The vendor runs us a view & click through report For social networking, i.e. LinkedIn, MySpace, Facebook - it's time spent vs outcome - 2 trails here - one, did I hire an individual from contacting them thru these venues or did I get a referral that we hired from the person I contacted. I tend to use LinkedIn for management jobs & other social networking & blogs to drive people to our website to apply - then it's captured by our ATS. If my recruiters insert any candidates themselves we have a field where they capture where the candidate originated from. We also keep track of how much time we spend in these venues & divide that by outcome - # of applicants & did we hire. We also rate the success of Boolean searches we do in our ATS & other sites by the number of viable candidates it produces and again, did we hire any of them. We review our numbers monthly to see what venues worked best for which roles - since my dept covers USA, Canada & Mexico - that adds to the complexity since what works in the US does not work in Canada, or Mexico, and vice versa. Also, we review how much time invested by productivity - did we spend 10 hours on LinkedIn to get candidates but no hire? We have a wrapping service from our largest board so very little effort but if it didn't result in any applicants - it's money not time wasted. I think you could give a statistician a lot of work to view it from every angle! As for your reference to faith having or not having an affect, I joined the recruiting industry in 1996 and did not yet have a personal relationship with God. However, the "recruiting tactics" that my initial managers were training me on, bothered me greatly. Even then, I did not understand why you would want to start anything that required you to lie in order to be successful. If you have to lie, that means more than likely the ultimate outcome may not be good for someone. I got into recruiting because I enjoyed working with people and creating relationships, and thought how great it would be to help them find jobs while also providing a valuable service to my clients. I know some people don't mind getting busted, but I never felt comfortable even going there in the first place. Now, my two cents on "having faith". I finally gave up trying to do it by myself, and entered into a relationship with God 6 years ago, and the more I grow I don't know how, personally, I could separate my faith from my work practices. To me the main key to recruiting, and everything else for that matter, is relationships. I believed it before and even more so now, and it would be very difficult to start any kind of relationship with a lie. Comment on: Topic 'Wednesday Wisdom: To cut, or not to cut?': lients who understand that people make a difference and are willing to invest in their companies - through new people acquisitions - when the market is in flux. Most CEOs are clueless in this regard and will prefer to follow the pack. Especially in Canada where I live. Mediocre is the norm. that's why there are "average" players in every industry. I saw the recession a ways off and diversified my portfolio to include a product service mix to include potential candidates. for example I have a new book coming out shortly which will - I hope - solidify my name in their minds in anticipation of the up tick in 2010. I also spent a lot of money refining a group fo products that are available on a "retail" basis to candidates which again will generate cash flow and make my name more of a known commodity in the future. IMHO you would be best to do 2 things: - repackage your offering to clients to allow then to chose items from your "recruiting menu" instead of forcing them to take it a la carte. Of course those items need tl net out individually at a40% premium should they do the math to require you to do the whole search; and - offer to help job hunters position themselves as well by charging an hourly or engagement fee to fix their resume etc. Too many recruiters IMHO offer their advice for free to job hunters who promise to reward them sometime in the future. In my experience this rarely happens. And the last time I offered a contra deal to a job hunter they laughed {they're still looking}. so it's importnat to tvalue yoiur own skills.
