Topic: The Butterfly Effect: An Awakening: thought that there has to be more than this, that I have not yet reached my potential. If this is the case, I better get at it. I better find the road that will take me to my potential. I pray that road isn't a dead end. What can I become? Are you afraid to keep asking that question? How often is it possible to re-invent yourself? I believe it is probable that we can re-invent ourselves every day. Almost eight years ago, someone I know asked himself these same questions. His questions drove him to find answers. He was running his own leasing business and was very successful. He had completed his MBA, but was he really accomplished? Was he really successful? 9/11. Business became a little more challenging but never one to shirk a challenge, he pushed forward. Then, the questions loomed huge over his head after the unexpected death of his father. His business focus shifted to closing his business instead of growing it. The death of his father was his butterfly effect. I understand this because "he" is my brother, Andrew, and I experienced something very similar when our father passed. In the leasing world, you are successful if you help other people go into debt. This was no longer something Andrew felt good about doing. "I really loved nurturing, developing and helping other people." He pursued a second Master's in Personal and Executive Coaching. "My dad was young. He was a dreamer and he always focused on doing something bigger and better. He was always so healthy." There were many dreams that he never realized. "It was an awakening moment for me. He was sixty-five, I was thirty-five and it was the first time I felt vulnerable, that I could fail, that I was mortal. I realized that I am going to die and if I am like him, I have about thirty years left. I took inventory of my life and my business. " That is when Andrew realized that what he was doing, his business, isn't what he wanted to do. "How do I get out of here? My dad was too young to die and there was so much left unanswered about his life." "While the early years of my financial career had been very creative, I suddenly felt very stagnant." But he was afraid to let go, there is a lot of ego tied up in being the president of one's own company and having built a landmark office in the local community. He quotes Tom Cruise from Risky Business, " 'Sometimes, you gotta just say what the heck...' I am going to go out and do this for me. That is what my dad always did." In 2002, shortly after our father passed, Andrew started Telios Corporation where his specialty is Behavioral Executive Coaching - and it is safe to say that he loves what he does. Andrew just completed his PhD and will graduate later this month. I think he's done with school, but I have learned to never say never. "I am a good listener and my clients get that I am a good listener. I can say the truth to them and it doesn't hurt their feelings." What does all of this have to do with recruiting and HR? Everything. "The most important asset really is the human side of the equation - focus less on the resource side. We have the resource side down, time to focus on the human side." Topic: CAVEAT EMPTOR: et into networks that are restricted to local cities, my email has been a steady stream of people coming out of the woodwork agreeing that they think it's a scummy, lowlife thing to do. But thank you for letting us know what you are all about. It's always nice to know who to stay away from. I am sure his email steam has been full of adoring fellows who think being bogus is totally wonderful if it gets them into places and connected with people that they would not otherwise be able to reach without a little more effort. People are reporting that there is a career counselor who is coaching candidates to set up bogus company profiles on Linkedin showing themselves as the CEO or a VP so they will be contacted by recruiters. or companies. May they be contacted by a bogus recruiter, a big dose of kismet and karma for both of you. Another person has reported that there is a recruiter in the DFW area who prides herself on having set up 50 bogus profiles on Linkedin which she then uses to make recommendations of her services.. oh honey, that is just too pitiful, may you marry another lying narcissist. And the list goes on and on. Since the coming of age of the internet (and before albeit it was not quite as easy) the ease for sleaze, scams, cons, lies and misrepresentations has become an art form unto it's self. I have spent 35 years in this industry fighting the crappy reputation that recruiters have earned due to the scammers, slammers, cowboys and crooks.. I shall not stop now calling bullshit on scams, what else would you call a bogus profile. A fun time avatar? We scream to the rafters about being professionals, being respected for what we do, building trust with our candidates and clients. We bitch our heads off about candidates who lie on their resumes, lie about their educational background. We beat the drum loudly about transparency, authenticity. We rail because our clients do not have enough respect for us to give us feedback or return our cold calls. Are we in any position to ask for trust, respect and to be treated as professionals if we think it's fine to set up bogus profiles......for any reason. Do we then say, well the rules are silly about phony profiles so it's ok and in fact gee that's a cool idea. I can't control what anybody else does or how they run their business but i can certainly make it known loud and clear that it is my humble opinion if you can't make it as a recruiter whithout setting up bogus profiles to connect with people, if you can't get a real recommendation without setting up bogus profiles then recommending yourself you should really consider selling used cars that don't run or sign up for an email scam to con people into sending you their social security number. or consider credit card fraud. Fraud is fraud. Be it a job that does not exist or a phony profile. As i said on twitter this morning. "A lie, just like a rose by any other name is still a rose and a lie. So if you need to lie to make a living or be a big shot go for it but be advised, there are a lot of us who think you are scum and the reason our industry has a bad name in a lot of venues.. If your take is that i am being "holier than thou" by calling bogus business practices bogus. Thank you for the compliment. And i wish you 50 bogus resumes in a row by some other bogus recruiter just like you trying to find out where your job is so they can call your client. You deserve each other. I loathe your types, you pollute an industry that deserves better. I wish St. Patrick had done a better job with the snakes. Topic: Why are you frustrated with online job search?: around. As part of this effort, we have spoken with hundreds of professionals about their experience and frustration with current job search. The feedback has been remarkably consistent with the key points being: 1.) Searching for jobs with current tools is tedious – In our initial surveys perhaps the most cited frustration with current job search was how tedious a process it is. Searching by job titles and zip code then having to open job post after job post to only occasionally, if at all, come across an interesting opportunity. Of course, once you do find and apply to one it seems to frequently hit the dreaded black hole (see 4 below). 2.) Stalking is creepy – Another point of feedback was the discomfort with tools that scrap personal information from all over the internet, mostly from social sites, to offer this data to recruiters and open professionals up to unwanted spam. While this is promising for recruiters, to simply finding potential candidates, many professionals felt strange when they learn this is how their information was gained by the recruiter. 3.) Need for discretion – There was a general discomfort with the social model – that of putting your career background on full public display. Feedback around this point was that it lead to too much unqualified job opportunities being spammed to the professional, frequent connection requests from recruiters that they did not know (or for that matter what the connection request was related to). While they do admit this can save them time from having to search, they stated that the trade off frequently was not worth it. 4.) The dreaded black hole – After a lot of effort, you finally find a job that you have an interest in, hit apply and off it goes into the black hole. Frequently you will receive a canned email that thanks you for submitting your résumé but beyond that, you have no idea if a human being even will give it a review. You don’t know if it made it through some obscure keywords based ATS system – or even if they have one. Effectively it feels when applying online that your information falls into a black hole and never comes out. 5.) Lack of human contact – When we surveyed many of these professionals the general feeling was that every year it seems more technology is being introduced to further separate humans from talking to one another in a distinctly human process. Many professionals feel the technology available today to screen out candidates it being relied on too heavily by companies and eliminating them from opportunities they know they are well qualified for. However, since they rarely speak with a human being, it becomes impossible to prove this point. 6.) Tedious nature of applying for a job – Beyond the black hole perception previously discussed was frustrating enough, but other frequent mentions were: canned video interviews, various types of nonsensical tests and laborious application processes. 7.) Too much spam – Professionals were dis-satisfied with tools that matched keywords on their profiles and simply provided them a constant stream of job openings that were not applicable to their skills or backgrounds. Vice Presidents frequently receive Executive Assistant to Vice President jobs and Technology Product Managers frequently receive software development positions. As a result, this is simply viewed as spam and, when too much of it is delivered from a source, eventually gets marked as such in their email which may cause them to miss out on a real match if it happens. 8.) Being recruited where they don’t want to be – An often cited frustration was recruiters spamming professionals on sites that they are on for other purposes. In particular, one large professional social network came up as the primary example of where this happens. Another was on industry forums or groups that they are members of to collaborate with other industry professionals but instead get pinged with recruiting requests.
