Topic: Climbing the Ladder of Distress: the Women's prison on the other side of town to repair (what else?) the air conditioning. You must climb a 12-foot ladder to access the inside of a duct/shaft with an open hatch that reaches into the Las Vegas sky. The hatch is locked into place and you begin your work: tedious, time-consuming work in a small, cramped area. The wind begins to pick up and a strong gust loosens the hatch, sending it crashing onto your head. Thank goodness you have a hard hat on but the force of the hit knocks your 6'5" frame off the ladder, down the shaft, crashing to the floor in a heap. A floor-buffer breaks your fall and a broom stick set to impale you snaps in two. As you slump to the floor, pain fills the left side of your body, which has taken the brunt of the fall. Thank goodness for the two guards that must accompany you at all times while in this maximum-security facility. They have witnessed this freak sequence of events and notify emergency personnel immediately and you are rushed to the hospital. Through a series of tests and examinations, you are released albeit warned of the ensuing soreness and pain that will, no doubt, arrive at your doorstep shortly. A freak accident with an unbelievably non-paralyzing or life-taking result. This actually happened to my brother yesterday during what should have been his normal shift. He will be returning to work tomorrow, aching I'm sure but no worse for the wear (and tear). Upon hearing this story, interestingly enough, I thought of the twists and turns that arrive at each of our jobs daily; when the course of our day is altered so severely that a new strategy must be developed and fast. I thought about the spontaneous, unexpected jolts that hit almost every job. I thought about the preparation that each of us must accomplish in order to withstand the gusts that knock us back a step or two or cause us to waver and fall. Do you have a hard hat? Do you wear it? Are you ready for the tough questions your client or hiring manager will surely ask? Are ready to give a full reporting of an interview and weed out the kinks that may make your candidate ill-prepared or less than enthusiastic when they enter the lion's den of a final or panel interview? Do you backfill your candidate field in case your rock star falls? Have you made the decision of who it is you truly represent, the hiring manager or the candidate or maybe just yourself? You will never be ready for every fall, but you can have a back-up plan in place. Topic: Striving for Vincedom: am on a fixed income. He knows I just need an honest person to take care of my car's maintenance. Over the last two years, I have grown to trust him; he is that honest person. He is definitely one of the good guys. He always checks everything when I go in for an oil change. Typically, I will leave having paid just $24.95, but occasionally brake pads need to be replaced or the air filter changed out. Vince takes care of my little Honda that now has 120,000 miles on it. It has been a good car, having been driven all over the West plus my three hour daily commute. This day was no different. The work would take about an hour and a half and cost about $120, oil change, new brake pads, tires rotated. See? One of the good guys. A couple years ago, before I found Vince, I took my car into an "oil change franchise" for my regular three to five month-oil change. They told me that, along with my oil change, I needed to change out my air filter and drain my radiator fluid and then, add more. I questioned but also, relinquished. The next night I was driving my kids across town when I noticed the temperature gauge going crazy. The car heated up far too quickly and when I was able to pull over, a smell and smoke were emitting from under the hood. I soon discovered that my radiator cap had not even been put back on when I had taken my car in the day before. Argghhh! How did this happen? I have always been so careful, not wanting to lube anything in a jiffy, let alone my only transportation. Luckily, there was no permanent damage to my vehicle and you can bet that the "shop guy" got an earful the next morning. Shoddy workmanship, excuses for shoddy workmanship, and the lack of money returned or discount offered astounded me. I had never seen such a thing or heard of such poor work being done in an area that, with a little bit of consumer review, could make or break you. There is a huge gap between each of these mechanic experiences. And they each served a lesson to me. We each have potential within us to be a Vince, to give more than is expected, to drive the customer/candidate/client/employee experience, to provide epic service, to offer true value to the relationships we establish with long-term in mind. We can also be a quick fix for a non-problem, that in the end will just be a bigger problem. Do you provide quick and inadequate work? Is it important that you provide the best service possible? Why? Comment on: Blog Post 'Is OD Dead? Yes, We Killed It-Or Did We?': st, you are correct: O.D. and Training are not the same, but they do get lumped into the same boat. Second, we have to speak in business terms, not in sub industry lingo. If we want to have leverage with senior staff, and people at the CEO level, we have to be able to make tangible case for our value to the business. As a friend of mine says, we have to be business people in HR/OD not HR/OD people in the business. Next, point: I want a solution, but as you said, be careful what you call it. As discussed, I wouldn’t go to a proctologist and ask him to remove my wisdom teeth. Nor would I ask the VP of Sales to conduct an organizational assessment. We have to be clear about our roles and what we contribute. On the other hand, we have to be able to communicate, and articulate what we are doing in a way that conveys meaning. One day, we will come to terms the fact that OD interventions (barfy buzz word) do have a place. But, as in any service there are good adaptations and bad. My practice and experience bears the following to be true-there is a place for organization analysis when the culture is toxic, dysfunctional, or causing business failure. Unfortunately, many of these organizations either cannot afford to conduct the analysis, are blind to their problems, or don’t care about the consequences until it is too late-and the business starts falling apart. It’s the healthy organizations that take their temperature, and if there’s a fever, they take the appropriate remedy. I’ve conducted organization analysis, presented my findings, and have leaders look at me and say, “this is great, we know, but we don’t want to work on that problem right now…or interesting, Margo-but we can’t afford to conduct the follow up at this time.” There’s nothing more frustrating than taking a look at the condition on an organization, identifying their goals and where they want to be, analyzing the gaps, only to find the organization is willing to spend the money on the study, but not on the recommended soultions. This leads me to my next comment: why pay for a service and not take the service providers advice. That makes about as much sense as visiting your doctor, being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and after serious warning, binging on candy and not take the insulin. Obviously it would kill a diabetic. Doesn’t the same hold true for organizations? With businesses folding left and right, I wonder how many spent thousands of dollars on consulting fees and studies before they folded? Sure as a CEO, Steve you can feel my pain. It’s one of the reasons OD is dying. With that said, the necessity for good analyis, followed up by rigorous action will never die. Long live O.D.
