I am taking on a different more silent role to allow me to look into opportunities with a F500-1000 firm. I want to be a CEO/EVP before I retire. Most EVP/CEO’s come from Sales, Sales Management, or Operations. Where I would choose to work would be much like where I would buy stock. Right now commodity products and services is where I am targeting my search. Companies involved in corn, soy, oil, natural gas, gold, silver, or services that are less volatile or "recession" proof....like payrolling, out sourced services related to tax, law, medical, healthcare, energy, education and healthcare..etc etc etc. Also, maybe this is short-sited but, I am really targeting F500-F1000 companies where I too can add value to my core competencies and expertise while adding value to that organization. I have 11+ years at F500 firms. What has hurt me the most, even though I have made a TON of money, is having started/run my own firm these last 6 years. Corporations I am applying to have a difficult time normalizing my performance data. I need to stay on a path where I can add normalized quantifiable performance data to become an officer in a Corporation in the next 25 years. Simply, sending resumes directly to companies via Job Boards, the Company Website, or Niche Recruiters is not the most productive approach. There is no relationship built and the "right to do business" is never established. One cannot make a connection through anonymity. At some point, time has to be invested in meeting someone. It is the same in all industries where goods are purchased and sold. After all, how many houses or cars would you expect to successfully sell or buy soley from a picture and stats on the web without knowing anything about the buyer or seller? In fact, would I speak to them each in exactly the same way or treat their opinions and advice equally? One's personality is often a direct reflection of who one is dealing with - and rightly so. Besides, do we not all grow & change as well? So not only are we more than one person, we become a different person as we mature and as our circumstances and relationships change throughout our lives. I also see generational differences in perspectives on this topic. I find young people have an easier time of blending their work & home personas than say boomers who are more accustomed to compartmentalizing the various aspects of their lives. Don't get me started on how privacy is being eroded by modern ideas about "transparency" and "authenticity" - do I really need to know that my coworker suffers from irritable bowel syndrome or the details of her messy divorce? There are some facets (and secrets) of your personal life I'd rather not know about, thank you. There's also "politically correct" backlash when we try to bring too much of our personal lives into the workplace - like religion, or the politics surrounding volatile issues such as gun control, gay rights or abortion... or Obama's birth certificate. Sometimes it's a good idea to leave your personal opinions at home, or at least confine them to the proper context like the editorial pages of your local newspaper or blog. Call me old shool, but IMO your "professional" persona is something you can put on like you used to put on your "dress for success" work clothes. In a day where the most casual attire can be acceptable in a work environment, a business-like attitude & professional persona while at work (even if you're virtual) shows respect for your coworkers, clients and business associates. …; Added by Sylvia Dahlby at 3:07pm on May 1, 2011
