Check on horses since some idiot left the gate open at the far end of the pasture and i got to dash to the country, lead seven horses 3 miles back to their own barn this morning across a big rough pasture with a bull in it. I have a healthy respect for bulls, horses are curious about bulls. Dumb bastards. Almost got us all killed or at least run over. Pick up band aids for blisters due to grabbing a pair of rubber boots and no socks due to being scared to death that seven horses were standing in the middle of I-40. Thank god cowboys get up early and happened to notice that 7 horses escaped to look for cigars and chase chicks all night. Cowboys know who owns livestock and who horses belong to and how to call me. Check in on RBC Consider going into retail or something - Naw not until they pay 20 a week will just continue jerking around on Linkedin, job sites and social sites and making a super effort to place people who are unemployed and scared to death. "LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Google+" You'll forgive me when I suggest a "Talent Management: HR, Recruiting & Organization Development" person who cannot recruit without the phenomenon of the Internet and who lacks focus could find oneself in a pinch if ever your computer were to decide to run away and join the circus. A 'recruiter' was at one time generally considered to be someone who can source candidates using the telephone. This was way back before you were putting milk in your cereal. Then Employment Agency staff began calling themselves 'recruiters' when in fact they were/are [?] no such thing. Now we have Internet 'detectives' who live off the yield of search engines in their various forms and faces who consider themselves 'recruiters'. I am not picking on you, just making some observations. Now, after your either ten or fourteen years of experience (are you sure you don't know which it is?) I'm guessing you must be reasonably successful in bringing in a pay check. Whether you call yourself "Talent Management" or another 'recruiter' is of no consequence to me but I would like to offer that you would be even more -measurably- effective if you would quit reading junk email and then posting about the details of how you spend your day here. Everything you described, above, is old news. The only thing anyone can learn from your post here is to be more rigorous in time management. Topic: Guess What? I Don't Have a Golden Lasso: two women, marries them both and then proceeds to create two totally separate lives for himself by setting up two households on the opposite sides of town. The story moves from one crazy scene to the next, every time John seemingly getting away with his continual cover-up. Of course, it comes crashing down in the final scenes when the two wives unwittingly find out about each other. It is comedy at its finest. I have often thought about this show over the years as I have juggled two or three jobs at a time. When I first joined the recruiting industry, I was also the athletic coach for girls' sports at my local junior high, as well as still keeping a part-time job in the dental field. Three jobs and five classes at the local college - oh..., and dare I forget -> single mom to four children. About six months into this crazy schedule, the managing director at the search firm where I worked pulled me aside and said, "Please quit your other jobs, I need you here full-time. I will pay you a decent salary and the craziness in your life will ease up somewhat." I thought about it for about two minutes then became very excited at the prospect of a simpler life (still waiting for that to happen, ha!). Then because I had been with my dentist for thirteen years, I carefully planned out my resignation for a few months later when a seasonal rush would be over. Believe it or not, dentists do have crazy, rush seasons - the summer months and the entire month of December. Parents never want to take their kids out of school to visit the dentist. One would think that after this, I would have learned my lesson, no such luck. I have consistently had more than one job for many years - that is, until recently. I coached my final season of volleyball last fall. It was a tough decision but the right one. I also closed out my last consulting client in February and I am seriously a one-company woman now. Spreading oneself too thin can result in half-produced results and half-headed focus with a heaping helping of half-hearted devotion. The most important thing for me was to recognize my worth. I don't know about you but this will be a lifelong process for me. It is very difficult for me to say "no" mostly because I don't want to; I like saying "yes." It just feels good to me. Weights and measures remind me that I don't really have a golden lasso or bullet-deflecting wristbands. I am just a mom that loves to work and needs to write. Find another industry, there are companies out there begging for help who do not have internal recruiters. Technology is utilitzed by outside recruiters the same way the internal kids use it and a lot of the time better. YOu are working defeated before you start which is why this clap trap appeals to you. It's reinforcing your defeat and convincing you that it's impossible to make placements. It's not. There have been times when there were so many jobs that clients would pay a fee for a warm body who could walk and carry a pencil. There were times before when there flat weren't many jobs. Nothing new except right now there are jobs and there are people who want them. If you are too beat up at this point to find them and sell them then go internal with somebody. Half the damn world is looking for internal recruiters. You certainlly have the street cred to go that direction. @ Drue, in my opinion you don't have a clue what you are talking about. Good recruiting is not the boiler room bullshit you described in your blog. That is obviously where you came from so you don't know any differently. You throw around ridiculous percentages that who the hell knows where you get them. OUt of your butt i suppose. I am in touch myself with many, many contingent recruiters on a weekly basis. None of us cut fees, if our close rate were 20% we would be asleep or on an extended vacation. None of us are burned out except maybe Bill who just needs to pick his ass up and do something differently instead of doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. It's obvious to me that you burned out yourself. You moved over into retained search so you can whittle and diddle around and get paid for it while not making many placements. Good for you. If that makes you happy that's dandy. There is certainly a place for retained search and the people who like it. You remind me of a born again druggie who is convinced because he hit the wall everybody else has and is convinced that everybody else needs to climb on his bandwagon cause it's the only truth and light. Rat Crap. My thiks You are just preaching your "drunkalog" to convince yourself that not making many placements is ok because you get paid to try. That's all a steer can do. The contingency recruiters i know have about a 70% close rate, they like having skin in the game. I am confident that i can speak for thousands of us, we don't want out of contingency. We'll take a retained if we want to kick back and play for a while. Most of us like the competition. We like selling and we sure aren't marginalized. Ask our clients , we have a lot of them. And for the record, your comment, "If you are talking to unemployed people you are going to end up unemployed", is about the most arrogant, condecending remark i have seen in print in 35 years. of recruiting. Don't get invested in something just because you thought it was great idea. Don't reinvent the wheel. Ask somebody who has a lot of experience if something has ever been done before (most things have been tried) find out if it worked or didn't and why. Anybody can handle the mountain tops. Handling the valleys is the test of long term success. Doing the wrong thing longer and harder does not make it work. Hard work at the wrong thing is like keeping your nose to the grindstone rough and holding it down there long enough so that the only thing you end up with is you, your stone and your effin bloody nose. Prior and proper preparation prevents piss poor performance. If you don't know what you are talking about, shut up. Metrics are wonderful. They don't pay the bills. If you spend too much time counting shit you dont' have time to shovel it. If business were easy everybody would own their own. When you first start you don't know squat but you think you do. Watch the guys who have been a success and try to improve on what they do that is working. If you hit a brick wall, don't back up and keep running at it. Figure out a way to get around it. The wall doesn't have a brain, you do, use it. Show up. No matter how talented you are, if you aren't there you will fail. If you give a party and nobody comes it's not a party it's a failed attempt at something. Dont' try to give a party if you already know nobody is going to come. An unprofitable transaction can lead to the next one being profitable. Sometimes a loss leader item builds return business. Dont' give away the farm just for the pleasure of a transaction but don't labor under the misconception that everything you ever do is going to be profitable. Trying to sell somebody an apple when they want an orange just convinces them that all you know about is apples, you don't like oranges or you are too damn stupid to know the difference. If you only have an apple eat it and go find an orange. Check you ego at the door. Big egos are only appreciated after you get to be a big shot and then not very much, you just get to be known as a successful A$$hole. Quit worrying about business rules. Go to work, watch, listen and learn, try it, if you fail, shake it off, learn from it and do something different the next time.
