Dating analogy valuable tool with client companies as well

We’ve all heard and understand how the process of dating equates nicely to the interview process. Hell, someone even wrote a book about it. As a recruiter I’ve used the dating process as an analogy for the interview and offer process with candidates for over twenty years. Mostly because it works so well to help candidates understand the emotions that they are going through and deal with them more effectively so they won’t interfere with their decision making process. However, in working with a… Continue

Where will we find professional talent be in 3-5 years?

I have just been asked by a client to consider their future strategies aroung direct resourcing. I would be very interested to hear what your opinions are on where the professional talent will be found in 3-5 years time and what you think we are going to have to start doing now, to tap into those areas.

Thanks, I look forward to reading your ideas.

IT Talent thats impossible to find.

I have been aggressively looking for a Senior Linux Administrator in Southern California for weeks now to no avail! The worst part is that the client seems to be expecting too much from a skills perspective for the money they are willing to pay. Does anyone have any non-traditional methods that I should be utilizing to find these guys?

Could anyone please offer suggestions for good Sales Pitches for Account Managers wanting to generate new business in IT?

Hi All:

Could anyone please provide any ideas for the following 2 scenarios:

1. You meet the IT Hiring Manager of a company you are prospecting to in the elevator, you have already left voicemails for him and you now have a minute or so in the elevator with this Hiring Mgr. This Hiring Mgr knows your name already from your voicemails. How would you sell your services and perhaps arrange a meeting with this Hiring Mgr.

2. You are given a referral by a consultant… Continue

China Soft Landing - End of Low-Tech Jobs?

The World Bank just issued a report that signals continued good times for 3rd party recruitment companies, with some possible relief for hiring departments, and an ongoing challenge in retention.

The World Bank never uses the expression soft landing but that is essentially what they are suggesting. This is good for 3rd party recruitment companies because the skills demand continues, but at only a slightly reduced level. The uncertain economic… Continue

Reducing Voluntary, Avoidable Turnover Through Selection

I would like to thank Dr. Zimmerman for giving me the opportunity to speak to his graduate and undergraduate classes at Texas A&M. I had a great time, and I think I actually taught them something on what it takes to be a successful recruiter.

During my time at Texas A&M, I spoke to Dr. Zimmerman and Dr. Boswell about their research papers they have published ............…

Paying the Bills, Feeding the Soul

As I scrolled through the endless emails that accumulated overnight, one title caught my eye “Career Exploration: Paying the Bills and Feeding the Soul.”

As I opened the email to learn more I thought of the candidates I’ve worked with over the years, male and female for whom this message resonates. We often connect the nourishing of the soul and spirit with women but it is very much a need common to both genders.

When this need is fulfilled it can have a positive impact on… Continue

ARE YOU A MARTYR TO YOUR JOB?

I believe anyone reading this article knows or has known about job martyrs. Maybe you are one. My definition of a martyr is one who has a calling to become self sacrificial and is willing to sacrifice themselves to a purpose that is larger than themselves and not one that is making happiness come… Continue

I learned the value of a personal network.

I have only been in recruiting for a year and a half now. My first gig after going through Internet Recruiter training at Duran HCP was at Google, where I was able to build a small network of friends. When my contract ended, I applied for every sourcing job I could find and some would get back to me, but they went no further. Instead it was through a friend I met at Google that I was able to score my next gig at Yahoo!. At Yahoo! I met many more people, and when my contract ended there, they… Continue

Are you a Great Staffing Partner?

This question affects all of us anyone looking to acquire great talent has a staffing partner. But the question is what kind of staffing partner are you to your clients?

As a recruiting professional I have run into many recruiters that do not understand the true meaning of being a great staffing partner, or they think that they have done all they can, and feel there is nothing more they can do. Let’s cover a few key areas that would be a great start to building a great staffing partnership… Continue

How To Bond Without A Camp Fire

There’s an excellent article today by Ken Forrester over at ERE titled Bond With Your Candidates that boldy asserts that “before the Internet, Recruiters successfully filled jobs without a Resume or Job Description.”

Imagine that!

All kidding aside, he’s absolutely right and this reminder - slash - piece of advice can also be extended to not only our… Continue

Recruiting the Old Fashioned Way

Okay... I admit it... Traditional networking and headhunting isn't as easy as it used to be. It's difficult to get back into the swing of "dialing for dollars". Any new tips on luring skilled IT professionals who are otherwise 'not looking'? I am still confused about how to go about blogging so any tips on that are also greatly appreciated. I am sure my colleauges would like any tips on using the Internet as a tool as well.

Happy Hunting!
