Who Owns The Talent Community?

Since the launch of Blogger in 1999, the ability to publish content on the Internet has become easier and easier. Savvy recruiting professionals have taken advantage of this dynamic shift to connect with prospective candidates to better meet their organization's recruiting needs. In many cases, these early adopters had to build a web presence on their own because senior leadership…

Posting & Applying Online – Why it isn’t working!

With a recovering market there must be a lot of “great candidates” on the market – right? I believe that due to some unfortunate circumstances there are some “great” people out there looking. So when you post your jobs on Hcareers or any other job board why aren’t they applying?

I am fond of saying that the great thing about the internet is that it makes it easy to apply for any job you like and the bad thing about the internet is that it makes it easy for you to apply for any job… Continue

The Importance of Mentors

Why is being a mentor important? More importantly, why is being mentored important.

There's been a lot of discussion this week about lists. I scratched my head and thought, "HRMargo, what matters most about this? Why is this topic important to you?"

It's important because I am who I am because of the people who've influenced my life. The people who have influenced my career…

Recruiting From a Home Office Ain't So Bad

One year later, and I've changed my mind about working from home, I really like it. I think the key was having requirements to keep me busy and a rewarding commission structure. Took quite a while to build up to a decent monthly paycheck, since I'm paid based on hours my placements work, but I guess I got lucky (by that I mean I worked really hard) and found a good person to work with.

I never thought I would consider it a "real" job, just something to do until I found…

Stop Thinking Like an HR Neanderthal

You may get reminded every day, as I am, that you are not twenty anymore. Especially now that both my guys are in their twenties. It's hard to take when things that you thought were so cool just aren't now. As a field HR is no worse than say, law, or accounting, when it comes to not keeping up, but that's like saying big hair is no less cool than spandex.

Take compensation, for example. Most small businesses have adopted religiously the concepts of salary grids, annual salary…

What has Google got against you?

Google is a search engine. Wrong. Google is a reputation management tool.

If asked anything, whether about a band, shop, company, name or place, what is the first thing you do? Google it. Even your grandma Googles it now. It officially became a verb in the Oxford English Dictionary 4 years ago. It is undeniable that information a…

Twitternomics: Organic vs. Automatic Growth

A Google search for “Quickly Growing Twitter Followers” is filled with pages of paid/unpaid strategies designed to increase your numbers. Some of these strategies rely on using computer software and programs (keyword based) to automate your account to follow users who automatically reciprocate.… Continue

There never was, nor will there ever be a qualified candidate shortage.

What is heard often from recruiters over a drink at happy hour in Anytown, USA is the lack of qualified candidates in the marketplace. Let the increasing population, demise of entire industries, the worst recession and employment landscape in our lifetime and the invent of easier and more efficient ways to source qualified candidates, some of these recruiters may find a solution by simply making a few more phone calls. Aside from those, I subscribe that we are not and have never been in a… Continue

Judging A Book By Its Cover

The old cliché says you can't judge a book by its cover and like every cliché, it has more than a kernel of truth to it. And just like every cliché, we do it anyway. We judge people by their looks, resumes by their format or lack thereof and I'm told, women even judge men by their shoes although since I'm in Southern California it's hard to tell since a lot of people don't really wear shoes.

So it's enough to say that we shouldn't judge by appearance alone. Okay, that's enough then.… Continue

The Little Things Mean A lot....

My husband has a saying that he hears often at his company, “Let’s not try to boil the ocean!” We often try, and fail, to do too much. We often try, while attempting to reach our goals, to focus on doing everything right. In reality, that is just not possible or wise. Focusing on two or three things and doing them extraordinarily well is often the best way to solve any problem.

We just had our annual super bowl party at our house. As I was listening to all my friends I heard a common…

Spring cleaning...for the career!

It is late February in Michigan and although we have received another 8 inches of snow today, I thought an article about “spring cleaning” would keep spirits up! As a coach and consultant in the recruiting industry, I have become disciplined in the art of “career spring cleaning” and I wanted to reach out and offer some advice to the executives,…

Why Recruitment Businesses Should Sponsor Their Local Twestival

First of all, what on earth is a Twestival?

A Twestival is a charity event organised by the Twitter community.

Twestival - March 2010

Twestival began back in September 2008 with one event in London to raise money for a homeless charity. I was lucky enough to be there and it was a great night. It was the first time I had met anyone I followed on Twitter in real life.

Less than six…

Candidate-quality and placement rates

If you are a recruiter in San Francisco, then the only way that you can still afford to pay $3 a gallon these days to fill up your gas tank, is if you start increasing your placement rate. That’s easier said than done, because you have a growing talent pool (the unfortunately unemployed), and a slow-recovering job market, where other recruiters are fighting to fill the same position. At a time like this some recruiters become extremely creative, which helps them stand…

Change is on it’s way … HST’s Affect on the Contract Industry?
