My daughter's first birthday is in a couple of weeks and I have to say that I'm taken aback at my reaction to her first year of life. Fatherhood is amazing.
Everyone thought that we were having a boy because of how my wife was carrying (we waited to find out), except for me. Something inside my soul told me that we were having a girl, and low and behold, almost a year ago she arrived and turned me and my wife into a family.
I could not love my daughter more than I do and know that there is nothing that I wouldn't do for her. Nothing in my life so far has shifted my priorities more than her birth and her life.
Everyday when I go to work I never have to ask myself why. My reasons for doing what I do are crystal clear.Linkedin...tag:recruitingblogs.com,2008-04-30:502551:BlogPost:1188072008-04-30T14:21:55.000ZDavid Sprinklehttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/DavidSprinkle
There is a lot of information out there about how to use Linkedin and I will admit that I've been slow to recognize the power of Linkedin.
About 6 weeks ago, I had about 20 direct connections with people that I knew well and quite frankly didn't see any advantage in Linkedin over the mulititude of social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and others...what was the point since I was already connected to my friends on Facebook.

And then I got clued in...one of my associates had LION in his name on Linkedin. Once I found out that it meant that he was an open networker and he was aggressively growing his network and what the benefit is to his sales and candidate sourcing, I immediately become hooked!

So, in the last 6 weeks I have grown my linked in network to over 1500 direct connections and over 8.7 million in my overall network. That's 8.7 million candidate profiles!!! I have their names, their titles, their companies and their location...GOLD.

How did I grow it? I changed my profile to notate that I'm an open networker (I get several invites everyday) and I joined as many groups as possible, especially Toplinked and LIONs and downloaded some lists of open-networkers and uploaded them into my account and mass emailed out invites.

Here are some of the benefits that my team and I have already gotten from this large network:
1. direct recruits for orders we are currently working on. these candidates were not actively looking, but now they are interviewing with our client!
2. we now routinely get past gate-keepers at target companies since we have the name of someone in the company...we are able to get to the decision makers and get the order!
3. referrals for people to join my team...I've got a new flow of internal candidates in my pipeline now!

The more I use it, the more I'm figuring out ways to help my business. I'm definitely still learning but I did want to share what I've learned so far!!!

By the way, if you'd like to connect to my network on Linkedin, my profile can be found at: http://www.linkedin.com/in/davidsprinkle :)Tax day...I filed on time this year!!!tag:recruitingblogs.com,2008-04-15:502551:BlogPost:1060932008-04-15T21:49:15.000ZDavid Sprinklehttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/DavidSprinkle
Last year wasn't a fluke for me...I did it again...I filed my taxes on time this year! This may not seem like a great feat, but I used to be notorious for procrastinating on my taxes and filing an extension.

What's been the difference for me, you ask? Well, I got married in 2005 and my wife was not about to let me procrastinate and let the government keep our refund (yes we got one again, which means I need to adjust my W4...). My wife holds me accountable and I love her for it (though…

Well, I got married in 2005 and my wife was not about to let me procrastinate and let the government keep our refund (yes we got one again, which means I need to adjust my W4...). My wife holds me accountable and I love her for it (though sometimes I don't like it!).

So, all you recruiters out there, if you are like me and are prone to procrastinate, find someone that will hold you accountable. If you can't make yourself get on the phones, find someone who will get you to do it...could be your manager, could be your peer, could be your spouse....if they care about you they will help you by holding you accountable.

Thank God for my wife!!!
Happy Tax Day. :)Economy, economy, economy...it's time to get positive!tag:recruitingblogs.com,2008-04-03:502551:BlogPost:947812008-04-03T15:10:05.000ZDavid Sprinklehttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/DavidSprinkle
Ok, I've got to say that I'm a little tired of hearing about the economy on the news. Newspapers and TV news love to report the doom and gloom about the economy, especially since it's an election year. "It's the economy, stupid" right? Well, wrong if your a recruiter that's worth their salt.
I lived through and cut my recruiting teeth during the real recession in 2001...9-11 and the dot com bubble burst stopped the economy dead in it's tracks...and yet, my business grew!

Why? In any economic downturn there are always companies out there that are hiring and looking for top talent. A good recruiter has to be light on their feet and adjust to the changing tides.

Right now in the state of Florida, anything to do with real estate (construction, mortgage, etc) are not doing well...and yes we road that gravy train the last couple of years...but just because they are no longer hiring doesn't mean that other industries aren't as well. Health care and hospitality companies are doing extremely well during this uncertain economic time...and there are many other industries that are doing well also.

To do well in any economy, it's our ability as recruiters to identify top tier talent and companies that value them. "The economy" is just an excuse...don't let it be yours! Get postive, get nimble, and get on the phone. :)Are you effective? If you haven’t already, I suggest you read The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. If you don’t have time to read the book, buy it on tape and listen to it on your commute. If you’ve already read it, it’s worth picking up again and revisiting.

The reason that I suggest you read this book is because its principles have had a profound effect on my life, my relationships and my career. By continually focusing on developing these habits, I have over time become a better sales person, a better manager, and a better person overall. And I will continue to focus on them because I still have a long way to go!

The following are the Seven Habits:

1. Be Proactive
2. Begin with the End in Mind
3. Put First Things First
4. Think Win/Win
5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
6. Synergize
7. Sharpen the Saw

I’d like for you to focus for a moment on Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. This is a powerful principle and one that has changed my life.

Throughout my life I have had a talent for making an argument (I probably should have been a lawyer). I can make my point and debate my point until I wear down the person and they finally give in and concede victory. I can tell you from experience that this is not the best way to win friends and influence people.

When I read “Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood” twelve years ago, a light-bulb went on over my head. I was going to get no where fast if I continued to be the jerk that is always right and never listens.

I realized that for me to be effective with anyone, I needed to understand where they were coming from. I needed to listen with the intent of understanding their point of view, empathize with them, and then thoughtfully respond. My hope is that the same light bulb will go on over your head today.

Listening is the most important form of communication. Unfortunately, very little time is devoted to learning how to truly listen. We typically do not listen with the intent to understand; we listen with the intent to reply. We want to get our point across and we want them to understand us. Not effective.

Listening to understand is crucial to effective teamwork; members of your team must feel they are understood by you. As we learn to listen deeply to others, we discover differences in ideas and perceptions. These differences make teams work most effectively.

Listening to understand is also crucial in the sales process. It is the fundamental building block of a consultative approach. To succeed in sales, you have to diagnose before you prescribe. The amateur salesperson sells their product/service, the professional (successful) salesperson sells solutions to needs and problems.

Think about your listening skills. Do you truly listen or are you just pretending to listen? Are you giving your complete attention? Are you listening to really understand? Are you asking open-ended questions or just telling them about you and your company?

Examine your listening style; how effective is it at work or at home? What can you do to improve? First step: Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

Try it with your coworker…with your boss…with your staff. Try it on your next sales presentation…your next candidate interview. Try it with your significant other…with your kids. You’ll be amazed at how effective you become. My first blog!...How to Wintag:recruitingblogs.com,2008-02-28:502551:BlogPost:676602008-02-28T05:18:28.000ZDavid Sprinklehttps://recruitingblogs.com/profile/DavidSprinkle
Hey fellow recruiters, this is my first blog! Thank you for checking it out. Ok, let's cut to the chase.
Let's talk about how to win in the recruiting profession. First and foremost people have to like you. If you're a jerk and only in this for yourself, you may win a few battles, but you are destined to lose the war.
Let's talk about how to win in the recruiting profession. First and foremost people have to like you. If you're a jerk and only in this for yourself, you may win a few battles, but you are destined to lose the war.

So, let's say that you're the nice guy and you don't want to finish last...well being nice doesn't guarantee that your prospects will like you. They have to know that you like them, because people like people that like them. The only way to show someone that you like them is to take an interest in them.

I call it being a good date. Bad dates are only interested in talking about themselves...good dates focus on the other person, asks a lot of questions, listens to the answers, empathizes with the other person.

This is a relationship business...be a good date and take an interest and you just might develop relationships that turn into business.
