Comment for: Tim Craig: nates as a need for a capability, the likelihood for success increases if the applicant can demonstrate transferable excellence in that capability. Consider this example: a senior leader in the corporate world decides she needs an EVP for Business Development. She can describe that capability as a collection of observable behaviors that define excellence in business development--in any business. Even if the titles change, business development is business development--even if the "business" is a university. And so, a very capable Director of Alumni Affairs, Dean of Admissions, President or Chancellor (whose primary job is raising money) has such a set of transferable skills. You'll notice the people who are most likely to make the transition come not from the faculty (professors), but from the university staff. The faculty has fewer opportunities, but isn't left entirely in out in the cold. Every post-secondary school in the US has a tri-partite mission: teach, research, and serve. The mixture varies with the school. If I have a full professor who has extended his expertise to working with the community (the "serve" part of the mission) or done some pioneering research, there may be a need for such skills outside academia. Typically those jobs fall into R&D (research and development), think tank, Chief Learning or Chief Knowledge Officer positions. In summary, an academic who can convince a hiring decision maker that he can make the company money that it costs to hire him will be hired. The key to making that argument is based on demonstrating not what he has done, but how his accomplishments demonstrate his ability to bring value to the next employer. He must also demonstrate that contrary to conventional wisdom, schools do operate just as business do--developing markets, selling "products," building customer relationships. Does that help? Comment on: Blog Post 'It's up to US - the RBC Community - to bring back the discussions here': savvy members have been very successful in using to help in all areas of brand awareness. While we have always respected and invited content publishers to include a link back to their own blog (or own site), there have been indeed select few that have really taken advantage of this. This is nothing new. Look in the archives (pick any random date) and you will find a mixture of great discussion and marketing fluff. To your point- there have been long stretches where the discussion easily drowned out the fluff. While behind the scenes we constantly monitor and remove blatant advertising materials, there are some posts that walk the fine line. We value being an open forum, but certainly understand where you (and other long time RBC members) are coming from. We are working on a solution that might address this, but keep in mind that many members have contacted us to express the fact that they like the wealth of content covering all topics (Yes...even the fluff). In the end - it does come back to a degree on the community to really fuel the discussion and keep things on point. I'm sorry to hear you retired the 'Nice Ad' pic. I must admit I have always enjoyed it, but at the same time cringe when I see it needs to be used. As always I appreciate your input and openness in starting this thread and look forward to others weighing in. We are always open to suggestions and like I mentioned earlier are working on a few things that I feel will address this situation in the near future. Comment on: Topic 'Reference Checking for the Senior Excecutives': for the client to complete. We approach it in a way that allows us to take down notes from what the referee is telling us, and sending a copy of these to the referee for him/her to approve by way of email, or signature. This way of working feels less formal, and enables us to also build rapport with a new client contact. By taking down the notes from the information they give us, it saves them the time and hassle of completing a formal type letter. A mixture of some example questions I would include are: Let’s use the name Bill to make these examples easier reading. How would you describe Bills institutional, and personnel leadership skills? Please describe the candidate’s political acumen and ability to work with senior leadership? Bill would have come up against some stressful situations; how did he react, and handle situations in such times? Additionally, how was Bill when having to deal with difficult people? What is his/her conflict resolution protocol? From your observation having worked with Bill, would you describe him as an implementer or initiator of projects and proposals? I’ve been dealing with Bill for a very short while, but come to know him quite well within this short space of time. Would you say he deals with situations and others in a tactful manner? Bill spoke very highly of your organisation, what were Bills key accomplishments or impact on the organisation? If you could give Bill any advice by way of areas of development, what would you say to Bill? For my own personal benefit, what advice can you give me on how to best I should guide Bill?
