Topic: Third Party Thursday - Google Results – Real or Not?: , more can often be downright misleading. What many people don’t realize is that Google, regardless of the results count you see, returns something in the neighborhood of 1000 results. Here is how to check this. First, go into Google Preferences and make sure you have Number of Results set to 100. Then, run any search and get over 1000 results. Then go to the bottom of the page and you will notice page numbers 1 - 10. Click on page 10 and you will see there is no Next button any more because the engine only returns the first 1000. Another indicator is the result count. Whenever you see Results 1 - 100 of about x,xxx that is your cue to work on your string. It is the word "about" that lets you know. Whenever you have more than 1000 you need to add skills, title, industry, and geography keywords to get those results way down. A rule of thumb is getting results down is to use AND components to your string. Keep adding keywords until you get those results less than 1000 because it is not until that point that you actually know what you are dealing with. A better number of results to shoot for is somewhere in the 100-200 hit range. This is a number that most of us can get through in a sourcing session. The good thing is that as you add keywords and the results decrease, the results that remain are better matches for your assignment. If Shally Steckerl were a calendar, every month would be named Shallytober, and every day he'd find more resumes better than you. Fear of not finding enough qualified candidates is not the only emotion Shally Steckerl can smell. He can also detect hope, as in "I hope my company doesn’t hire Shally Steckerl to replace my entire sourcing team." Behind every successful man, there is a woman. Behind every fired sourcer, there is a grinning Shally Steckerl. What's known as the CIR, or Certified Internet Recruiter, doesn't use its full name, which happens to be "Certified Internet Recruiter, Non-Shally-Steckerl-Trained". There is endless debate among astronomers about the existence of the life on other planets in the Universe. Well it does exist because Shally Steckerl wrote a Boolean search and found it. Shally Steckerl doesn't daydream. He's too busy giving HR people at other companies nightmares from finding their employees' resumes online. When Shally Steckerl was a child, he was banned by all the parents in his neighborhood from playing hide-and-seek because their kids always came home from the game crying, "He always knows where we're hiding!" ERE did not hold it’s first international conference in Europe until 2005 because until then Shally Steckerl was sourcing for all companies in Europe; why have a conference if recruiters would have no opportunity to practice what they just learned? Shally Steckerl doesn't use a keyboard; he stares at it until the keyboard types in the Boolean that Shally wants. They should be tolerated only in desperate times when a company on their own can't find their talent( for lack of recruiting abilities themselves) Such arrogance! It reminds me of a HR employee at a client where I had placed 5 people. I was going to be in the neighborhood and offered to take the HR person to lunch. This person said- and I will never forget the line: "oh , Ellen, I never meet with agencies". I was new to the business and devastated. I even cried when I got off the phone. But this made me wake up to the reality: there are good HR people and good recruiters, just as there are rotten apples on both sides. I went to that client and met with the hiring managers. The HR woman was there in her office and did not even come out to shake my hand! Oh well. Recruiters are not doing evil just because they are sourcing from a company, until said company is a client.Once a company is a client everything changes. In fact, I placed so many people at one small startup( 14) that even though I haven't recruited for them in 10 years, I still to this day do not raid from them. I made enough from them and they treated me well. I like them. I won't ever steal their people. I agree with others that is seems ethically wrong to be taking submissions of candidates that are employed at your paying clients. Call it what you will but you are doing worse than simply poaching from a non-client company, as recruiters do. But I won't try to change your mind. I know this can't be done. Been there, done that.
