Throw in job boards, both niche and generalist and to be honest the average jobseeker would struggle to cover all bases if they had to factor in a trawl of social media too. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of social media in general. I've gained business through it. All I am suggesting is that whilst SM may be good for employers profile building campaigns and household names recruiting, when it comes to lesser known organisations and the vast majority of recruiters, it will never be a vehicle via which you can simply post a link to a job and expect the floodgates of quality candidates to open. There are just far too many links being posted and tweeted and the quality is no better than that you can find on a targeted website i.e. the aforementioned media owned career portals and the niche and generalist job boards.…; Added by Alasdair Murray at 3:36am on February 17, 2011

Now, with social being pushed as being all the rage, it's a free for all mess with no one really able to categorically state or back up that what they have to offer is actually where the best people hang out online. The press may be considered old fashioned in the modern day as a recruitment advertising medium but job seekers knew where to look, you knew what you were buying into and, importantly, the publishers could provide valid testimonials to prove their point. We live in an ever-increasing digital world. Customer service ain't what it used to be. What does it take to speak with a human voice over the phone? I typically just keep pressing zero until a recording states, "Hold on, while I connect you with a customer service representative," or far worse, "I'm sorry, you have pressed an invalid number." Then of course, there is that lovely hold music. I rarely walk into a bank anymore, my banking is done on my computer or at an ATM. I rarely pay bills in person any more or even write out a check. Bills are paid by mobile or by website. So, what exactly, does customer service entail these days? What drives you to leave a greater than 15% tip? Are you even cognizant of good service? I recently took my family out for a nice meal. The food was good, the atmosphere was nice, the wait staff was friendly and attentive, as they should be. When the check arrived, there was a list of suggested gratuities, ranging from 15%, 18% and 22%. So, is that customer service? Providing information, a glass of iced tea, and some chopsticks? Do you want to be remembered? I recently read a marketing case study about the Blue Whale Moving Company out of Austin, Texas. This successful moving company was born out of good service. A young college graduate, who had worked his way through school had impressed a hot shot attorney during a move. The attorney told the kid, "Call me when you graduate." He did and together they launched Blue Whale Moving Company, they saw revenue of $1.7 million by year five. All resultant of good customer service. Do you go that extra mile? Do you tailor your services? What is your differentiator? Where is your level of service? Are you deserving of that 22% tip? Topic: Is "The Place for Friends" Still a Place for Friends?: ompany magazines, the cover of the September 2008 issue caught my eye. There stood mop-headed entrepreneurs, Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe of MySpace. "MySpace?" you ask... yep, the first online social network to which I ever belonged. The caption next to their names reads: Don't Mess With MySpace, then goes on to say its founders claim it be more innovative than Apple, Google or Facebook. I loved MySpace. It was a huge learning experience for me, as I became more entranced with what it offered. A way for me to express myself, to blog, to connect with dear friends, as well as those that were mere acquaintances. And all using a tool I had barely dipped my pen in: the world wide web. I first joined MySpace back in 2003. My teenage daughters wanted to join and I let them, on one condition, that I was listed as one of their top friends. Innovation had always fascinated me and I thought this was an interesting use of the internet, though I had NO IDEA back then, the impact it would have. Then, no one thought another network would come along and do it better or outshine Tom Anderson, every MySpace users friend. I maintain a MySpace profile today - barely. And I have friends that still frequent the site and use it for their business, music, film, etc. I suppose there is still a place for the "Place for Friends." I think just looking back at recent history, we can ascertain that change will take place at such a frenetic pace, it will be difficult to keep up with it. It will be interesting to watch what happens to MySpace now. They are not part of the top three but they are still around, and that must account for something, right? I am still a very small fish but in a specialised pond so I do not have numbers that impress yet. I have a Linked In group UK Nuclear Industry I have used to make contact with a number of people new to me and to my site. I ask them to visit and give me feedback. I can see a lot of recruiters use blogs to promote jobs and opportunities. I take on board what you say about branding being consistent and I will be trying to make that my way forward.
