If you are treating me the same as anyone else, then two of us will be happy doing business together and you are in the 70%. I'd ask to to run this blog by few Asians you know born and raised in Canada or the US. I think they'd tell you 1& 5 come up too frequently. For #1, people don't ask this because they are trying to exclude me from being a real 'merican, but they don't even realize this is a question they'd never a white person and what it implies. #2-#4 were tongue-in-cheek, but #3 in particular is important. This may be country specific, but in the US, school are funded on the local level. That means in Texas, if you live in the wealthly Highland Park neighborhood of Dallas, your kids will have an education that will feed them into the Ivies. A kid graduating at the top of his class an hour south in Corsicana, Texas in a less well funded school would has virtually no chance of being admitted to an Ivy League school. Aside from that, if you are treating every colleague the same, I applaud you but I have found this not to be the case enough times to put it on a public blog. I appreciate your feedback. If it's going to the interview, you'd better look like you'll fit in. The fast paced start up doesn't want someone with an outdated suit. Who wears matching suits anymore? Pay attention and go shopping. Find someone that you admire in your age category, or ask your kid to help you look cool but "age appropriate". Don't brag about all your education and experience. What can you do for them NOW? Get to work! Volunteer at the dog shelter. Coordinate care for a vulnerable adult. Become the neighborhood dog walker. Get a job at Starbucks, McDonald's or Target. Be there. Be in the world. Work out. Get a personal trainer. And if you are too depressed, find a good therapist. People want to hire engaged, energetic, adaptable, self correcting, competent employees who learn fast and don't create drama. Fitting in is about not standing out. If your gray hair makes you look old, color it. If your eyeglasses are out of date, get new ones. Maybe these things aren't fair, but as Charlie said, no one would not let Eric Clapton play with them. Comment on: Blog Post 'My First Job(s)': around the block. MY first job was working for my Grandfather's general contracting company. It was not easy at all, but it was my summer job for two years growing up. The labor was of course was hard (asphalt in July?), but what made things a bit more difficult was my Grandfather himself. He was the bravest and strongest man I ever knew, but also a thick headed cowboy with a trucker's mouth. He worked on a backhoe till he was 87 to give you an idea. I share this because I received no special treatment from him. I was one of the workers on the crew and as a result he treated me as such. That meant getting yelled at and sweared at, but in looking back it was such a positive experience. How you might ask? Well because my first job presented me with my first difficult boss. My take was that if I can deal with my 'Pop' I can deal with anyone. So fast forward a couple years and I began working at this summer camp and all of my friends were scared to death of the manager. He did rule with an iron fist, but to me it was nothing. The same can be said for all of my bosses/managers that followed. All of them paled in comparison to my Grandfather.
