My Eagle Scout with the big GPA, several mission trips a new cute little wife and dandy references got canned three weeks after he was hired for logging about 54 hours on porn sites at the office. Not implying that yours has a problem but i learned the uh, hard way that all that glitters is not always gold. If there is an Eagle Scout with a raging case of porncreep i would of course find him and move him half way across the country. At least until after the offer stage when the client called me and asked me if I had googled his name....while on the phone I said "oh no..." and did some fast typing. He had a photography business.... of a very specific nature. There were things on that site that made me blush and that is not an easy thing to do. I think my client was blushing too but he just kept clicking the pics in amazement and perhaps more than a little curiosity. I called the candidiate and explained to the Persian Prince of Porn that he would have had his dream job except he was doing his hobby/side business under his own name. The firm I was with at the time had an Owner/Manager who did not work a desk anymore. He did not believe, in 2008, that Commercial Construction, in my territory - the Upper MidWest - was dying a painful death and NOBODY needed, or wanted, to talk to their beloved recruiters. Except guys getting laid-off. He said we weren't trying hard enough. So after 300 calls which resulted in no activity - I decided to leave and start my own firm. I had to broaden my geographic in order to survive, and could not do that in a firm. I have never looked back and was joined by a former co-worker and we have thrived. Best decision ever made!! By the way - he went out of business and you know he never picked up a phone to try and save his company. He wanted to shake us like piggy banks and watch the money fall out. (There's a great interview with Grier on NPR A wealthy white man, played by Richard Thomas, is accused of raping a black woman. He seeks legal representation at a law firm run by two partners — a white lawyer played by James Spader and a black lawyer played by Grier. All of the characters test audience assumptions about racial allegiance and gender politics. Grier says he thinks Mamet was prompted to write the play by the election of Barack Obama. I think prejudice is alive and well here in the US and in most of the developed world. There is bias against age, race, gender, sexual orientation. There's a bias against tattoos and body piercings. The glass ceiling is still with us as well as the gray ceiling. (I could dye my hair, but no one is going to think I'm 30 years old). I commend Carmen for her belief in authenticity. At some point, you're going to have to show up for an interview. I think you should show up as yourself. As an original. I do believe, as we move into the next decade, companies TRULY wanting to embrace and promote diversity will win. Which brought the wrath of my grandfather down on my nine year old head and made me very aware of how long it takes to scrub black paint off a white horse. Thinking he was doing something fun on my birthday one year in early nineties, my friend came in my office accompanied by a crusty old man carrying a bull whip and introduced me to Lash. It was not a pretty picture. It was four in the afternoon and Lash was loaded to the gills. My friend, a non drinker, decided that what we needed to do was take old Lash to dinner and sober him up. A noble plan but one that hardly ever works. To make a long and painful story short. Lash consumed about 12 drinks of straight something on the rocks, passed out in his plate after regaling everyone within hearing distance of a foghorn all about his eleven marriages and his fall from grace in the movie industry. My childhood hero was destroyed before my eyes. My friend is still apologizing to me. It may have been smoking that caused the emphysema that finished old Lash off but i can testify that a crashing addiction to the demon rum probably had a lot to do with the organism shutting down. If he was as pickled when they cremated him as he was the day my friend brought my childhood hero into my office the cremation would have been a flash fire.
