Although I looked at new sites a month ago, here I am again with a new batch. Why? Well, honestly, because our industry seems quite prolific in generating new businesses! As is often the case, I will be including some sites that are in the online recruiting biz but don't quite fit the 'job board' box. I hope that's ok. Here we go:

OnContracting: As you might guess by the name, OnContracting is aimed at contractors - specifically, 'knowledge workers', i.e., tech. They say that they are"the world's most comprehensive staffing agency directory that tells you which staffing agencies can get you a contract job at any client company you are interested in." The site also claims to 'curate' the contractors, but it isn't clear how they screen them.

BevNineToFive: This Vancouver, BC-based site targets the beverage industry in Canada (thus the name). It's a WordPress-based site and is a good example of how that CRM is adapting to the job board market.

Harri: Sticking with the foodie theme, Harri services the hospitality industry, with geographic focuses on 5 U.S. metro areas. It reminds me a bit of ShiftGig before that site moved out of the hospitality space. And yes, it's not that new (launched in 2012), but it's new to me - and that's why it's here!

Scale: Scale wants businesses to outsource their core processes and tasks that require people, not algorithms, to handle. This could include anything from appointment scheduling to more complicated matters like content moderation and transcriptions. It's similar to Amazon's Mechanical Turk, but Scale claims to vet its contractors and thus provide higher quality output. To use Scale, a company places a line of code into their app to allow certain tasks to be completed on demand. Interesting.

getTalent: Not really a job board, getTalent says it is a candidate pipelining and engagement tool. Translation? A lead nurturing system aimed at candidates. The twist? This SuccessFactors-funded company was acquired by DHI aka Dice back in 2013, but is now starting to make headway in the market (at least according to the latest earning call from DHI).

Canyu.do: It wouldn't be a site roundup with something representing the gig economy. Canyu.do wants to 'make work play'. What is it? The video suggests that particpants 'join' a specific company's area; then they can get called to do 'fill in' work. The U.K. mobile-first site is working on funding. We'll see where it goes.

TastyHire: Not sure about the name, but the basis of TastyHire is 30-second job seeker videos which employers review. The site charges both job seekers and companies (although the former can post a simple profile at no charge). At present they're only operating in New York.

Knack: It's gamer time! Knack (you don't know how hard it is not to write The Knack - oops, guess I did!) uses app-based games to identify potential candidates for employers. On the candidate side, it helps users figure out potential careers - and of course links them to available jobs. Sounds cool, and they have a ton of testimonials.

Recruitz.io: They call themselves 'next gen recruitment advertising'. What does that really mean? Programmatic advertising with AI-driven ad copy optimization. I believe the AI is called Adam (what, no Eve?). Their network includes Facebook, Instagram, dribble, and Indeed, with lots of others 'coming soon'.

That's enough for now. More soon!
Recruiting site roundup: the July editiontag:recruitingblogs.com,2016-07-06:502551:BlogPost:19762332016-07-06T13:00:00.000ZJeff Dickey-Chasinshttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/JeffDickeyChasins

It's been a couple of months since my last roundup, so I thought it was time to take a look at what is new, interesting, and up-and-coming. Let's go!:

Handshake: This site (which landed $10M in funding in February) focuses on college grads. It claims 110 universities and over 90% of the Fortune 500 are currently using it. The platform includes a survey tool, analytics, and tie-ins to job posting suppliers. Seems very comprehensive, particularly for their target audience of college career centers.

Mustard: This Irish site targets drivers, bartenders, event staff, movie extras, and other 'shift' workers - in other words, not your usual salaried office types. Employers pick the type of worker they need - movie extras, for example - then set a location. Mustard notifies everyone that matches, and those workers that are interested can share their profile with the employer. Interesting. Why the name? I have no idea.

randrr: randrr is "a career opportunities platform for the common good". The site goes on to talk about how job boards don't care, how the recruiting process is broken, about recruiting transparency, and how candidates should be able to search and apply on 'any device'. Yet I spent a long time looking for how randrr works - even reading their white paper - and never figured it out. Go take a look - maybe you can. If so, let me know.

Boon: Boon is basically a software platform for building a 'referral community'. Companies post jobs and promise to pay for referrals. The site also mentioned gamification, but how that plays out was not clear to me. With a claimed 1 million candidates in the system, it seems that a company would have a good chance to find someone, somehow.

SelfieJobs: This European job app targets any job where "personality and style is part of the job". That's shorthand for entry-level jobs in retail, customer service, etc. This Swedish company features candidate profiles with pictures, maps, and a personal profile. Although the site is quite stylish, the organization felt a bit confusing. But then, I'm not Swedish - or European!

KonnectAgain: This is another platform for building a talent community, with a particular focus on 'alumni' - those candidates that have had previous relationships with a company, i.e. a past employee. Basically, it provides demographics and activity info on specific candidates, as well as a platform for reengaging them. The system is modeled on similar systems used by alumni organizations.

Woo: Not actually that new (except to me), Woo's basic premise is that it tells the candidate how 'in demand' they are and how much they're worth. What does this really mean? The candidate (a tech type, of course!) submits a wish list of the type of job they want, Woo sends it to employers, and any employer that's interested can ask for more info or make an offer. So 'in demand' and 'worth' boils down to whether an employer responds or not.

UpScored: This 'career discovery platform' has candidates upload their resume, self-assess on 3 sliding scales, and indicate a couple of target industries. Based on that, UpScored 'matches' you to 25 jobs and includes the level of match for each. It seems to have some reiterative learning built in, asking candidates to 'upscore' the matches based on relevance. This last feature seems to me to hold the most promise - a candidate can sometimes be the best judge of whether a good match was made or not. I'll be curious to see how this develops.

TheOutbound: Nothing fancy, just a straight ahead job board focused on positions in the outdoor industry. Why include it here? Because this niche is somewhat underserved - there are a few long term sites (JobMonkey, CoolWorks), but it's still a relatively underserved niche. And yes, the site is well done, too!

EmployUs: It's a referral site, asking you to change your friend's life by referring them - and picking up some cash for yourself. The mobile-focused service claims that 1 in 6 applicants are hired.

Scoutible: Scoutible is a hiring tool that using games to determine what a candidate is good at - then matches them to the right job. How does it work? Not sure - every link led to a 'submit your email' box. I did...but no response. Oh well.

Well, that's it for now. There are plenty more waiting in my folder - but they'll have to wait until next time!
Another one bites the dusttag:recruitingblogs.com,2016-05-31:502551:BlogPost:19698942016-05-31T12:30:00.000ZJeff Dickey-Chasinshttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/JeffDickeyChasins

"First, on behalf of the entire Simply Hired team I would like to thank you for your partnership. We have appreciated working with you and your clients. I am writing you to let you know that the Company is in the process of ceasing operations and winding down and, as a result, the Job Sponsorship Program will be discontinued 30-days from this notice, or on June 26th, 2016. We greatly appreciate the partnership we've had with your company and regret that we will not be able to continue working with you. We would be happy to set up a call at your earliest convenience to discuss your options."

In case you haven't figured it out, SimplyHired is going to the great aggregator graveyard. As Todd Raphael said in ERE.net, "Pieces of the company/technology will be acquired...Employees are apparently facing an uncertain future and aren’t included in the parts being taken over." Yes, after tens of millions of investment dollars and a fairly recent management upheaval, SimplyHired is throwing in the towel.

Why? Well, I have no inside knowledge (although judging from the massive amount of email I received this weekend, folks think I do!). But I am willing to bet these were all factors:

Since its inception, SimplyHired has always played second fiddle to Indeed. For a while, it offered more features and functions than its larger competitor - but that advantage has faded in recent years. So I suspect clients looked at the two - and chose Indeed for its significantly larger traffic numbers.

A management overhaul a few years ago brought a new logo - but little else. Although much of the sales staff was purged, the new salespeople were unable to pull SimplyHired out of 2nd place.

In the meantime, other competitors have emerged - including Jobs2Careers, Jobrapido, and Beyond. Then there is AppCast, RealMatch, and - well, you get the picture.

It's always frustrating to see a company that has done good things and delivered for its clients lose its edge. Sometimes they manage to muddle through and make a comeback (Monster, perhaps?) - but more often, the money runs out and the employees find themselves on the other side of the online recruiting machine.

I hope you never have to write and send a letter like the one above. To all of the SimplyHired folks out there looking for their next gig - good luck! The positive news for you is that our industry is booming - even if SimplyHired isn't.
Totally new recruiting sites (at least to me!): check 'em out!!tag:recruitingblogs.com,2016-04-19:502551:BlogPost:19616822016-04-19T13:00:00.000ZJeff Dickey-Chasinshttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/JeffDickeyChasins

Skeeled: As they say, 'we screen, you hire' - one of the more succinct tag lines I've seen in a while. This Luxembourg/Belgium company already works with a number of job boards. The screening sits between the 'Apply' button and the employer's ATS. An interesting approach that also includes video.

Scorify: As the site says, "Do not ask a developer if he knows programming. Ask him to write lines of codes instead!". Nevertheless - the employer will need to know a bit about code in order to set up their test. The system seems to be pretty automated - so it could be useful to any employer hiring lots of coders.

CloudPeeps: The name makes me think of extraordinarily fluffy Easter candy - but in fact this is a site that supplies freelance PR, writers, and social media types to clients. Does the world need another freelancer site/virtual staffing company? Well, it doesn't really matter, because CloudPeeps is only one of literally dozens I've seen over the past year.

RefugeesWork: This Austrian site connects refugees with work - a timely service given the current situation in Europe. The job board also includes info for refugees on who can work, and for how long. As you might guess, RefugeesWork makes a diversity pitch to employers.

CorrelationOne: An excellent name for a recruiting site focused on data scientists. Candidates can build a portfolio to show prospective employers, take tests, and receive coaching. Nice implementation - worth a look.

CornerJob: You create your profile in 1 minute, click on a job to apply - and the site promises you'll get a response in 24 hours. This mobile-centric service is covering France, Spain, Mexico, and Italy - an eclectic mix for the job seeker. The founders focus on "low-skill, high-turnover recruitment", and claim that they're getting 500,000 app downloads a month.

SparcStart: As the copy says, "Passive candidates aren’t looking at job boards." Ok. But apparently they are looking at jobs sent through the SparcStart marketing system - what they call a 'MatchClick' posting, with videos from the employer, salary, etc. They are also integrated with eQuest.

Talify: Talify targets college grads looking for their first jobs - primarily by having the grads create profiles, then matching them to jobs. This job board, from Kiosite, is one half of a recruiting service they provide (the other being HireTrue, an ATS-like screening tool). There is also some candidate coaching in there, and a few other things I probably missed. The college grad market is crowded!

CareersUnbound: CareersUnbound is a people aggregator - they gather up candidate profiles, analyze them via a tool called instaTalent, then ranks them for job fit. At this point they are focusing on IT, healthcare, and business candidates. Interesting.

Funzi: Good name! This Finnish startup focusing on delivering job seeker training via mobile devices. As they say, "courses are delivered like a pack of cards broken down into smaller, easily understood and digestible sections." The content is still pretty limited, but it seems like a great platform.

Wow. As you can, there is no shortage of ideas or services out there. Until the next time around, I will be keeping my eyes open!
Is job matching really here? Umm, well, ahem....tag:recruitingblogs.com,2016-04-05:502551:BlogPost:19563772016-04-05T12:30:00.000ZJeff Dickey-Chasinshttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/JeffDickeyChasins

You know - personal jetpacks, StarTrek transporters, self-cleaning litter boxes - and during my young adulthood (now sadly long past) I often indulged in buying 'gadgets'. They promised the world - but when I actually tore off the packaging and started using them, I was invariably disappointed. The relationship between the picture on the outside and the reality of the product inside was often tenuous - at best. (NOTE: this does not hold for great albums, which often surpassed my expectations despite mediocre packaging. But that's another post.)

Which brings me to matching. Back in 2010, I wondered if matching (as in job-to-candidate, candidate-to-job, or candidate-to-company) would ever actually happen. With my usual sunny optimism, I opined that it probably wouldn't.

Then in 2013, I learned of eHarmony's plans for a matching job board (NOTE: full disclosure, I did some consulting work with them during the conceptual phase of the project). I saw Dr. Steve Carter (twice!) talk about the thinking behind the planned site. I was not alone in thinking that for once, matching seemed to have a chance. The eHarmony folks were eminently qualified in data science, had lots of bucks, and a clear plan.

Here's the thing about matching, though: no matter how you define it, it's hard. It requires a lot of data to work - from both candidates and employers. It requires time from both sides to generate that data. It requires some serious number crunching. And - toughest of all - it's trying predict what one unique person (you, for example) really want to do with your life - and then find the company AND job that can deliver for you.

Wouldn't it be cool if something like that existed?

Yeah, well...it would. But I'm not sure we're there yet. Maybe we're a few more steps down the road. However, ElevatedCareers stumbles where so many have before - it takes too much time from the candidate. Thirty minutes...forty minutes...I bailed at forty-two. This is, I think, where job hunting is not like dating. In the latter, if you're high-minded, you're looking for a life partner (and if you're low-minded, you are trying to fill a basic physical need) - and this means you are will to spend a lot of time inputting data. (Or maybe not - Tindr's swiping model seems pretty darn popular).

And if you're looking for a job? Well, you have lots of options - your friends, your professional network, dozens or hundreds of relevant job boards, social media, your mother, and the local grocery bulletin board. None of them are going to take 40+ minutes of your life just to get started (well, ok, maybe your mother).

So what can I say? I applaud eHarmony for making the effort (as I do all of those other companies in the matching space). I hope that incremental improvement over time will yield a product or process that is useful for the average Joe or Joey. And I hope that a year from now, you are holding up this post as an example of my ignorance.

I'm sure LinkedIn welcomed Daylight Savings Time as a chance to turn the clock forward and get past the last few months. So let's see what's happened:

Staff Finder lands some cash: Staff Finder, the European on-demand marketplace for temporary staffing, has closed a funding round led by One Peak Partners and Goldman Sachs Private Capital. Terms of the investment aren’t being disclosed, but the round is in the region of €20 million. The Zurich, Switzerland company says the new capital — its first institutional investment since being founded in 2011 — will be used for international expansion.

The site is the largest job board in Russia. In FY15 HeadHunter’s revenue remained broadly flat, decreasing 1.5% to RUR 3,055 million. Curious to see what happens next.

The LinkedIn-Snagajob partnership comes on the heels of a massive venture capital round for Snagajob, as it attracted $100 million from Rho Acceleration, NewSpring Capital and the Invus Group earlier this month. Interesting.

I did my last round up in September 2015, which is like 50 years in our industry. Sites have been bought and sold, the big boys are preparing their quarterly and annual reports....and a lot of recruiting sites have surfaced. Let's take a look:

Pymetrics: As the home page says, Pymetrics wants you to 'play games to find your best fit job'. I did - and it was kinda fun. Even more interesting was the fact that the results more or less matched up with my 'actual self'. The big question for this matching site (as is often the case): how many candidates will spend an hour or more (as I did) playing games?

JobSuitors: Although still in beta, JobSuitors claims to be able to take your info and match you to the right job using big data. Sound familiar? Umm - yes. But perhaps they have the 'secret sauce'. We'll see.

Lytmus: This assessment platform has three core tools: Phone Screen, where the employer watches the candidate do some actual coding; Qualify, which sound like coding tests; and Showcase - essentially an online career fair. Lytmus is aimed at tech folks (naturally!). I'll be interested to see where it goes.

Lensa: Did I say games? Well, Lensa has you play a video game to find your next job. For us word-oriented types, this was a challenge. But maybe it works for millennials?

Honeypot: No games here. Honeypot follows a somewhat tried and true path set out by Hired: the tech candidate fills out a profile, someone at Honeypot reviews it, and then matches it to an employer's opening. Employers pay when they hire someone. Not so sure about the name.

JobzLab: JobzLab calls itself "the first social referral market-network ecosystem". In other words, it's a referral network with bounties, social sharing, and a few other quirks. I'm not sure it's "a radical social recruiting tool box" - but if enough engineers get on it, it might work.

Nudj: Maybe it's me, but the name is a little iffy, don't you think? Anyway, Nudj is a peer recommendation app - you load it on your mobile device, then start recommending your friends (and foes?) for jobs. It's aimed at startups - but it wasn't clear to me what the incentive was for users to refer their friends.

Clinch: This recruitment marketing platform from Ireland lets you building landing pages, track candidates, and distribute job ads to different sites. It has plenty of competition (think Smashfly, Entelo, etc.), but Matt Charney likes it - so who knows?

Reload: Like Clinch, this is more of a hiring platform than a recruiting site - but since the lines are blurring, I thought I'd include it. Reload is a 'visual hiring tool' that includes job ad distribution, a referral system, and an ATS. Also includes a browser extension, which seems to be a 'thing' with several new launches.

TalentSky: TalentSky says they are "the world's first professional skills network." Hmm. At any rate, the platform lets candidates 'tell their story' via videos, documents, etc. - which employers then either use to contact them, or follow them. Nice explanatory videos, but it didn't seem different from many other 'networks' out there.

Phenompeople: They call themselves 'the world's first Talent Relationship Marketing Platform'. Really? I don't think so. Nonetheless, Phenompeople has a number of modules to create career sites, manage ad campaigns, do content marketing, and even enable mobile apply.

HourlyNerd: It's another freelancer site, but HourlyNerd focuses on providing business consultants that can build business plans, research markets, provide valuations, and create pricing strategies. Hey, this sounds like the JobBoardDoctor!

Somewhere: Another twist on networking. Somewhere has you create a 'visual CV', participate in community discussions, and give up info about yourself. In the background, employers are branding themselves and hunting for new workers. An iffy name, but an interesting twist on existing sites like LinkedIn and GlassDoor.

One thing I can promise - I will be back in a month or so with even more new sites!
What happened in 2015: job boards, recruiting sites, and....moneytag:recruitingblogs.com,2015-12-08:502551:BlogPost:19342672015-12-08T13:30:00.000ZJeff Dickey-Chasinshttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/JeffDickeyChasins

StepStone operates as a complement to Blocket Jobb, the jobs vertical of general classifieds platform Blocket.se, the dominating general classifieds site in Sweden.

And from France, Clustree!: French startup Clustree has just raised a new funding round of $2.9 million (€2.5 million) with Alven Capital and business angels. Clustree automagically finds the right person for the right position within big companies using big data. Referrals are a key hiring source, but internal referrals have gotten less attention, so Clustree shows some promise.

Connectifier lands more cash: Connectifier announced that the company had closed a Series B round of funding in the amount of $6 million -- bringing its total funding to date to $12 million. The company essentially crawls millions of pages of social networks and other sites that post public information from individuals, and about individuals, to build profiles of people, using a host of algorithms to sift out older pieces of info to give more emphasis to current information to improve accuracy.

TopEngineer launches: Talenetic, the latest startup of brothers Keith, Graham and Eric Potts, founders of Jobsite.co.uk, launched TopEngineer.com, an aggregator focused on matching engineers with relevant jobs around the world. This launch follows in the steps of Oilfinity.com, a jobs site is aimed at the global energy market. What's next?

LinkedIn settles: LinkedIn announced that it has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit over sending unwanted emails. The lawsuit revolves around LinkedIn's Add Connections feature, which would send out connection requests to people in a user's contact list who did not already have a LinkedIn account. It will pay at least $13 million into a fund to make payments to LinkedIn users who qualify for the suit. Seriously, guys, for LI, that's chump change! In other LI news, they have launched Referrals, a way for companies to automate the process of tapping into their existing employee networks to hire new people. Also, LinkedIn’s Q3 2015 results were up in every category, including an impressive 37 percent increase in worldwide revenue to $780 million.

Monster Q3 revenue down: Monster's Q3 2015 revenue of $167.1 Million was flat sequentially, and down 3% Year over Year. North American revenue dropped 4%. I guess there's no way to make that sound positive.

I did my last round up of new job boards and recruiting sites a few months back – and here I am again with a new list. Let’s take a look at these newbies and (perhaps) not-so-newbies:

HigherMe: Wading into the hourly and retail labor market, HigherMe offers to ‘match’ candidates to jobs – and even automatically apply to jobs for the candidate. A few interesting twists: candidates are encouraged to record a video intro, and HigherMe does some psychometric testing to help in the matching process. Interesting.

Beamery: Normally I don’t include products that don’t quite exist, but I’m making an exception for Beamery. Why? Because it is (yet another) recruitment marketing platform. We’ve seen a number of these come out over the past few years, and I expect more. I think traditional job boards can learn a lot from looking at platforms like Bullhorn, Smashfly, etc. Now you can add Beamery to the list. Oh, and here’s another one. Um…and another one.

Reflik: Turn your social media connections into big cash! That’s the basic premise of Reflik, a referral platform that encourages candidates to refer their friends for cash bonuses, and recruiters to use the site to find their next hire. Reflik can also be used as a ‘closed’ system, limiting access to a specific company. (Oh – and here’s another referral site).

HipHire: In addition to taking a jab at ‘sketchy, old school job boards’, HipHire focuses exclusively on part-time jobs. The interesting twist: employers pay on an increasing scale for candidates that ‘match’ their jobs, from $2.50 for a ‘fair connection’ to $7.50 for the ‘best connection’.

ZynCareers: It’s a…..matching site! Promising to help candidates ‘find their happy place’, ZynCareers puts candidates through a series of 53(!) questions (nice graphics), at the end of which you are matched to a bunch of employers. Unusual features include a ‘rate the employer’ survey and ‘guru consultation’ on interviews, resumes, etc. The company has an impressive roster of advisors. We’ll see how it plays out.

SkillGigs: The self-described ‘job auction’ site encourages candidates to set up a ‘3D resume’ – basically a resume with graphics. SkillGigs also using some type of matching technology to link employers to candidates in the healthcare and tech industries. Employers pay either 10% of the candidate’s salary in one payment, or 1% in 15 monthly payments – and they get to use the SkillGigs Robo Recruiter!

Universal Avenue: Ok, this one is different – Universal Avenue is an on-demand app/marketplace for ‘brand ambassadors’ (i.e., salespeople) to work on a gig basis for employers needing sales and marketing help. The Swedish startup is particularly focused on companies that are moving into new markets and want native salespeople – without incurring the fixed costs of hiring someone full time. Can a good salesperson do better using the service than he/she would do in a traditional job? I guess we’ll find out.

Makerbase: Not a recruiting site, really – but related. Makerbase is a place for ‘makers’ to show what they’ve done – whether it worked or not. As you might guess, it’s very tech-centric – but would be a logical place for recruiters to find candidates, and candidates to strut their stuff. Tech job boards like Dice should have something like this.

Remoot: Not sure about the name – but Remoot is an invitation-only community for job seekers that matches them to jobs and provides advice on resumes and offers. They claim to manually screen all members, and also provide some type of ATS for employers.

Varsidee: This test-based site has the employer create a ‘job Tryout’ that candidates must take – no resume or profile is submitted. Based on the results, the employer then makes a decision on further action. Varsidee also includes what looks like a light ATS to facilitate candidate communication and management.

Staffly: As its name implies, Staffly is actually a staffing site – specifically, for part-time workers in the retail industry. Staffly screens, pays, and insures its workers – and the system is very much mobile-focused. You will not be surprised to learn that it is based in San Francisco.

Whew! Amazing what 2 months generates in our industry, eh? I’ll check in later this year with what I am sure will be another round of interesting, unusual, and cool companies.

The transaction is scheduled to close Nov. 3. Wanted will be integrated into CEB’s predictive talent data offered through its CEB TalentNeuron offering, and its executives will remain with the company.

Now, Beyond, the job board network, and Udemy, a marketplace for online learning, have begun a partnership to add Udemy’s online skills-based courses. Interesting move.

On-demand staffing for the sharing economy: Wonolo, a San Francisco startup with an app that matches workers with available temp positions, has based much of its growth on the booming ecommerce sector, especially fulfillment and delivery operations. It currently has 8,000 Wonolers. That's their word. Really.

Greenhouse is growing: Greenhouse, a hiring software platform, has over 800 customers including Slack and Pinterest, almost double the 450 it had when it announced its $13.9 million Series B in March. That progress, plus dreams of international expansion and selling to even bigger corporations, has won Greenhouse another round that brings it to about $60 million in funding. Apparently someone is impressed.

From discussion platform to recruitment site: Piazza, a Palo Alto, Ca.-based class discussion platform, has more than 30,000 educators, 1 million students and 1,200 universities in 70 countries using its platform. It is now adding a “Reverse Engineer Your Top Hire” tool; the idea is for recruiting and hiring managers to input the names of their most successful collegiate hires and, based on those former students’ backgrounds, find current students who could be similarly successful in their careers. Very interesting.

Denmark's JobIndex is doing just fine: JobIndex's sales in Q2 2015 are up from DKK 57 million to DKK 66 million ($10.2 million U.S.) and the net profit before taxes and financials was DKK 19 million, compared to 11 million in Q2 in 2014. The only negative? The StepStone part of the business. It had sales of DKK 4.5 million but a loss of 0.6 million.

Job matching for doctors: Acculent Inc., a Frisco, Texas-based startup, has developed ExactMD.com, a Web-based matching system tailored to physicians.

There are 3 more 'Tindr for jobs' apps out there: nspHire, a Chicago-based job search app that launched in October 2014; New York City-based start-up Lynxsy; and New York based Switch. Job search app creators say matching with a company with an app interface, is aimed at fixing the soon to be out-dated method of applying online. Well, we'll see.

A big job board in Russia: HeadHunter (HH.ru), Russia’s leading jobs vertical, has become the world’s third most-visited jobs site on desktop visits, as measured by audience stats site SimilarWeb.com. With almost 30 million desktop visits in July 2015, HeadHunter is now only behind global U.S. platform Indeed.com (in first) and France’s Pole-Emploi.fr globally in the recruitment segment. Impressive traffic.

A LinkedIn for techies: That sounds like an elevator pitch, right? So without further ado, let's take a look at some of these contenders:

Industry: With a good logo, one of those omnipresent 'roll down the screen' home pages, and a stylish design, Industry is aiming to be the LinkedIn of the hospitality world. It claims 2500 job seekers and 300 restaurants as of July 1. Reminds me a bit of ShiftGig.

SwoopTalent: Call this one a 'people aggregator in a box'. SwoopTalent claims to have data-mined 160 million candidates and aggregated useful info about them - and they can also do the same for an employer's internal database of candidates. Seems like a good idea.

Planted: Planted (another 'roll down the screen' home page) focuses on creating a talent community for young professionals. Formerly known as Lynxsy (new name is an improvement, more or less), it seems to be serving primarily startups. One nice feature: job seekers get a bonus if they're hired via the site.

SpareHire: This site in the financial hiring sector is a bit like eLance (umm, guess I should say Upwork now) for financial whizzes. The consultants are vetted by the site, and the companies wanting to use them post a project - then wait for bids. Interesting twist on the usual model.

JobSamurai: JobSamurai wants to be your favorite job alert - just enter a job title and location. The site is a front-end for Recroup, which is a job ad platform. However...when I search for a marketing job, the most recent results were from 3 months ago. Ouch.

Jobbatical: The name is a combination of 'job' and 'sabbatical' - and "it means a professional career break where people use their skills and knowhow to work on an exciting project in a new team in a new environment." In other words, are you unemployed and want to get the heck out of Dodge? This may be your site.

Drafted: Another 'roll down the screen' site - do I sound cranky about this? - that promises big bucks from referrals. Companies post jobs, set a 'reward' for the job, and then candidates work their networks to refer their friends.

Klujo: Ok, this 'scroll down' look is a thing. Question is, is it too much of a thing? Anyway - Klujo is a 'candidate engagement' tool - a Facebook app - for employers that uses gamification for screening. Looks good - curious to hear how it works for employers.

Landing.jobs: Landing.jobs focuses on the tech sector, and they say "we believe that recruitment in tech is fundamentally broken." Ok. So what do they do? The Portuguese-based site has you upload your profile, refer your friends - and if an employer hires you, they pay 1% of your salary as a fee. Hmm. Sounds liked Hired.com to me.

Talent.io: Speaking of sites that focus on the tech sector, want your referrals, and pay on hire - there's Talent.io. One difference from Landing.jobs - they focus on the European tech community.

Triplebyte: These folks get the JobBoardDoctor award for most interesting yet still on target name. And talk about focus - Triplebyte is for engineers seeking jobs at Y Combinator startups. Plus, don't forget: "Programmer interviews are broken."

Haystack.jobs: No, this is not a site for job-seeking farmers. Haystack.jobs is a recruiting platform that resembles SmartRecruiters and other recent startups: job posting, simple ATS, screening questions, and...job seekers can upload a 60-second video of themselves.

Hotlrs: This site also focuses on the hospitality industry - specifically, hotels, resorts, and cruises. It promises to put job seekers in 'direct contact' with industry recruiters. Scroll down? Check

WorkingNotWorking: A 'curated' site of freelancers in the creative industry. Employers pay a flat membership fee to access the freelancers. And yes, they also have a (very long) 'scroll down' home page. Not so creative, I think.

Well, that's plenty for this round. As you can see, online recruiting has lotsa startups these days. A word to the wise, though: please reconsider that 'scroll down' design - it's gonna date you as totally 2015!
Whazzup? Not surprisingly, LinkedIn makes an appearance - but there are some other surprises. Let's check it out:

Monster goes a-branding: Monster is going after millennials with a new branding campaign featuring a singing zoologist, a dancing real-estate agent, and a cricket farmer (the insect, not the game). Well, why not?

GlassDoor adds new feature: Glassdoor has launched Company Updates, a social recruiting tool that allows companies to post real-time messages on their Glassdoor profile page to target potential recruits. The Company Updates feature is available for free to any employer with a Glassdoor Free Employer Account. Smart move.

LinkedIn buys stuff: LinkedIn has been making a push into the area of anticipatory computing, where its platform effectively predict what information you need to know, when you need it. To that end, the company has acquired and will be closing down Refresh.io, a startup and iOS app of the same name that surfaces insights about people in your networks right before you meet them. LinkedIn also spent $1.5 billion (yes, billion) to acquire Lynda.com, the online learning company founded in 1995 by technical skill instructional book author Lynda Weinman and co-founder Bruce Heavin. Who's next?

A more exclusive 'LinkedIn'?: Now there is a social network just for the time-starved and wealthy, maintained and updated by a team of experts. It costs £1,000 (around $1,500) a year to join. The new service, The Marque (pronounced ‘mark’) already has 50 founding members who range from asset managers like Tristan Capital Partners CEO Ric Lewis, to Nadja Swarovski, a board member at her family crystal business Swarovski.

Jobcase tackles LinkedIn: Jobcase aims to be a career network for those who don't 'fit in' with LinkedIn. “We’re very focused on the demographic that doesn’t have the traditional resume (or) the four-year degree, but still have career and job experience and needs a place where they can look for help with their career,” says Fred Goff, founder. Ok, we'll see.

JobTarget partners with CareerArc: JobTarget customers can now post into the social media world via CareerArc's TweetMyJobs. This means jobs can go out via 11,000 targeted Twitter feeds and other social media channels. Interesting.

Freelancer on the move: Freelancer has been busy lately. First, they acquired the assets of Projectlnkr, a Barcelona-based classified job board aimed at the Spanish-speaking freelance market. Then they launched a marketplace for local plumbers, cleaners, cooks, couriers and others to offer their services on demand in their vicinity, starting first in its home market of Australia before expanding globally this quarter.

Has anything affected your business? Let's find out:

LinkedIn limits API usage: LinkedIn is restricting access to most of its application programming interfaces (APIs) to companies that have struck up partnerships with the social networking company. Recruiting startups that rely on the LI API, beware! Also, in other news, LI bought Careerify - although it's a bit fuzzy on what it will do with it.

Greenhouse picks up some more investment: Greenhouse, the recruiting platform that includes candidate aggregation and predictive analytics, has landed $13.6M Series B funding from Benchmark. Interesting product.

Job board growth in China: Zhaopin Ltd, operator of one of China’s leading job boards, said its expanding market share among small businesses drove much of the growth in its second quarter, which ended on Dec. 31. Total revenue increased by 18.7 percent to RMB341.8 million (US$55.1 million), exceeding the upper end of the company’s revenue guidance by RMB 6.8 million ($1.1 million). In other news, 51Job saw an 11.9% rise in Q4 revenue from the previous year. I suspect we will see more of this.

Workable picks up some dollars: Workable has secured $5 million in additional funding from its existing investors, including Greylock Israel (which has since become 83North) and Greece-based seed investors Openfund. Workable enables smaller companies to post to multiple jobs boards, review candidates and schedule interviews.

Weedhire begins charging: WeedHire International (OTCQB:WDHR) announced that effective April 2, 2015 will be charging $4.20 per 30 day job posting. I'm not sure if this is newsworthy, but I though it was noteworthy!

More 'Tinder for Jobs' news: There are a lot of 'swipe and hire' startups right now; the latest is Super, which just picked up CrunchCommerce. Super was first launched in the middle of 2014 as a resume builder. It crossed 250k downloads soon and expanding in vision, the app was upgraded to act as a job hunting tool on mobile. With help from then parent company CrowdFire, Super got more then 100 high profile startups as recruiters and launched the tinder for jobs. Today, the app has crossed 500k downloads and finding jobs has become the core.

Don't believe me? Take an inventory of articles published in the last 12 months that focus on something new that will 'revolutionize' recruiting and leave all existing technologies/methods/disciplines in shambles. (This of course also applies to pretty much any industry you can think of, be it software, banking, or bagels). The articles always focus on the 'new'. Not the old. 9 out of 10 dentists can't be wrong - right?

Thus the title: job boards are the email of the recruiting world. Here's why:

Email is old. So are job boards; they've been around since the (gasp!) 1990s. See above comment on the value of new vs. old

No matter how hard vendors try, email just won't die. Ditto for job boards - they continue to be one of the top 2 sources of external hires for companies.

Almost everyone uses email. Same with job boards; almost every employer uses them as part of their recruiting 'toolbox'.

Email gets no respect. Need I point out the same for job boards?

Email remains incredibly effective for communication and marketing. Job boards remain incredibly effective for reaching and landing candidates.

Email has evolved. So have job boards.

Email isn't going away - it fills critical business needs (communication, documentation, marketing) efficiently and cost-effectively. Job boards aren't going away - they continue to provide a cost-effective way of branding employers, sourcing candidates, and filling open positions.

So new is always better than old. Except, I guess, when it isn't.
New recruiting sites: the startups just keep comingtag:recruitingblogs.com,2015-02-24:502551:BlogPost:18659702015-02-24T13:30:00.000ZJeff Dickey-Chasinshttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/JeffDickeyChasins

I admit - even after doing these roundups of new and unusual recruiting-related sites for many years - it's a bit overwhelming. Last time out, I pointed out 8 sites that I thought were pretty interesting. Well, it's barely 3 months later and I have a new batch - and trust me when I say this only represents a fraction of the sites I've bookmarked! It's impressive, amazing, and a testament to the vitality of the online recruiting industry. So let's get to it:

Potknox: Gotta love the name. This is a cloud-based screening system for tech candidates. They claim to combine the standard online skills testing with psychometric testing, so that you get the best of the best. This is, of course, a crowded field - can we say TrueAbility, Codility, Gild, etc.?

PowerToFly: This site provides vetted female developers to companies worldwide. In essence, it's a narrowly focused staffing company with a twist. All positions are remote, and hours worked are determined by the developer. Interesting.

RaiseYourFlag: One of the more unusual sites I've seen, RaiseYourFlag focuses on career paths - how a candidate can get from point A to point B. These paths are (of course) also connected to real jobs, which the candidate can apply for - and another nice feature is how related jobs are shown as well. An unusual approach to a common problem.

10MinutesWith: This site focuses on college grads, providing them with video interviews from various employers (broken out by category), a forum-like area for career Q&A, and (of course) job postings. 10MinutesWith is currently focused on London, Bejing, and Singapore - but I'm sure they'll be expanding.

Switch: You knew I couldn't do one of these roundups without at least one matching site - so Switch is it. The tech-focused app (iOS only) is 'Tinder for jobs' - in other words, you browse jobs, swipe the ones you like, and have wild crazy... um, no, you connect with hiring managers.

InterviewJet: Tech folks 'apply' for membership, are screened, and then presented to employers. Sounds a little like a recruiting company, eh? But those interview 'flights' are taking off soon!

Hackajob: This site (again focused on tech) asks candidates to perform a 'hack' - basically a development test. You get scored, you rise on the leaderboard - and hopefully an employer will notice. The Darwinian approach to hiring!

Hackerslist: Similar name, different site. Hackerslist claims to offer access to 'professional' hackers for those unusual and perhaps discrete development jobs you need done every now and then.

Glints: A site targeting internships, with an application tracking tool for candidates, and claiming to offer only curated positions. This Singapore-based startup has 8000 candidates, but is still building an inventory of jobs from what I could see.

How long will the onslaught of startups continue? Who knows - but I'm having a blast covering it! Keep 'em coming!!
GlassDoor, Monster, StackOverflow, and other news of the online recruiting biztag:recruitingblogs.com,2015-02-17:502551:BlogPost:18647892015-02-17T13:30:00.000ZJeff Dickey-Chasinshttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/JeffDickeyChasins

StackOverflow cranks up: StackOverflow, the Q & A site for developers, has landed $40M in funding. Its Energy and Healthcare segments showed the best 2014 boost in revenue, with Energy up 30 percent year over year (YOY), and healthcare revenue more than twice that of 2013.

Match-Click launches: A new startup has launched that focuses on the creation of attractive job postings and related content - saving the candidate collection for later. The service is intended to fill entry-level to mid-level professional positions, with salaries ranging from $75,000 to $150,000.

Though the company hasn't yet publicly filed for an initial public offering, that's clearly the plan. I'm shocked, just shocked!

Monster's numbers hurt by overseas activity: The financial health of Monster Worldwide, the owner of Monster sites in North America, Europe and Asia, deteriorated further in FY2014 from FY2013. But, if it wasn’t for a massive goodwill writedown (forced onto the company by a shrinking market capitalization) and weaker euro, the report card would have looked very different. Total revenue dropped to $770M, down from $808M in 2013.

Employment levels, unemployment rates, growth projections, job listings, and the abundance of high-paying new jobs are all important factors in the ranking.

LinkedIn has a very good year: LinkedIn reported another winning quarter this afternoon, bringing in $643 million in the last three months of 2014, with recruiting sales accounting for 57.4 percent of the total. Just think - this time next year, you can let me know how wrong I was! So, without further ado, here are my 7 predictions for the big trends shaping our industry next year:

Talent shortages and mismatches: The economy, while not red hot, has gotten warm enough to cause significant shortages in certain types of people in certain locations - think welders, CNC operators, nurses, technologists, and more. Jobs are going unfilled in many areas of the country. Another factor - unrealistic and over-restrictive expectations by employers for the 'ideal candidate'. This is a problem for employers - and an opportunity for job boards.

Diversity matters more than ever: Sure that the recent headlines over lack of diversity in the technology industry are yesterday's news? Think again. Many employers want a more diverse workforce - and they need help getting it. Some are even willing to pay for it.

Job hopping makes retention a big issue: With the recession in the rear-view mirror, many candidates are now quitting their so-so jobs in search of something better. This of course is refocusing employers on how to retain the employees they have. They need tools to help them with retention. Where will they get them?

Employer brand matters: As the latest LinkedIn Global Trends survey indicates, 75% of recruiters say that the employer brand has a significant impact on hiring success. Interestingly enough, job boards typically offer some of the best tools to brand employers for candidates.

It's mobile, stupid: Believe it or not, less than 30% of major companies provide mobile versions of their career sites - even though 50%+ of candidates are now searching for work on mobile devices. Employers need help in becoming mobile - and they need it from trusted recruitment partners such as their job boards

Data matters: Big data is slowly moving out of the realm of theory and into the real world. Real time analysis of large data sets produced by job boards is already providing useful information on how, where, and when to place job postings. Expect significant growth in this area for 2015.

More spending on recruitment and retention: Every item above means that employers will be spending more money than ever before on finding, assessing, hiring, and retaining candidates.

Perhaps these trends also explain the explosion in investment we've seen during the past twelve months for the job board industry. One thing is for certain: these trends will affect each and every one of us, whether we want them to or not. So get ready!
Expand your mind: lotsa new and unusual recruiting sites and servicestag:recruitingblogs.com,2014-11-25:502551:BlogPost:18449012014-11-25T15:06:38.000ZJeff Dickey-Chasinshttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/JeffDickeyChasins

Theoretically, I shouldn't be doing another roundup of new sites so quickly after the last one - but you know what? There is so much happening in our industry right now, I thought, to heck with that! I'm gonna do another one anyway! So join me as I take a look at some of the most interesting new-ish services and sites I've seen in the past couple of months:

Workshape.io: The brainchild of Hung Lee, a friend from the UK recruiting biz, Workshape.io takes a visual approach to matching tech candidates to jobs. You take a minute or so to enter what you do (and how much you like what you do); the site builds a shape that is superimposed over the 'shapes' of various jobs. Hard to describe, but pretty intuitive when you use it. Worth a look.

LearnUp: Interesting take on an online learning platform: candidates take various training courses (3-10 minutes). Then LearnUp takes the results and connects candidates to specific employers. It's been around a couple of years, has managed to attracted funding, and thus seems to have a chance of making it, IMO.

TalkPush: This is an automated phone screening service - which seems like it would be a good fit with pretty much any ATS or job board. When candidates apply to a job, they're sent to the TalkPush platform, where they answer a set of questions created by the employer; their answers can be screened by HR, recruiting, and hiring managers. Similar to video interviewing products I've seen, but perhaps more efficient because it's phone-based.

TenLegs: Another entry in the freelancer/design category, TenLegs is interesting because it focuses on how artists and schools can build specific communities for their work (as well as the usual portfolios, etc.). And yes, it has a job board.

Boon: It's another referral network! Boon includes the ability to reward referrals with cold, hard cash, and points out that it can be used for not only hiring but affiliate marketing, non-profits, and charities. Intriguing.

MindSumo: I don't why, but there seems to be a mini-boom in sites targeting college students and recent grads. MindSumo is a good example: employers can pose 'problems' that students must solve; based on the results, either internships or hiring can result.

Poachee: No, it's not an app for hiring eggs, but instead a way that recruiters can 'poach' currently employed candidates. Candidates are anonymous. Catch? It's based in Germany and most of the action seems to be there as well.

GraduateLand: Did someone say college students? Another European startup (Denmark), GraduateLand follows the model of profiles, jobs, and matching. Nothing unusual - but they've been continuously expanding since inception, so something must be working.

Jobfully: Let's end with a service that is focused on the candidate. Jobfully provides the candidate with a job search roadmap, video coaching, and other tools to make the job hunt more focused and effective. It's not cheap ($499 for the Premium package) but it may be just what some candidates need.

Interesting stuff, eh? I can guarantee that in another few months I'll be able to bring you even more cool startups. Our industry seems to be thriving!
So what about those Indeed TV Ads?tag:recruitingblogs.com,2014-11-18:502551:BlogPost:18422152014-11-18T13:56:33.000ZJeff Dickey-Chasinshttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/JeffDickeyChasins

Remember when LinkedIn used to say it wasn't a job board? Oh, wait - I guess they still do. Yet if you ask a room of HR professionals that question, the answer is crystal clear: "Of course LinkedIn is a job board!"

Well, I would argue that Indeed is going through something similar. Launched in 2004, the site for many years defined what a job aggregator was: a site that aggregated the majority of its jobs from job boards, and generated the majority of its revenue from those same job boards (and don't get me started on why job boards ever allowed this in the first place!). Then about 3 years ago, things began to change: job boards were dropped from the site, and in their place was job content scraped directly from employer web sites. A bit later, the reason became clear: the Indeed sales team was calling on employers directly, selling their PPC services to job board clients.

Then Indeed added resumes, and a few months ago, they launched major market television campaigns in the U.K. and the U.S. Does this sound like some other major sites that tend to call themselves job boards?

Um, yes.

If you're running TV ads and your sales team is targeting every employer in North America, you're a job board. I even heard them on the radio yesterday as a sponsor of NPR's All Things Considered. You may use aggregation as the method for acquiring your job content, but the traditional definition of aggregator no longer fits. Should the traditional definition should be retired? Maybe so. Of course, that leaves sites like Juju, Jobs2Careers, TopUSAJobs, etc. out in the cold.

Should job boards operating in markets outside North America expect Indeed to change its business model? Yes.

So get ready. Your current partner will soon be your biggest competitor.

JobBoardFinder.net migrates into North America: JobBoardFinder.net, an international recruiting startup created by Rillieux-La-Pape, France-based Aktor Interactive, helps candidates find the right job sites to help their career quest and job search. It is expanding into North and South America as of the end of September. It's free for job boards to register.

It will enter a crowded market, led by Snagajob. The extra funding will probably help.

Recruit plans its IPO: Japan's largest recruitment company Recruit Holdings said it is planning an initial public offering worth $1.8 billion, which will test investor appetite for big Tokyo listings after some weak debuts this year. The IPO will help Recruit pay for future acquisitions as the company, one of the world's top five staffing firms, seeks to become the world's biggest by 2020. You may remember that Recruit purchased Indeed a few years back. Who's next?

SpareHire lands some funding: SpareHire, the New York City-based startup that puts finance and consulting professionals with firms who need their services on a short-term basis, has just landed $750,000 from undisclosed angel investors.
Remember BranchOut? They're still here - for now: BranchOut is in discussions with several acquirers in the recruiting space for its main team, product and data, though that may take a little time and the main product will run until then. It’s in late-stage talks with the Hearst Corporation to sell its mobile team that built enterprise chat app Talk.co. BranchOut‘s story is a brutal lesson about the risk of derailment when you build on someone else’s platform. After raising $49 million and growing to 33 million users, Facebook changed its viral channels leading BranchOut to starve. Pay heed, those who depend on LinkedIn!

Does Jobvite need more money? CEO Dan Finnigan says the funding will be used not to diversify into other areas of human resources — as some of its competitors have done — but to double down on its approach to recruitment.

CampusJobs lands some cash: Campus Job, though revenue positive from day one, has raised $968k in seed investment led by Box Group, with participation from Lerer Ventures, Kal Vepuri, F Cubed, and Red Sea, among others. The site acts as a marketplace, connecting students in post-secondary school with companies and organizations that are looking to employ students in part-time or temporary positions, namely campus rep positions.

And another part-time college-focused service: A tool that recently launched from the Techstars Accelerator program in New York is Lynxsy, which aims to connect recent college graduates with companies in part-time positions so that job-seekers and employers can try before they commit to applicants for a full-time position. So far, Lynxsy has 100 companies and 5,000 candidates on its platform. The New York-based service has partnered with 15 universities in the Northeast including schools like New York University, The University of Pennsylvania, Bentley College, Cornell University, Vanderbilt University, Georgetown University and more.

And another college-focused service (!): 10 Minutes With, a London-headquartered startup that offers a career matchmaking platform for graduates to help them learn about different career paths and be contacted by and network with companies and executives, has raised $4 million to accelerate growth worldwide — including a forthcoming U.S. push within the next few months. I predict another 'college-focused service' before my next roundup.

This study asked about how job boards really use aggregators, which ones they actually use, and what their plans were for future use. The response was phenomenal! .

The responses provided some interesting insights into the role of aggregators in the job board industry. As everyone knows, less than a decade ago aggregators first appeared on the scene. Now there are dozens of them around the world, and they've become integral to many job boards' (and employers') recruiting efforts.

Let's take a quick look at what we found out:

Over 3/4 of respondents are currently using aggregator services (either paid or unpaid)

Indeed, SimplyHired, Juju, ZipRecruiter, and JobG8 are the top choices in terms of use

The top aggregators in terms of generating revenue for job boards were RealMatch, JobG8, BurningGlass, Juju, Indeed, and TopUSAJobs

Most job boards are spending less than $12K annually on aggregators - but a substantial minority are spending more than $250K

Only 1/3 of general job boards are planning to increase their aggregator spend in the coming year - but over 2/3rds of niche sites (geographic) will increase their spend

LinkedIn's and Monster's recent decision to aggregate jobs seems to be of little concern to respondents

Gigats: The first thing you see on Gigats' home page is the registered user count (which was over 7 million when I took a look). As they say, "Gigats is not a job board; we are a job matching service". In other words, the candidate is going to get jobs via emails from multiple sources. Not revolutionary, but interesting that they have acquired so many job seekers so fast.

Raise Your Flag: Definitely a site with a non-traditional name. Raise Your Flag will certainly show you jobs - but it also shows you job paths: how to get from where you are to a specific target career. A good idea, and certainly could be helpful to less sophisticated (or simply confused) job seekers.

HackerRank: Not a recruiting site per se, HackerRank is actually an assessment site for programmers. The user picks an area they want to compete in, and then they are presented various problems to solve. On the employer side, of course, the site is used to assess and hire technical talent.

IdealCandidate: A LinkedIn-centric site for sales candidates. You sign in via LI, enter your desired compensation, pick your industry sector, run through a (time-consuming) culture-fit assessment, and then finally you see a profile and (hopefully) some matching jobs. Interesting approach, although I suspect the culture-fit piece is too long for most candidates to complete.

JobHive: An aggregator with a twist - videos. JobHive claims to index 2 million jobs. The candidate find the job they want, applies - and JobHive guarantees that the candidate will see what's happening with the application. And of course, you can apply via video (although it appears this function is not active yet).

TheCrowdWorks: As you might guess from the name, TheCrowdWorks is essentially a job board with a crowdsourcing piece that allows the candidate to answer questions from other candidates and then get badges. It still seems to be in beta (and confused about its name; it calls itself TheCrowdWorks, OurCrowdWorks, and CrowdWorks at various points in the site!).

HiredMD: It's a doctor job site! The one twist that HiredMD brings to the market is the concept of an auction: the candidate and employer can bid back and forth about salary, benefits, bonuses, and so on. I'll be curious to see where this one goes.

Every so often I like to look around and see who is actually doing something interesting in online recruiting...and surviving. So let's take a look:

Joberate: a recruitment marketing platform that includes predictive analytics (where should you put that job posting?) and 'on demand' marketing to multiple channels.

Foosle: a job board that has video interviewing 'baked in' to its offerings; also allows candidates to create video profiles.

Throng: OK, I'm cheating a bit here - Throng is not a site, but an app for job searching. It also includes a geolocation feature, as well as chat and semantic matching.

Entelo: It's another recruitment marketing platform, also with predictive analytics, plus some social data aggregation for candidate profiles and a special diversity sourcing tool.

Ascendify:Yep, another recruitment marketing platform (cloud-based) that also features mobile apply, a candidate nurturing tool, and a referrals tool.

Archinect: This is a community site focused on architects (it's been around since 1997). It has tons of content (much is user-generated), blogs, forums, and special areas devoted to competitions and academia. Plus jobs, of course.

Doximity: Another community site, this time focused on doctors. Doximity has attracted plenty of funding, and claims 1 in 3 doctors are members. Lets doctors get paid for second opinions, and also offers a HIPPA-compliant fax system.

WorkHands: This site focused on skilled trades (plumbers, electricians, etc.). They can build online or offline profiles/resumes, and also tap into product reviews, apprenticeships info, schools and training, and so on.

BetterWeekdays: A 'career management platform' for candidates; includes personal career coaching, assessment, and 'culture-informed' matching. Yep, candidates pay for this, too.

TheMuse: A job search site that is really all about company profiles with LOTS of videos and photos. Interesting twist: TheMuse actually does the work of creating the company videos.

Hired: A site focused on the tech industry; claims to accept only 5% of the candidates that apply to join. It's actually a recruiting agency that uses these candidates to fill jobs and charge 15%.

Smarterer/Flock: What a name. It's an assessment site (individuals or teams) that also includes training. I'm betting it will link assessments to hiring soon.

That's just a taste, by the way. Several services/sites changed their offerings/names/model during the three weeks I was doing research. A sign of the times! Take a look, see how they work, and if they give you ideas for your recruiting.
What is Monster doing now?
Once, in a world far, far away (i.e., the 1990s), Monster beat its chest and claimed to be the biggest and best source for online jobs in the world, bar none.

Then, last week, Monster - diminished, no longer for sale, and facing significant declines in revenue - once again beat its chest and said that it would be number one, again. Per Sal Iannuzzi, CEO President: "This is disruptive to every one of our competitors.”

So what does disruption look like? Well, kind of like what Monster's competitors are already doing:

Increase the number of jobs on Monster by tenfold

Aggregate content on candidates from everywhere on the web (no doubt through recent acquisition TalentBin) - and increase the number of candidates

Move to cloud-based solutions for employers

Add PPC

The result of this 'disruptive' behavior? More money. More stockholder value. And...Monster, once again king of the online recruiting world.

Wow.

So, back in the real world, what does this actually mean? If you're an employer of any size, expect to see some serious sale efforts from the Monster staff. If you're an investor, you'll get to see the Monster 'road show'. And if you're a candidate - well, maybe you'll see more advertising trying to lure you back.

If Monster had done this in, say, 2010, it might have had a disruptive effect. At that point, Indeed was still pivoting to become a full-fledged job board, people aggregation was in its infancy, and competition for employer-based PPC offering was nil. In 2014, things are different. Each 'disruptive' element of Monster's plan is relatively mature, with significant competition for each. Will the market look kindly on Monster's efforts? In the short term, yes. In the long term, it's all about sales. If they go up, then Monster's stock price should rise (maybe).

My take? Hmm. What's proposed is not bad - in fact, a lot of it makes sense - but it's pretty late in the game, and it's a stretch to call the efforts 'disruptive'. More like, 'well, we've tried everything else, let's give this a shot!'. All in all, it doesn't seem like a sure-fire recipe for success. One other factor: you can have the best plans in the world, but success relies on execution. From what I've seen thus far, the current Monster management team seems a bit weak in this area.

But, as I've said many times before, this is just one Job Board Doctor's opinion.

What's yours?
Evolution: The future of job boardstag:recruitingblogs.com,2014-05-13:502551:BlogPost:18042722014-05-13T12:30:00.000ZJeff Dickey-Chasinshttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/JeffDickeyChasins

I will be taking a tour of unusual and interesting sites that are moving the job board model forward. As you can guess, I've been looking at lots of different sites - and a number of things stand out:

Core functionality in many regards hasn't changed - these sites and services are still trying to connect candidates to employers (and vice versa). The difference is in the execution and (sometimes) presentation.

Matching technology - regardless of how well it works - is presented over and over as a differentiator for these sites.

Common barriers to success haven't changed much in 20 years - you still need to get the attention of enough candidates to generate interest from employers. Branding and SEO rule.

Niche focus continues to be a common element in many of these sites, regardless of their technology or products. Makes sense - going niche usually increases the likelihood of startup success.

Mobile is a given. Several of these sites only operate in the mobile world.

Design matters. I'm talking visual and functional design. The days are long gone where you can ignore the actual 'look and feel'; consider this the Apple effect.

I'll of course be delving into the specific sites in more depth during my talk, but one thing seems clear to me: there is no dearth of companies willing to tackle the challenge of online recruiting. If we judge the health of an industry by the number of startups springing up, then you have to believe that the job board industry is thriving! But remember - don't call these companies 'job boards'. That's <a title="What’s in a (job board) name?
