Topic: "...and I thought I was busted!": t those of you who are interested in the subject might enjoy it. I was calling today looking for Web Analysts in media companies and I called a company in New York and a very nice young woman named Donna answered the phone but as they sometimes do, she did not identify herself. Instead, she stated the name of the company she works for and, “May I help you?” I took her cue. “I hope, so, this is Maureen Sharib – I was trying to call Jeremy Black there in your office - I hit his VoiceMail, can you tell me, is there anyone else in Jeremy’s group we might try?” “What group is he in – do you know?” she queried back. “Yes, I do, he’s in the Integrated Marketing Solutions group and he’s a Web Analyst,” I answered with the aplomb and confidence of the information I gathered from his VoiceMail (the “Integrated Marketing Solutions group” bit – I already knew his title from LinkedIn!) “Oh! I call them the SIM group,” she stated. I did not question why there was an S on the beginning of the acronym, rather than the end, recognizing the letters as standing for the words in the group name. She sounded like she was about to talk so I let her go on. “I can try someone else in the group, do you know anyone else?” she curiously asked me. “You know, I don’t – does he have an Admin?” I casually asked, trying to change the subject. “No, that group doesn’t have an Admin.” She sounded familiar with the group and I found the info that the group did not have an AA odd. “But tell you what, I can try someone else in the group for you. There’s a James Blow and a Peter Brow and a (incomprehensible foreign sounding name)... let’s try the first one, James Blow. Are you typing these names?” she asked, throwing me off-guard, surprising me and stopping my fingers. I had been – I’ve been using a normal keyboard lately since my silent one gave up the ghost – they don’t last too long and I haven’t yet ordered my next one. Apparently she could hear the fast clickety-clack of my information gathering through my headset. “Yes, I am,” I answered truthfully. (“Uh oh,” I thought, starting with the stinkin’ thinkin” I’m always warning you against – “Here we go – she’s going to ask me why...”) “Do you have James’s last name spelled correctly?” she surprised me again. “I think I do – is it B-L-O-W?” I answered. “Most assuredly not!” she exclaimed, through her laughter. Nobody gets that one right – it’s B –L –A –U. I think it’s really important to know how to say, and spell, someone’s name right!” “This is interesting,” I thought. “Someone after my own heart.” “I agree, and I’m sorry I didn’t ask and I’m very glad you corrected me!” I chimed back. “It is important to say someone’s name correctly – I know my own name often gets mispronounced – I’m not really fussy about it but I know some people are – are you?” I asked her, deflecting. “I am,” she answered. People don’t realize this, but I can recognize a lot of things on the phone...I can tell if you’re not smiling, if you’re aggravated, if you’re selling something...” “What is your name?” I boldly asked. “Donna. I never give my name out because people use it and say thing like, “Donna said, Donna said...” I laughed, knowing EXACTLY what she was talking about, but I did not let on that I understood her plight so completely. “Oh my goodness - imagine that!” is all I offered. Then she said, startlingly, “I’m glad you’re laughing because at first you sounded very serious...serious but polite, you told me your name right away – I appreciated that,” she remarked, “I know what you’re doing so it’s okay...” “She knows what I’m doing?” I thought to myself. I hope not. She’s not THIS good, I hoped. I was beginning to see writing on the wall in front of me. I was uneasy and decided the best thing to do in this situation was to remain silent. She then went on, filling the silence, to tell me, “I’ll go ahead and transfer you to James now, I’ll stay on the line to be sure he answers,” to which, I acknowledged, “Thank you so much, Donna,” wondering how much she really did know. James’s line of course went to VoiceMail and thinking she was still on I said, “Donna?” She didn’t answer so I knew she had not stayed on the line with me so I zeroed out back to her. She answered. “Donna, it’s me, Maureen, again – I got James’s Voicemail too!” I told her, with a slight hint of complaint. “Who else did you say was in that department?” I asked, like I didn’t already have the other name I heard when she recited them off in the beginning. “Sorry! I didn’t stay on with you – my other line rang and I had to answer that,” she offered in way of an apology, like there was one needed. “That’s okay, Donna,” I soothed. “Can we try someone else?” “Sure, the next one on the list is Peter Brow – you know how to spell that?” she asked, testing me. I could tell she took her job seriously. “I give up! I’m not even going to attempt to try!” I teased back, breaking into a laugh. “B-R-A-U,” she informed. “Well, I wouldn’t have gotten THAT one right – that’s for sure!” I exclaimed, affirming her worth in the process. “Can we try him?” “Sure – hang on,” and off I go to another VoiceMail, to which once again I listen for any clues to the keys to the kingdom. I zero back again. “No good?” Donna asks, not even skipping a beat. “No,” trying to sound as forlorn as possible. “Allrighty then, let me just try Ellen...” The line goes silent as she swifts me to another VoiceMail and when I arrive back, once again, she offers, “I’m just going to go down the line, ok, hold on...let’s try Samantha...” and she sends me to Samantha. Samantha answered, and Samantha, being one of the group, was able to detail for me what everyone’s title was and also informed me that Jeremy was the ONLY Web Analyst in the group. My job here was done. But this experience was different for me because it gave me a view into a real Gatekeeper’s psyche. She had strong beliefs about how communication should work and took pains to see that the process was well-oiled and functional in her organization. She affirmed for me many things I have held dear in my own process and she also demonstrated, once again, that things may not always be what you think they are. It’s best, when you’re thrown off your footing, to go quiet and watch what emerges. Topic: Dave Mendoza Reveals "The Dark Side of RecruiterEarth: When Funny Is Actually Spite": tory behind its formulation and its intent is anything but funny. I waited a couple of days to let this this situation and its implications 'sink in' to properly address all the issues involved. Today I will make an attempt to remove any ambiguity on where I stand on the video, its creators, Chris Lavois - a public figure in our industry. It started as a 'gag reel' to loosen up for a more serious video about an entirely different topic matter. I requested, and I was promised, - without any ambiguity - that this video would not be produced nor aired at any time. In emails to date, this has been confirmed by Chris LaVoie, a Recruite earth Co-Founder, that he fully understood that it was never my intent to have this video shared with the general public. You may be asking yourself why it matters, "It was funny Dave, why the issue?" The video you may have seen was originally taped in November at Kennedy Expo four months ago. I was given no expectation that the material would be aired, I was not informed of the video by Recruiter Earth, nor did the video even give credit to RecruitingBlogs.com nor Jason Davis. Above all, I want to inform Recruiter Earth's membership that the video you saw was edited entirely out of context, of which none of this material should have been on aired. Chris LaVoie and Recruiter Earth never had legal rights to make it available to the public and overall it wasn't a funny situation. Overall it was an abuse of trust. The video was made to look like a comedy at the expense of my friend Jason Davis and though it is a funny Video, RecruiterEarth's intent was not meant for comedy and I'll explain why. Let me give you a bit of background on the process that led to this seemingly, lighthearted video: This past September, Recruitfest, Toronto, was produced by Recruitingblogs.com and a cocktail party was hosted at the home of Jason Davis. Being one to enjoy "Where are they now" Baby pics I took a photo as a prank on my friend, Jason Davis, on my iphone of a picture frame. A month later on Halloween when Jason asked me who I was pretending to be for the holiday, I told him I was going as "him" - he was puzzled but a few hours later I used the little boy picture as my own profile photo for the day. The initial intent on my part was that of an innocent prank, a shenanigan, - but It was poorly executed and the impact was something I could not have expected 4 months later and has been a matter of personal regret. As a partner of RecruitingBlogs.com, I know first hand that decisions to ban members are never easy. Over the last several months Chris LaVoie has been an active participant on RecruitingBlogs.com but instead of being active by adding content and participating in the ongoing conversations about recruiting, Chris would use RecruitingBlogs.com in order to promote RecruiterEarth in a way we like to call 'Predatorial' networking. His behavior was that of someone whose sole purpose was to attract RecruitingBlogs.com membership to his own, with the intention of selling products to them. You see I am the first to tell you that Recruiter Earth is slick, just like its leadership. The word "slick" is defined by Webster's dictionary, however, as "deftly executed and having surface appeal or sophistication, but shallow or glib in content; polished but superficial." The look and feel is that of a Vodka ad in GQ magazine - and it feels that way because it is indeed utilizing its membership information to continually promote its Red and Black book of passive candidates, among other products. We at RecruitingBlogs.com spent at least two months determining whether to ban Chris Lavoie from RecruitingBlogs.com, and once he was banned - he shot back at jason by banning JD AND then manipulating my gag reel - with Recruiter Earth going out of their way to make it look like it was through my own consent. It is no coincidence, that four months after that video was shot that it would appear without warning or notification just as he was being banned himself from RecruitingBlogs.com. The video was produced to spite Jason Davis, myself and RecruitingBlogs.com because he was removed by our community for his lack of respect. The timeline and the lack of consent is consistent with this conclusion. The fact that Chris LaVoie continued to air the video after informing me he would remove it merely confirms this understanding. As much as i would like to take credit for being funny, this was a concerted effort to have as many people see this as possible and completely taken out of context. The more I learned about the timeline of actions leading up to the video being posted, the more I understood it was no coincidence. It was Chris LaVoie's way of giving a middle finger to RecruitingBlogs.com after he was banned. I am absolutely appalled. I always found Chris to be a personable sort of guy, the kind you can crack a joke with down the hall of a conference, but interestingly enough Chris was always fond of closing a conversation with "Let me know when you're ready to join the "Dark Side." I certainly saw the site's underbelly this past weekend and over the last several months hitting our membership to join his own site. What is more interesting is that Chris repeated this refrain right as I was about to hang up the phone telling him to take the video down. It speaks volumes that Chris would view himself and Recruiter Earth in this manner. It is easy to contrast the healthy ecosystem as reflected by Recruitingblogs.com - a community whose membership can be secure without fear that their private membership data will not be sold to vendors, and whose leadership works to benefit its membership with transparency and worthy, user generated content without the hollywood glitz. This description is decidedly contrary to that of Recruiter Earth, whose membership is availed to vendors, a constant stream of vendor related spam, and whose leadership can often be found lurking from profile to profile promoting a competing site and its products and spamming its membershp via email. It is a depiction Chris LaVoie thinks is funny, or perhaps a freudrian slip of the tongue of how he views his practices as compared with that of our own at RecruitingBlogs.com. It is not, however, how Jason Davis and I do business nor do we find such juvenile responses to being banned humorous, pitting one friend against the other to show spite. When the goal is to sell people things rather than to build community, I agree with Chris, it is the 'Dark Side' of the industry and it is what we are trying to Change - not continue to propagate as the image of an industry we want people to take pride in. Sometimes what seems funny turns out wrong, but it becomes unethical when the sole intent is to manipulate it as an instrument of spite. PS: As soon as I posted my response to the Video on RecruiterEarth Chris Lavois banned me as a member of RecruiterEarth within 5 minutes, then he banned Maureen, I assume Jerry Albright - Oh Well lol - really Chris be an adult. There are so many simple solution, like for example, taking the video down you have no signed release for nor stated permission otherwise - and apologizing. Escalation is pointless especially against individuals not even involved because they shared opinions on the matter. Chris Lavoie - I would appreciate it if you apologized. It seems to be a sensitive subject on both sides but I'm probably debating a losing battle. You really hit the nail on the head for ME. One of those aha moments. Enthusiasm and belief in ones product or service is so very important, especially now in this economy. I know this, but, being reminded certainly does not hurt. Maybe I've just become less optimisitc and that's what people are hearing from me. I really need to think about my message and how I am being perceived, regardless of the fact that I really do believe my company provides value add! (Perception is Reality). I've been in sales for over 20 years personally, but I have only been in this particular business for approximately 4 years. I love it believe it or not, but, even in my first year of recruiting and being an absolute novice I never saw the lack of response as I do now. I guess that's where my frustration lies. I in no way intended this subject to turn into a pity party for Jill I just wanted to make my point hoping it would at least resonate for people who are on the side of the desk making hiring decisions or the decision on who to respond too and who not too. Bob really took the training literally, and committed to memory the opening phrase, “Hi my name is Bob I’m an executive recruiter I take it you know what I mean.” Well, we all worked off of paper company lists at the time, and you simply were “dialing for dollars”, not paying too much attention to who, what and where. Bob is on his umpteenth call of the day, and about twelve of us in the “recruiting bullpen” were making calls, and hated hearing Bob and his inane rendition of, “Hi my name is Bob I’m an executive recruiter I take it you know what I mean.” Finally, Bob get’s the next potential client or candidate on the phone, and he starts his pitch when all of a sudden we hear him say, “Hi my name is Bob I’m an executive recruiter I TAKE IT I KNOW WHAT I MEAN”. Jill, I’ve laughed a lot during my years in this business, but maybe never harder than hearing Bob utter that one phrase. Imagine the thoughts going on in the mind of the person listening to that pitch.It is amazing with this training I ever survived in the business. On and on, evolving and evolving we’ve trekked. Always trying to professionalize our approach, and gain entre' to the next great client, or superstar “Operations Manager”.I find myself having morphed from newbie/novice salesman, agency proprietor, to seasoned showman/schmoozer. A day does not go by where I’m not formulating a strategy of how to break into an account. How can I reinvigorate enthusiasm with a long standing client company that’s been hit hard by the economic downturn?No one returns my calls, where has professionalism gone was the salesman’s lament in 1986; it is still a challenge to overcome today in 2009. The biggest difference is that the snub can emanate from so many different forms of media. Our email can be ignored, our voicemail can be ignored, our text can be ignored, and the greatest indignity of all, our Tweet can be ignored…I posted a blog on April 23rd. titled “I just want someone to call me” http://www.allowmetointroducemyself.com/blog/ from the 100’s of candidate calls I receive and their pleas for help in connecting with a potential hiring authority or recruiter that can offer them some hope.Man, I don’t want to be preaching, (particularly to this choir), but many of us face the same challenge as the candidate(s) wanting audience with a hiring manager. Reinvent, or as our President sold us, “change”… and so I shall.I’ve reinvented my recruiting model for the fourth time in 23 years. This incarnation is the most drastic, innovative, and circular in design. I’ve tried to consider the most glaring needs of the client, candidate, and recruiter. This new model gives me reason, and purpose to reach out to 23 years of connections. I won’t be sending a single postcard, letter or facsimile.There’ll be links to PowerPoint presentations stored online. Announcements throughout the Social Networking community, and yes, old fashion phone calls to my most valued accounts. As a maniacal Class A lunatic, the 10% not responding still drives me nuts.
