to suffer with today in many respects... Maureen It's a FAR DIFFERENT approach - far scarier for most people to approach someone who the likelihood is (80% or so) that they're NOT LOOKING for a job! In fact many times that's what the truly passive candidate says many times - first thing out of their mouths! Denyse Diem then the questions begin...how did you get my name, etc... Maureen Yes - Lou. Maureen Very FAR CRY from "This is so-and-so, we have an open position and we identified you hoping you might have an interest in our open position..." Maureen BUT the trend makers have taken notice - I see guys like Adler giving it alot of attention and because he gets a pretty high profile (at least on ERE) things are changing... Denyse Diem who can share - sorry long day= typos Maureen I think old school knows what it is but the last generation (last ten yrs or so) have come up relying on the boards and the Internet and because it's less "pressure" to do things on a keyboard that doesn't push back at you many have never learned the ability to work the phone like it was once necessary - make sense? John Kennedy and it may be possible that South Asian culture maybe has something along a "maintain an even strain" element to it that it is difficult for them to project that sense of urgency/panic. Maureen AND they can reveal the most amazing information! Maureen Phone banks can really teach you alot though about sourcing - they force you to THINK about ways in. John Kennedy she does get the "building on fire" sense of urgency through her voice that I understand is absolutely necessary for any part of the recruiting business ... Maureen When I first started sourcing I would spend hours and hours doing phone banks - usually I'd get up early (about 2 ) and work til they opened doing phone banks - I don’t do much of that anymore. John Kennedy and although I haven't had a chance to review an actual tape dump, based on the transcripts I would have to say ... Maureen Anyhoo- anyone have any good night time stories about sourcing? John Kennedy It sounds like, of what I have read so far, Maureen is about as "mild" as you get in the sourcing business ... Maureen John, It's hard to find articles on ERE I find - it seems sometimes search works better than others - you have most luck searching w/in a specific group - try Sourcing Techniques group first John - then ASK - use "culture" as keyword. John Kennedy Well, if I have to hazard a guess ... Maureen Try search Google, John - culture difficulty indian sourcing – use those words John Kennedy I'm almost certain it was ERE. Maybe six months ago. John Kennedy I wish I would have saved it. John Kennedy but it was very specific language he used about not being able to navigate the culture for such an endeavor... Denyse Diem JK - I would love to understand what they perceive as our 'intricacies of culture' John Kennedy Possibly ... perhaps based on many experience with outsourced customer service ... Maureen I ask that because I still see most sourcing requests (even from outside US) for sourcing out of US companies that are located within IN US. Maureen Maybe so. I've sourced Australia, China Japan India and Europe - same thing most places - the place I find difficult to source is Mexico - if you can believe it - it's hard to get people who speak English there on the phone! Denyse Diem let me rephrase Maureen - would you said you gain access to information far more readily b/c people really want to help someone from the US? John Kennedy But, yes, I need to do a better job of holding to these articles ... but there was something about an Indian company that did virtual recruiting ... John Kennedy So I can see something like that might go on when you call ... John Kennedy And I remember hear them saying, as if it was Christmas morning or some such, "It's Louise in America!" Maureen Interesting John. I'm interested to hear that. John Kennedy She called the UK frequently because some of their governing structure is there ... Maureen It' s not hard to source abroad - remember D sourcing is simple but it's NOT easy! John Kennedy Oh, yes ... I remember that phenomenon from my grandmother who used to be very active in the structure of the United Methodist Church ... Maureen That's why I wonder about what those southeast asian (Indian) companies mean...though maybe the Southeast Asian accent is more of a handicap here in the states? I dunno... Maureen When I hit the morning guard I use the evening guard's name..."Oh, has Joe left already? Maybe YOU can help me..." It helps me establish a slight familiarity immediately. John Kennedy I remember seeing a posting from an Indian recruiting company that they really couldn't do names sourcing because they couldn't navigate the culture properly ... RecruiterGuy Not much... but did just fill a comp & benefits title in the UK. John Kennedy Actually, that would bring up an interesting question ... Denyse Diem what about the rest of you - what % of your work is abroad in other time zones? Maureen Growing but still a small %. Luigi: I feel like I am very fortunate to have the home and family I do. They provide a great balance to my work life. I’m married to a wonderful wife, Christina, and have been blessed with 2 incredible children, Mia and Joseph. My oldest, Mia is 4 and a half and my youngest, Joseph, is 2. They absolutely keep us on our toes and on the move. I consider myself a media snacking news junkie and will use all means available to get my fix. Really doesn’t matter whether it’s a newspaper, magazine, newsletter, computer, TV or my phone. I still enjoy reading the newspaper but am addicted to all the snip-its of news and information on the internet. I’m an avid reader but tend to focus on business and industry related topics. My night table holds my latest group of great reads including “Talent on Demand” by Peter Cappelli, “Extreme Future” by James Canton, “The Leadership Challenge” by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner, “Big Think Strategy” by Bernd Schmitt and one of my favorites “Blink” by Malcolm Gladwell. I’m a magnet for online newsletters, reports, statistics, surveys, webinars and slide presentations. I enjoy spending quality time with my family and have recently introduced my daughter to fishing. Six Degrees: How many years have you been in the staffing industry? Luigi: I have been in the recruiting industry for 15 years now and have enjoyed every second of the ride. This industry has come a long way from when I started. I can remember my first experience with candidate generation was approving a newspaper ad by 4:00 on Thursday to run over the weekend (when the employment section was about 25 to 30 pages long) and making sure the fax had plenty of toner and paper to run over the weekend. Believe it or not, this was my biggest challenge when I started in the industry. Six Degrees: How did you get started as a recruiter? Luigi: I’ve been developing talent acquisition strategies for the last 15 years. I feel like I had found my niche from the very beginning. My first job out of college was as a personnel assistant in the HR department at the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. Within six months I was asked to work as a non-exempt recruiter and the rest is history. Although, I do remember hesitating at first and did not want to get into it – WHAT was I thinking?!? I enjoy all aspects about recruitment and labor markets and spend a lot of time on the DOL & BLS website. I have been consulting with clients for the last 10 years. Recruitment consulting has provided me the opportunity to work and understand the recruitment functions of many small, mid and large companies globally. I’ve consulted in multiple industries and at multiple levels. I’m proud of my career and feel that my experience has given me the opportunity to view recruitment from a unique perspective. Six Degrees: What single event had the most impact on your sourcing/recruiting career? Luigi: I think that would have to be my first employer and boss the VP of HR at the Philadelphia Stock exchange. I was given the opportunity to get into recruitment. My boss at the time was an inspiration and mentor to me and when I hesitated to get into recruitment said “Luigi, I know you will enjoy recruiting and you will run with this and never look back” -- She was right. Six Degrees: Worst mistake, biggest goof, lousiest practice you thought would fly but didn’t…and how that was a learning experience? Luigi: One of the mistakes I made earlier in my career was that I did not understand the value of internal consulting. I learned my lesson and better underestimated the change management aspect of the implementations and process changes and have never made that mistake again. Do you have a mentor to whom you attribute your overall outlook on recruitment, capabilities, and/or model your career after? Luigi: I have been fortunate to have worked with some amazing people throughout my career. I have had mentors and brilliant individuals coach me through out my career as well as had the opportunity to observe entrepreneurs and leading influencers in the industry. I admire the recruitment functions and recruitment leaders that seek to understand the emerging resources and technologies and can continue to evolve their recruitment functions and harmonize the process with the organization’s culture. Six Degrees: What recent general news story or industry trend do you feel will have an impact on your work in the future? Why? Luigi: I have to say that most recent controversy in Iranian elections and how we received our news information impacted by my world and my work. Basically, the country tried to cut itself off from the media and the rest of the world but streams of information and news poured out of the country on Twitter and Facebook. This event combined with every news personality now marketing both their Twitter and Facebook profiles have really had an impact on me. Times are changing - these and other emerging technologies will not only change the way we communicate but the way we recruit globally in the future. Six Degrees: Tell us about your broader involvement within the staffing industry: Luigi: I try to stay as active as possible within the recruitment community. I’m a regular blogger on various topics on recruitmentblogs.com, ERE and on Lou Adler’s wall. And I’ve been hooked on Twitter since the moment I clicked on the site. I’ve always enjoyed mentoring others through out my career as I was mentored and am an active mentor in the SHRM mentoring program as well as my employer. Most recently I have been providing free resume critique and interviewing tips in my local neighborhood and community out of a local coffee shop. Six Degrees: Can you detail how the recession has affected your particular industry niche? Luigi: I think we have all felt the impacts of the current recession and it has affected everyone regardless of the industry. I have heard of many colleagues and friends lose their job in this recession and try to help in any way I can. Six Degrees: Aside from simply the generic term “Networking” what specific efforts have you made on your own behalf, or on behalf of colleagues to broaden your opportunities. Luigi: I have always enjoyed networking. Most recently I have been connecting with recently laid-off professionals within my neighborhood and local community at a local coffee house to provide free resume critique and interviewing tips. It is a great opportunity to meet people and share experiences and expertise amongst professionals. Six Degrees: Given your own Trial and Error experiences as a Networker, what advice do you have for your peers on what NOT to do? Be specific Luigi: I think that we should all be open to networking in this market and it’s a real opportunity to build strong relationships. if I had to think of something not to do it would have to be to Not forget that networking is a two way street and professionally you can develop long lasting relationships. Six Degrees: What is your next career goal? What do you need to do to get there?
