2015 has almost come to a close. While the holiday season is typically viewed as a more “quiet” time in the corporate world, it can also be a great opportunity for businesses to recruit top talent to hit the ground running for next year. To help reinvigorate your hiring drive and get a head start, here are some HR trends to keep an eye out for in 2016.

Data & Analytics: Ohr tver the past few years, the use of “Big Data” in HR has been widely talked about, but often rarely implemented. Companies are starting to turn the corner, however. Now it’s not just about gathering data. It’s about compiling and analyzing data and making actionable insight in hiring decisions and people strategies. One columnist recently noted that continuing to channel budget to sales, marketing and product development, while ignoring technological innovation in HR, is a huge mistake because “quality talent fuels growth.”

HR + Marketing & Social Media: Who owns a company’s brand and image? Marketing? HR? Both? And is there a difference between a company’s employer brand and their consumer image? Depends on who you ask. One thing is certain though…HR and marketing, and perhaps even members from the executive team, need to work together to create a cohesive brand message that attracts and helps retain top talent. And many organizations are doing just that. According to recent research, roughly 33% of organizations are taking branding into account during strategy development.

Boomerangs & Job Hoppers: Recent research shows that 76% of organizations are now more accepting of hiring boomerang workers (i.e. a worker who leaves the company only to return later). Furthermore, 55% of companies say they have hired a “job hopper” and 32% said they actually expect workers to job hop. In what is increasingly become a tightened labor market, companies will need to get creative with their recruiting strategy and that includes tapping both of these often overlooked segments of workers.

Millennials and Gen Z: Millennial workers now make up the largest percentage of the workforce. As more and more Baby Boomers retire, these Millennials will need to step into critical management and leadership roles. But many wonder if they are equipped with the necessary skills to do so. Adding to the mix will be the influx of the next generation of workers, dubbed Gen Z. These workers are even more technologically savvy than their predecessors, so companies need to keep that is mind when interacting with this group.

Workplace Flexibility: Parental leave has been splashed across the news the past few months. Between Netflix announcing an extending parental leave plan, following closely behind by Adobe and Microsoft, the makeup of the workplace is slowly, but surely, changing. And while more companies offer flexible work programs, like telecommuting or reduced scheduling, research has found that many employees aren’t taking advantage of said programs for fear of seeming less committed to their career. This stark divide is something companies of all sizes will need to address in order to attract and retain Millennial workers, many of whom are starting families and desperately need flexible work options.

The series, which is hosted by TechnologyAdvice’s Josh Bland, explores a variety of business and technology landscapes through conversations with industry leaders.

In this episode, we discuss the impact of mobile on recruiting, the growth of RPO, and best practices for onboarding.

Below are David Webb’s four biggest insights from the conversation.

BrightMove Onboarding integrates seamlessly with all of our applicant tracking products.

It’s all brandable. We can co-brand with our RPO partners or we can co-brand with their customers so that from the candidate experience it looks like they’re actually moving through a process at the HR department they’ve applied to. It’s all seamless and very customizable, and can pretty much fit any ongoing process that needs to be automated.

In 2008 we saw a really big shift from the availability of candidates in relation to the number of job openings.

For a while, the market was flooded with candidates because of the layoffs that our economy experienced. The main shift we’ve seen in the last year or two is that’s kind of equalizing again. Whereas before, if you were hiring, it was very much a buyer’s market for a good five years. And it’s now shifting toward where a candidate has a little bit more of the leverage.

There’s more opportunities, and there’s less candidates available right now. And the way we help our customers compensate with that is through HR software solutions, social media integration, and keeping that pool of qualified candidates ready to go and constantly connecting with them almost like a customer relationship management type relationship so that the time to hire and time to fill is cut down. The staffing agencies and the RPO companies are having to compete now, more than ever, for filling jobs quickly with quality candidates.

Most people interact with their friends, family, and colleagues with their phone and internet more than the desktop PC at this point.

I don’t think anybody would refute that. It’s very important, which is where SMS text messaging comes in. If you’re trying to get a candidate for a job and you need to get in touch with them, the difference between you hiring that candidate and not hiring them might be the difference between them getting a text message at 11 A.M. or waiting for them to get home and check their personal email at six or at the end of the day.

There’s a large initiative here to complete a BrightMove 13, which is a totally responsive application.

We have about half of the app left to convert. The web app will be responsive and look great on phones, tablets, and any size PC monitor you have. That’s a big initiative of ours. To me, it’s all about integration. And as a development company, it’s what we care about when we’re picking the tools that we want to use.

Integration between systems and being able to choose the best-of-breed of everything out there and having them work seamlessly together, that’s going to be the future.

This podcast was created and published by TechnologyAdvice. Interview conducted by Josh Bland.

A poor hiring decision costs time and money, both for your company and for the candidate. When you make the wrong choice, or fail to connect with your best applicant, everyone takes a step back. A bad hire can cost your company anywhere from one-third to one-half of the annual salary of the position. It pays to take advantage of tools to reduce costs and improve talent acquisition.

Using tech and social media reflects well on your brand. Within one company, many departments can make use of social media including HR, customer service, marketing, and public relations.

Video interviewing has come a long way.
Continued economic improvement means employers need to work harder to attract, recruit, and hire top talent. Are you making easily avoidable recruiting mistakes that impact your bottom line?

Recruiting is not what it used to be—and neither are the mistakes that trip up well-intentioned recruiters. As research advises businesses to focus more on harvesting external data to supplement the recruiting cycle, other problems arise when the “perfect fit” on paper just does not fit your company culture.

The biggest mistakes you can make in today’s recruiting environment

Technology like applicant tracking systems (ATS) makes life easier for HR and recruiting personnel. Job boards reach more deeply into desired talent spaces and better information is available to build comparative candidate profiles. Yet problems lurk within these developing processes.

When planning your human capital needs, think about these less obvious, but all-too-common, recruiting problems:

Whether you have one or five new employees, a sound, well-designed onboarding program creates compelling motivation for you—and your new hire—to get the most from this stage in the work lifecycle.

Why is onboarding important?

In an increasingly mobile workforce, job transition is common. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in 2014 the average length of time most employees had been with their current employer was just over four years. As we have discussed, Millennial workers generally expect to stay at a job for less than 3 years. These trends amplify the need for a good institutional onboarding experience.

There are many schools of thought on how to achieve this and everyone seems to have differing opinions on best practices and optimal techniques. Regardless of approach, when it comes to recruiting, it’s important to keep in mind that even the most well thought-out hiring process could be wasting valuable time (and candidates) if not done properly.

Why Hire an Employment Agency?

Since recruiting is their main focus, staffing agencies can tap into their expertise and network and make the candidate search much more efficient. Even if a company has a recruiting department, it can benefit from using an employment agency.
A data breach involving more than four million federal employees was announced in early June. The breach, involving the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), involved personnel records and security clearances.

During the breach, hackers gained access to the financial, health, and personnel files of members of the military, and others, who applied for government security clearances. In addition, sensitive information belonging to millions of friends and family members of clearance applicants was siphoned off in the hack. The stolen data could be used to identify specialists, scientists, and others operating covertly in foreign countries.

Earlier this year, investigators linked attacks on healthcare insurers Anthem, Premera Blue Cross, and CareFirst to Chinese hackers. The Anthem attack alone is believed to affect close to 80 million consumers. Even Donald Trump is not immune. Krebs on Security recently revealed that Trump Hotels suffered a data breach extending back months. And while the Target data breach of 2013 startled consumers and banks, the provision of free security monitoring to compromised consumers is now mainstream.

What can you do about it?

Businesses of all size are vulnerable to internal and external intruders. The vast security weaknesses evident in federal systems are mimicked each day in business, state, non-profit and other information technology (IT) systems.
