Comment on: Blog Post 'The Perfect Recruitment Culture': in HR and recruiting for a lot of years, so I've used them all. They are the very best, customer service included. Their morale seems fine to me. They also understand that they have to meet the numbers to keep their jobs. As do their team members. Most large and mid-size staffing agencies are about meeting metrics in order to run your business. If you don't like that type of environment, then don't work there. If you're morale is down, then go into social work. I work for an internet retailer and a lot of our employees complain that the communication is always about sales and driving sales and say it brings their morale down. Okay..........I'm sorry but we're a freaking retailer. It's about being as good as yesterdays numbers. If you don't like it, again..........go into social work. I'm really tired hearing about employees morale and what it takes to make them happy (recent company survey asked for beer on Friday's!). Really? That's going to help your morale? Go to a bar after work and drink your beer there. Not going to happen here. Perhaps it's generational on my part, but until all of us baby boomers are completely out of the work force and you youngsters truly take over, you're not going to get beer on Friday's and it's always going to be about metrics, and budgets, and meeting those metrics so the budgets don't get cut, so when we finally decide to give you beer on Friday's, we can actually afford it. I came out of the buying/merchant arena prior to my illustrious career in HR (tongue in cheek!), and started out 3 decades ago. How did I keep my job as a buyer? By making my numbers. If they were crap, then my butt was on the line. Was it pressure? Sure it was. But did it make me tough and realistic about what may come next and how to deal with it? Sure it did. Topic: Digging Into RecruitingBlogs.com v1.22: own to Bodhgaya, back to a more cosmopolitan Delhi and ultimately to Dharamshala. Whew. Grass huts and cell phones. Extreme poverty and extreme wealth. Demonstrated diversity everywhere you look. Prudishness and a lack of privacy. Televisions in every hut and roads that require SUVs. Wide eyed westerners seeking salvation and angry young Islamic men resenting them. Vast spiritual riches and deep dark material deficits. Monkeys and eagles and parakeets. Every imaginable space occupied by a small merchant. A temple on every street corner. The place defies my desire to classify and categorize it. At 6’4”, I positively tower over everyone I meet. I catch young children staring at the white pony tailed giant. I am told that people walk by me then turn around to look and to be sure that they really saw the unusual man. I have never been further away from my work than I am now. This must be what people mean by “vacation”. I never really took very many of them. I can feel the change in perspective growing inside of me. I have little idea what it is or what ot will mean. Simply being here is harder than I ever would have guessed. I planned to write regularly. Instead, I took 16 hour bus rides through bandit country on bumpy roads. One night, the bus got stuck in a medieval city whose streets were to narrow to turn. Another day, we took land rovers to a holy site because the bridge was broken and we had to drive across the river bed. I drank tea in a café that had so many flies that I had to brush them away to sit the cup down. The patrons gawked openly. I am as strange to the place as it is to me. The next afternoon, I was in a very cosmopolitan city drinking a double espresso, passing shop windows of Rolexes. Meanwhile, the western financial system seems to be melting down. Out of my normal information rich environment, it is very hard to tell what is happening. I went nearly a week without any digital capacity. Topic: Understand the What-For: s in technology, physical changes, however, are little more difficult for me to manage. As in the oft-dreaded office move, can I just scream: Aghhhhh !!! While the reason for the move (company growth) is very exciting, the actual, tedious task has become a bit of a nightmare. The bruises on my shins and the sore muscles prove I have been an active participant. Dealing with construction issues, landlord communications, security updates, phone/internet problems can easily stack up and create a lovely little patch of heartburn or thumping headache. Updating websites and profiles with new contact information, creating new business cards, ordering more furniture, selecting new software and other programs, visits to hardware stores, managing credit card companies and merchant services – if it sounds like I am complaining, I’m really not. One incident that hit me where it hurt most was the day and a half failure of our internet connection. Ouch! I was thanking God for my iPhone. I am simply coming to the conclusion that conducting normal business is next to impossible during a time of total upheaval. Not completely impossible but right next door to it… Thankfully, the work is still coming in and 2010 continues to shine a bit brighter. Ultimately, we all face times where outside distractions or influences that can get in the way of business development or the actual conducting of business. It becomes counter-productive to allow these distractions too much control and change how you would react or perform. Staying connected, being openly communicative, and being willing to try things in an unfamiliar way may actually benefit you and your organization. Downsizing, re-alignment of personal or company goals, changing locations, upsizing, going in-house, going out on your own, trying something new. As soon as you gain an understanding of the what-for, how you handle it moves to a whole other level. It is good to remind myself of this often.
