I'm all for referrals but is technology needed to make that work? No. Is $ required? No. Give me something useful and I will put it in place. Comment on: Group 'Recruiting Humor': of "HIRING MANAGER". I saw all that as really, and subtly funny, but when I first read the comment, I had a secondary reaction based on a past experience related to why some people actually would be attracted to such an employer as depicted in the cartoon funny you posted. It reminded me of a happenstance that actually makes the observation a good reason, among others, to be impressed with an employer. Case in point, I knew of a candidate who had accepted a job prior to graduating with a Ph.D in genetics. A start date was set and all was right with the world. Long story short--the offer had to be yanked and the employer did something that flabbergasted me...to this day. They sent the candidate a letter withdrawing the job offer with a brief explanation why with apologies. Also included in the letter was a check for a half-year's salary at the monthly rate quoted in the offer letter. The candidate was dumbfounded (as was I). She sent a letter explaining her understanding of the situation and underscored her great appreciation for generosity displayed in the monetary gesture that certainly was not expected. She wished the company well and invited the employer to certainly reconsider her should the need arise in the future. My guess is that candidate's story is out there in the closely connected world of genetic researchers at the Ph.D level. It somehow inspired this cartoonist that any employer who has the capacity to treat a person who has not worked one day on the premises with such a severance package (in this case cash settlement)—that is an employer worth admiring and pursuing for career opportunities.
