Will Obamacare Affect Recruiting?

Although the employer mandate provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has effectively been delayed again, there seems to be a renewed "buzz" around the healthcare reform law, often known as Obamacare. Maybe it’s because workers are now required to carry insurance, or maybe companies are just being proactive. But for whatever reason, we are noticing an increase in the number of recruiters asking how Obamacare will affect hiring and recruiting.

Of course, that is…

Migrating your data when changing recruitment software provider

About 6 months ago, I replied to an interesting post on LinkedIn. The thread was started by a recruitment agency director who posted a question asking for suggestions in relation to a new recruitment software provider. The surprising thing was that he was looking to stop using one of the “major brands” in the industry for something else. I’m not…

Should You Recruit an Employee or an Independent Contractor?

Companies attempting to keep costs low may consider recruiting independent contractors instead of permanent employees.

While the notion may seem attractive on its face, however, anyone responsible for recruiting talent should understand the critical differences between the two before choosing which to recruit.

Conflating the two, even inadvertently, can…

4 Types of Local Laws to Watch For If You Run Your Own Back-Office

One of the toughest things about running your own contract staffing back-office is keeping up with the myriad of state and federal employment laws.

Digital Herpes: Content, Cowardice & Owning Your Voice

I’ll confess: I’m a troll.  And not because I’m so damn short.  It’s because, to cite my favored definition, a troll – in online parlance, at least – is someone who enjoys experimenting with the emotions and passions about things that seem, to any reasonable person, silly, superficial and specious.  Take sourcing, for…

Need advice on recruiting unemployed candidates for short-term temporary assignments (I am in California)

I have had a reoccurring issue with recruiting unemployed candidates for temporary positions because most candidates state that these assignments will interrupt their unemployment benefits. Obviously, they will not collect unemployment for the duration of their temporary assignment; however they should be able to resume their benefits once their temporary assignment is complete. Is there a resource, or any literature that I can refer concerned candidates to in order to assure them they will…

The Future of Recruiting is Happening Now

A few years ago I speculated about the future of recruiting. I consulted my Magic 8 Ball for clues to the future and it warned that life as we know it would evolve into one where a Recruitment Processing Outsourcing (RPO) model would become more…

That Chip Drives Me

something-to-prove640x360-640x360

You can almost recognize it when you see it, can't you? It's that look in someone's eye. The way they carry themselves. The determination that they seem to ooze. It's that person who has a chip on their shoulder...something to prove.

I grew up attending a very academically challenging private school from 6th grade to 12th grade. The school like to boast that if we could…

Make S#@! Happen

There are lots of bumpers out there plastered with the following words:

S#@! Happens

Here are three translations of what this really means:

Shift Happens

I’ve yet to meet the individual who couldn’t benefit from a shift in thinking. This could be believing you can do something that you’ve told yourself you can’t, seeing the positives in a negative situation, or finding possibilities when there appear to be none.

How do you start? It’s much…

How to Win the War for Talent

this-means-war

A step-by-step guide by Mark Tortorici.  Every few years or so, it happens.  Someone declares a “War for Talent”, battle lines are drawn, and then candidate poaching begins.  Now while some of this is a little sensationalist, it is also very true.  Any company, who wants to not only attract the best & brightest, but also the best personality & culture fit, must set themselves…

How Recruiters Can Pay It Forward

Ask a recruiter why they do what they do, and you're likely to get a wide variety of answers. Among them may be:

  • "I sort of just fell into recruitment"
  • "I'm an extrovert, this was a good fit"
  • "I didn't want to do sales"
  • "I like helping people"

The fact is, most of us got into this business because deep down we love helping people, just as much if not more than making money. Yes this is true. Fortunately, we've…

Calling Hooey on You

Hate people

Hooey. If you aren't familiar with this term, it's a nicer and friendlier way of calling "BS" on something or someone. It's when your words and your actions don't line up and your hypocrisy has been exposed. Such is the case with Recruiters. I am calling "hooey" on you today.

I have been in recruiting for around 10 years. During that time, I have interviewed and hired countless…
