This is People Management or Coaching 101. It’s very similar to how youngsters operate in competitive pick-up games on the playground. Performance and results define who gets selected first, next and last in the next pickup game. You say that, “You can’t plan for the unexpected. Life happens.” Actually you can plan for the unexpected—in fact you better be planning for the unexpected. Your idea seems to fly in the face of preparedness training, e.g., fire drills, emergency planning, disaster planning, or having a contingency plan and budget just in case the unexpected happens. And hiring “smarter” doesn’t necessarily workout. Putting very “smart” people in slow moving, conservative operating, micromanaged work environments often frustrates new hires who are smart enough to leave such organizations. And “Life”, indeed, does happen, but if: parents, schools, teachers, coaches, managers, experience, history and common sense teach us anything it is that you should hope for the best; prepare to be the best you can be--but prepare for the unexpected and have a contingency plan(s) in case of downsides. Topic: Getting Rid of Everything Rotten: from eating just one banana, how it is the leading fruit among athletes, how just two supply enough energy to complete a strenuous ninety-minute workout. Also expressed were the different maladies that are alleviated by the ever-lovin' banana, including depression, PMS, anemia, high blood pressure, constipation, heartburn, motions sickness, stress, strokes and so on... There was also talk of using banana skins for different skin or muscle afflictions. Take the inside of a banana peel and rub it on rashes, mosquito bites, charley horses, and aching joints... Bananas are also said to increase brain power, help with nerves, and ease a hangover. God bless the banana... I always have a problem with bananas because they seem to go rotten before I have time to eat them. Now that I know they will cure or ease almost anything, that might provide enough impetus to get them gone at my house. Interestingly enough, a few years ago, I purchased a book called "Letting Go of Your Bananas" with the subtitle, "How to become more successful by Getting Rid of Everything Rotten in Your Life" I had dealt with a horrible work experience and was struggling in a bad marriage. I thought maybe this book could help me out - the title, alone, put a smile on my face. How are your rotten bananas these days? Are you ready to let them go? Think about what your rotten bananas are. Work + Play + Home = Life. We have responsibilities in Life and, somehow, we must attain balance in that Life. If letting go of the rotten in your life helps you to achieve that precious balance, then let the letting begin. There are times we allow fear to rot the good. Think about what you fear most. What is it..., Do you fear failure? Do you fear loss? Do you fear getting older? Fear can be overpowering but did you know that "Passion Eats Fear for Lunch?" (D. Drubin) Interestingly enough, there is a chance that you are the "rotten" in someone else's life. If that recognition falls upon you, take care of it and move on. Find the peace and balance you need by acknowledging the bananas, good and bad. And timing is everything. Hang around the rotten too long and what happens? Other things start to rot. My mother used to say, "Something is rotten in Denmark" - a reference from Ol' Will Shakespeare in Hamlet (Something is rotten in the state of Denmark) It simply means: evil, if permitted will corrupt good. Topic: Stealing Culpability: not quite kicked in yet. We drove silently along in the dusk with some oldies softly playing in the background. Suddenly, I heard a low rumble that began to loudly build, then quickly died out. It lasted about 6 -7 seconds - in the case of a tummy growl, that can be an eternity. I looked down at my stomach, stunned at the noise and wondering how it could have occurred without me feeling some kind of vibration. While we were stopped at a light, I actually stared at my stomach for a moment, lost in thought. My son finally, nudged me and said, "Mom, that was my stomach." We both started laughing; I had blindly thought it was mine because I was hungry and he just thought it was just hilarious that I didn't know it was his. I actually assumed fault even though the evidence, had I paid any mind to it, told me it was not my stomach that had roared. We laughed some more and quickly forgot about it. He had stepped up and taken responsibility when he realized that I was just going to absorb accountability; funny how it worked out. And it made me think of the many times I am willing to just assume in order to avoid confrontation or conflict of any kind. While this can be a good trait, somewhat that of a peacemaker, it can also be turned into an opportunity to teach responsibility, to exhibit control by defining what just took place and assigning not so much blame, but more - culpability. When we realize what our responsibilities truly are, then we are able to ascertain growth through that comprehension without feeling guilt or taking blame. It is what it is. And typically, it is just the way tasks are assigned or where responsibility happens to lie. Sometimes, an assignment isn't even necessary; sometimes, it the nature of the chips falling makes that choice for us. I have no problem claiming fault, not only where it is due, but also where and when I think it will help. Sometimes, we just need to acknowledge failure and move on, instead of protecting or trying to make it right. Admission is half the battle - but only if that admission is on your own behalf. Topic: Cellulite with a Side of Reality: and spikes. There were hills surrounding my home and my work schedule plus family duties permitted only one time slot for my new physical endeavor. Six AM. Ouch. But I was committed and after a three-month warm-up, I had built my endurance and distance to perfection. Five miles daily. Within nine months, a line appeared down the center of my belly. No exercise in my past had ever created a belly of which I could be proud. Plus, I felt good, I felt accomplished and at only 1.25 hours, there was minimum daily output. Just loss of a bit of sleep but some gained alone time that had diminished significantly with my entrance to motherhood. I liked it and I was proud of my efforts and the visible results. And yes, it did take about nine months… sadly. Enter the four C’s; I love them. I love chocolate. I love cake. I love cookies. I love candy – of almost any kind. And denying me those things I loved only drove me a little insane. By adding my workout, I was able to still enjoy my sweets and maintain some semblance of discernable health. I knew my dimpled thighs would never go away without an invasive surgery of which I wanted no part. So a measure of balance was gained and in the process a certain freedom. During the summer when I was at my physical peak, we had invited family and friends to join us at the river with our “jet skis” whenever possible, whenever we were out. My sister and her young family joined us on one such outing. In prepping to launch the boats and get everyone to the place we would spend the day, there was a bit of walk to the dock where transport and ferrying would take place. I walked ahead, in my cut-off jean shorts and bikini, leading the way. After a few minutes, my sister called to me – “You know, you still have cellulite…” I think my heart and brain stopped at the same time. It hurt. Badly. And that is when it hit me, in my effort to gain balance, I had lost it. I really had cared too deeply about what others thought – or it would not have hurt. I yelled over my shoulder, “I know…” But I hadn’t known and I hadn’t anticipated a call out. Reality slapped me in the face and, in an instant, I felt what I thought was balance draining from my psyche. My fake balance was replaced by truth – which is the best balance of all.
