Topic: Fatal Distraction: ded breaks. Our two young daughters, aged three and five, splashed nearby. The book I was reading held my interest only briefly. Our five-year old soon planted herself close by warming her wet body on the hot cement. I glanced around to find the three-year old and only saw her water wings near the end of my chaise. I quickly scanned the pool and saw nothing. Then a thought occurred that I should look down right beside me, in the pool I saw her clear blue eyes wide open with terror, three inches under the water. Her little arms flailed silently in the blue. No words were spoken, but as if reading my mind, her father swooped his hand under the water and scooped her tiny body out of the pool and into my lap. She clung to me while I asked if she was alright, could she breathe, why had she taken her "floaties" off, if she needed to cough - I was too scared to scold, just thankful she was breathing and in my arms. She would have drowned silently beside me. There would have been no pomp and circumstance, no crescendo-ing music, no splashing or screaming, just silence. I have often thought about how could she have slipped into the water near me without me even noticing, how was she able to remove the inflatable wings that kept her afloat, and why had I not been watching more closely? It is very easy to lose control by ignoring potential problems or issues. Businesses, requisitions, proposals, partnerships..., all require constant supervision. One slip at the wrong end of the pool and all could be easily lost. Paying attention is a small price to pay to keep everything in check. Focus is a requisite practice when a reputation or deal is on the line. And we are easily distracted - oh so easily. We were a lucky family that day. My little girl didn't suffer any ill affects from her near drowning. The affects brought upon me, however, were not "ill" but conception-altering. What I/we almost lost was far too precious to ever take for granted again. The water appeared smooth and noiseless but its grip was deadly. The standards will emerge but you can be sure that any job needs a title, a location and the fact that it's a job. All three items will be hash tagged, don't you think? Also, if I know for sure that you are a good source for a steady diet of valuable info I might as well link to you. Unless of course I don't want to point my competition to a good source. Likewise, if I know that you are a good market for what I have to offer I want you to be my follower (unless, again, it can hurt me to make our connection public). But, look at most recruiters' lists of followers and the people they're following. Most followers are sources of professional info and water cooler chit chat. From your vantage point as an experienced resume strategist what would you suggest to a person who was applying for a position that was listed as Director of Recruiting when their previous title had been Director of Talent Acquisition? As you research the company you notice that they do not use fancy, fluffed up titles. All through the job description they use recruiting to describe the duties and responsibilities. No "talent acquisition" or "recruitment" anywhere. Would you suggest to this person that it looks like the company does not use the trendy title so would you change a title they had or have to make them appear a better fit? I think this is where we get into some deep water due to the differences in titles of people who do the same thing but are called such diverse and sometimes outlandish titles.
