Business nutrition - you are what you eat

Thinking about how people make hiring decision, specifically why people choose different methods of hiring. I wanted to link it to a decision people make every day. From here on you will have bear with me as I stretch an analogy beyond all recognition.

Essentially, I believe the decision to hire is very similar to choosing what to do when you get hungry!

As an organisation becomes hungry i.e. it needs more people or to recruit as we call it in the industry, it is broadly… Continue

Uptick in Executive Jobs Seen for 2010

As cited in The Wall Street Journal, ExecuNet’s Recruiter Confidence Index indicates recruiters are bullish on the outlook for executive-level job hunters in 2010. Mark Anderson, ExecuNet President, interprets the data:

Technology, It's here! Are you using it?

Apparently The Sony Corporation played this mind-boggling video at their

executive Conference this year. It really demonstrates how technology is advancing and how we are truly shifting to a global economy. Check it out at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL9Wu2kWwSY

I am one of those people who likes technology, but don’t understand it very well. It is a little over whelming and scary to me but a little more exciting. I… Continue

It's a Dry Power Job Market (Part I)

Is our economy recovering?

I'd like to think yes, but after viewing the most recent December Job Report, I'm not quite so sure. In the United States we had 85,000 new people file for unemployment benefits this last month. My concern for the economy and our reported… Continue

Respond to Your Applicants

That is all.

Okay, a little more. ; )

In the seasonal world, the turn of the calendar from December to January acts as the green light of a NASCAR race. Everyone truly interested in working summer jobs in great places gets on-line and starts applying. As employers, it's both a wonderful time and a stressful time as your in-box just tripled in size. I say embrace it and work the applications to the best of your…

Casting A Wide Net on the Net

I suppose this goes without saying, but when in a job search don't put all your eggs in one basket. Early in my search for an IT Staffing Recruiter position, I made the mistake of limiting my activity. I was talking and meeting with five firms, two of which were aggressively pursuing me. I let two new opportunities slip under my radar because things seemed to be going well enough that I expected to get an offer from one of the five firms.

And then the holidays came. Three of the five… Continue

January 8th Job Search Resolutions

It cannot be avoided. It is the new year and talk of resolutions will abound. However, rather than blog about new year's resolutions in December when people are speaking of future commitments or January 1st when we are still buzzing with excitement that we survived another calendar year. I waited a week out when the cloud has been lifted and the high has worn off. Since it usually only takes about a week for most people to start breaking their resolutions, I felt that… Continue

Have You Figured Out Your Value Added Proposition? Don't Know What VAP is? You should...

I have been speaking and emailing with quite a few job seekers recently about their luck on their job searches. I keep hearing over and over that they are not having a lot of luck. They are getting interviews, which tells me that they have the requisite skills to do the job and that their resumes are making a fairly decent first impression. The fact that they still do not have an offer leads me to make a few conclusions - 1) They are up against really stiff competition and time and again, the… Continue

Irritating co-workers. The definitive list.

I originally wrote these observations with the intent of making some kind of HR Top Trumps game out of them. I thought it would make a nice leave-behind gift for recruiters, but as I am no illustrator I stuck to the verbal descriptions.

Let’s face it, From the person who stinks the office out with their lunch, to the colleague who hijacks the office diary to sneakily block book dates for the coming year's vacations, to the very helpful character who leaves guidance notes…

Getting Back Into The Game

I left recruiting after the hurricane hit New Orleans. It was a good decision at the time; however, it is time to get back into the game! Since I can start from scratch, I am researching what area I want to concentrate in. Obviously I am trying to find the industries where the highest paid recruiters focus on, any suggestions? You can post or email me at bear.norris@ymail.com

Thanks,

Bear

2010 Job Growth Prediction

As a professional recruiter since 1981, I have now experienced four recessions that impacted my profession. As a result of my experience, I have developed the “Recruiter Economic Barometer”. It may not be as scientific as other economic barometers but it has proven very effective.

Typically when companies are anticipating a slow down or hiring freeze, they either assign their corporate recruiters to other duties or lay them off. The contingent recruiting industry tends to wash the third… Continue

The Changing Nature of Employment in the Great Recession

I recently saw the Great Depression film "The Grapes of Wrath," and while I had seen it before, this time I was reminded of what's going on in employment today. The movie starts off with Henry Fonda returning to his family farm after having been away for a few years, only to find his home abandoned. He soon learns that his family, as well as all of his Oklahoma neighbors, have been evicted and are leaving for the promise of jobs in California.

We then learn that the families in… Continue

Facts about Executive Search Firms and Health Care Recruiters

If you are job hunting, you should send your resume to recruiters.

Different recruiters know about different positions. They do not usually know about the same ones. This is particularly true with retained firms. By sending your resume out widely, you will be placed in many different confidential databases and be alerted of many different positions. If you send your resume to only a few, it may be that none you send to will be working with positions which are suited for you. Throw… Continue

Looking for some meaningful reviews of Jobscience.

Most of what I can find online is a very effective marketing blitz. We are strongly considering Salesforce.com and I want to understand how Jobscience stacks up with Maxhire, Bullhorn, etc. If anyone knows where I can find a real constructive critique of Jobscience as a Applicant Tracking System for contract and full time staffing, please let me know.

Changing technology in digital communication in general, and social media in particular, has tremendous implications for organizations and how they function - not just externally (with clients, customers, and other stakeholders), but internally as well. The impact of social media cannot be overestimated - even if you don't believe a digital revolution is underway, the technological advancements currently taking place will have a significant impact on how organizations function in the… Continue

Entering 2010 As a Former Employee

Over the past few weeks, I met with a number of unemployed and unplanned new consultants / freelancers. Many of these people were simply looking for a new job but they almost all came armed with business cards for their new "consulting practice," and of course their resume. After thinking about several of these meetings it made me wonder about these people and others like them, "are you a former employee who wants to be one again or are you an entrepreneur trying to make your newest venture… Continue
