Comment on: Blog Post 'When great candidates make bad hires': flags of someone running away instead of running TO them. I do think as recruiters we need to do our best to help our candidates and employers make the best decisions that will help grow their business or careers. What I try to do is talk very candidly to candidates about how important their choices are, how they already know how miserable it is to make the wrong employment choice. How they have great skills and are going to be in demand so they can afford to choose wisely and carefully. I try to dig into their reasons for leaving and what they really want. I don't sugar coat anything about the employer. Basically I appeal to their sense of professional pride. I think one of the main reasons people leave after a short stint is because the business situation at their employer changed significantly from when they were hired. Business that the employer thought they all but "had in the bag" at the point they hired this expert did not materialize as planned. Or part of the business was sold off or a unforseen shift in the industry. Topic: RecruitFest, Waving a Monstrous Flag!: elightful encounters with the likes of the Recruiting Animal, John Sumser, Craig Silverman, Jerry Albright, Maren Hogan, Julia Stone, Geoff Webb, Eric Winegardner, Maha Akiki and, of course, Jason Davis. I am insanely jealous of those that will attend today. Raise your hand and start a controversial conversation on my behalf, the Hit Girl will miss being in the house... Why attend a conference? Why go through the hassle and expense? Have you figured out the gain for yourself or do you blindly attend, hoping light will be bestowed upon you in the form of knowledge or connection? Opportunities abound for knowledge and connections - everywhere, at multiple conferences and local or regional networking events. I have found it imperative to select wisely which events/conferences that I attend. The benefit and return on my investment must me down be apparent and explainable. Those that I leave to attend - my family and co-workers - must see that return, that growth. If not, what is the value, the worth? A very wise man sat me down not too long ago and asked me these questions. What does it bring you? What does it bring those around you? If you can answer following each experience with the positive, then you must be doing something right - you have been wise in your selection. The choices are many, and the decision is not so easy to make. But expansion of mind and reach is never easy, not even for Buddah. Or Tony Robbins, or that Sham Wow guy... And while what's best for you is important - it isn't everything. But you know this already..., I guess I am telling myself. Thanks for the indulgence. Comment on: Blog Post 'The Many Choices of HR': that HR can be a very rewarding career, also for career oriented professionals. Being a MBA myself I know that HR is a rather "odd" choice for this academic background but only because it's rare doesn't mean it's not every bit as challenging and rewarding as any other path. It really comes down to what you enjoy doing - if you hate numbers stay away from Accounting, if you don't like dealing with people (and their problems) HR is not your thing. Especially a broad degree like a MBA gives you the luxury of choosing different career paths so I'd say choose wisely and not only with a dollar sign hanging over your head. One thing I must say though is that changing from one industry sector to another (in HR) is everything but easy in my opinion. You get very easily typecast as "Manufacturing", "Hospitality" or whatever the case may be. I would therefore recommend to any newcomer to HR to plan and think ahead, which industries will suit them most. Comment on: Topic 'Selecting a new ATS and need some feedback': TS as with buying a musical instrument, surfboard, or other equipment used within a skilled performance; what works OK when you are just getting used to it may be too limited or too tweaky for your general style. The most important part of the choice is your style: exactly what records and interfaces will you actually be drawing the most value from. If you are a phone monster, you need good call planning, staging, and activity management. If you do a lot with email, your email client integration will be key. If you do a lot of posting and forwarding, your candidate submission workflow is key. If you are just plain busy in all aspects, you want an app that is also solid in all areas. Buying a complex tool for a complex job with a one hour demo where someone else does the driving is not the most reliable way to choose, but its the most common......the smarter way is to take one out surfing for a day or two and see how it really rides....but few buyers and even fewer vendors are into that kind of selection process.... …; Added by Martin H.Snyder at 9:40am on September 12, 2012
